THE Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) has suspended Lusaka lawyer Mundia Sikatana from practising law and closed his law firm for his alleged misconduct as a legal practitioner contrary to the association’s regulations.
LAZ president confirmed in an interview the suspension of Mr Sikatana in Lusaka yesterday, saying the association had also closed the former minister’s law film.
“Mr Sikatana has been suspended from the association until the Legal Practitioners Committee (LPC) decides on the next step. His suspension has to do with his conduct as a lawyer,” Mr Lungu said.
Mr Lungu said Mr Sikatana was suspended with another lawyer only identified as Mr Imenda during the recent LPC meeting.
Efforts to get a comment from Mr Sikatana failed.

Its shameful that the legal and mouth piece of PF has been found wanting. As an administrator of late Prime Minister Daniel Lisulo’s estates, he has failed show his diligence. Lisulo left substantial assets offshore and big houses in Zambia all which the PF lawyer and campaigner has failed to judiciary serve the orphans’ interest. He has also been behind the protracted money laundering schemes with some NGOs and PF. Even over Sata’s US $27,000 abandoned at Oliver Tambo Sikatana offered to engage in some legal malpractice in falsifying what the Mbeki/ Zuma administration had already found Sata wanting on.Shame to PF.

Professional misconduct charge against a lawyer of such experience and who was once a Cabinet Minister shows what dire straits the country is in. This is not just disgracing Mr Sikatana but it is digressing the whole legal profession as a whole and the country at large. This man was a close confidant of the late President. How could he have come to misbehave so badly in the afternoon of his career? It is a shame.The legal profession in Zambia has been dragged through the mire recently with jailing of a lawyer for contempt, leaking of exam papers at ZIALE, mock journalists-cum-lawyers, dodgy sentences, lawyers disputing sentences through the media (Ndulo), bribed Chief Justice and all that. LAZ must clean up the house and instil discipline.
Mundia Sikatana moved the motion in parliament back in 2002 to have Chiluba’s immunity removed. This same man made proposals to go to Bahamas and retrieve money stolen from Zambians, but little did we know that he had serious underlying ethical issues. What can he say in his defence?

Sad for bo Mundia,may come back in the new Government.Seems all close Mwanawasa confidants are in trouble what with Political Engineer in the fold.We need to know what he did.Is he challenging RB?IS IT WHY lEVY RETIRED HIM ON ILLNESS GROUNDS?
Yes, I don’t like this type of reporting. They should have told us what he did; what the states so that anyone trying to do similar thngs knows the law and what could be done to him/her. In cicvilsed Countries, the guidelines used by the courts on different offences are all in the public domain. So when you commit a crime you roughly know what possible sentences could be. So, indeed, by not stating what he did, he has left room for malicious speculations. Could it have anything to do with the 1980 coup plot and how he turned into a state witness betraying other plotters?
I hope there is nothing political about this suspension and stoppage of firm’s operations by LAZ.

Better wait to avoid speculating. In Luyana we say; “sakanga ba mukowa site bandundeko” (when dialogue fails battles start). Suspension puts the old man on defence as he battles for his reputation. The truth will then be revealed. Sorry old man, but consolidate yourself. whether right or wrong you are only human subject to error.

Look at the source, its Times of Zambia. Unless LT and Lusaka Times are one, there is no qualified Jounalist who can publish a story without background, introduction, main body and conclusion. Sad reporting
From a personal perspective,i think that Mr Sikatana is a man of integrity and the LAZ must also have reasonable grounds for them to go to the length of tarnishing his image like this.
Bring it out in the open to avoid speculation and lets not judge Mr Sikatana before he has had a chance to speak in his defence.
Spit out the truth soon so that people can have something worthwile to talk about it. For now it is just speculation.
i remember how mr sikatana was praised by the farming community when he was agriculture minister .for reasons unclear -ill heath as stated by mwanawasa who with all fairness was more sick than mundia was retired.the only observation i can make is that if he was still a minister he would have had his law firm closed and him suspended.this is where i have problems with these institutions like LAZ and others.justice in zambia always seats on one side .look at mpombo before he could even more his furniture ,he was in court.is this why mulongoti is zee

Sikatana has always been an honorable man and risked his life for his principles. He deserves a public hearing.
