BBC world service says it is committed to seeing that the media in Zambia plays an active role in ensuring that the country holds free and fair elections by giving equal coverage to all political parties taking part in the September 20th polls.
BBC world service country director Soren Johannsen says it is for reason that his institution has partnered with MUVI TV and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in coming up with live presidential debates that will held on Monday and Tuesday next week.
Mr. Johannsen was speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka today.
And Muvi TV managing editor Costa Mwansa said on Monday the station will feature the Zambians for Empowerment and Development (ZED), Heritage party (HP), Alliance for democracy and development (ADD), the Patriotic Front (PF) and Forum Democracy and Development (FDD).
On Tuesday, parties expected to participate in the debate include National Restoration Party (NAREP) United party for National Development (UPND), UNIP, and MMD.
Mwansa has further urged the political party presidential candidates to use this opportunity to sell themselves to the electorates.
QFM
These debates should have started a long time ago and not just a week and only once before the elections day. The debates should have been an ongoing programme featuring representatives from different political parties and other interest groups. Good idea abeit too late. It won’t have an impact on the elections and will not sway the electorates.
They are irrelevant to the vast majority of Zambians who have no access to electronic media and are the determinant voters. This is not America.
The only beneficiaries will be the non-entities and small party Presidents who can never make a cabinet even if they won the Presidency! What kind of government would that be that is led by the opposition in Parliament? Be serious you NAREP, Heritage, ZED, ADD and FDD. Disband your egos and join the mainstream politics to contribute to your country.
A recent UK government report found the BBC to be “institutionally racist” especially in their coverage of African issues. So how can such an organisation, known for its racist policy, be allowed to handle Zambia’s first presidential debate? The BBC never reports anything positve about Africa – a case in point was the negative reporting on South Africa in the run up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup. In view of the London riots, the BBC has been quiet in questioning whether their own capital, London, can handle the 2012 Olympics! The BBC is not credible to conduct Zambia’s first presidential debates. Let Zambia find its own journalists or academics who can do a non-partisan job instead of relying on the racist BBC!
The aim of this is to sow seeds of discontent at the last minute. Can the parties involved boycott this wishwash program that will do no one any good. The reasons bebind this project at this juncture are very questionable regardless of whom they are trying to assist.
I concur with you 100%.
I think this is very relevant. It is a well known fact that TV/Radio is the most widely accessed media in this country. The only drawback is that Muvi is only accessible in Lusaka. It should have been done on ZNBC for wider coverage. Anyway, let us now see which party president will shun this initiative. It is almost predictable!
Live debates are good. This is a good move by BBC and Muvi TV. Infact they should have more debates so that people make informed decisions on election day. That is what the media is supposed to be doing during election time.
This move by BBC and UNDP is most welcome and shows that the international community sees the faults in the run up to the 2011 elections. 1st off live debates let the public know which leader has solid info on what is being debated. This however has come a little too late i must say, this should have been set up one week after election dates announcements, we would have had a clear picture by now of who is worthy of plot one or not. It would have allowed the political leaders to air their views (with relevant and supported facts), by now we would have separated the jokers from those who mean business!!! so its a late call but most welcome never the less.
While debates present opportunities for the public to hear aspiring candidate’s vision for the country through their manifestos, this needed planning way back in conjuction with ECZ. I totally agree that BBC is not and can never be an institution to be used in Zambian elections let alone in Africa. All major institutions in Britain have had racial issues in their existence. Take time to research undiniable evidence will be your conclution, therefore not credible. Let a Zambian presenter who did it with parliamentary debates on Muvi Tv do the job. In my view the presenter is candid, clear and well composed reminding participants issue based debate. He is a replica of lare Charles Mando. We can do it ourselves – YES WE CAN.
YOU BBC PEOPLE YOU DON T UNDERSTAND ZAMBIAN POLITICS. YOU HAVE CALLED ME HERE SO THAT YOU CAN ASK ME WHETHER I COLLAPSED IN WESTERN PROVINCE OR NOT !!!! LOOK AT ME DO I LOOK COLLAPSED????? IAM HERE NOW AND YOU CAN SEE ME WITH YOUR OWN EYES, WHEN DID I COLLAPSE???? WHAT THE PEOPLE OF ZAMBIA NEED IS A PRESIDENT LIKE, A PERSON WHO CAN COME HERE AND SHOW THE WHOLE WOLRD THAT I DID NOT COLLAPSE. IAM TELLING YOU THIS MYSELF. GO AND REPORT WHAT YOU HAVE HEARD ME SAY……………………………
hahahahahah……..Im alive??????????
Very funny. LOL
It would be more meaningful if the main contenders (the three ‘big Parties’, MMD, PF and UPND, on the basis of representation of the last parliament) debate on the same day.
This is the kind of issues where we should be having noise from the lies of Cifire, Lifwekelo and the FODEP chap. Here is where to show the electorate the pros and cons of the debate and promote your future existence. The electorate would appreciate analytical perspectives of furthering the growth of democracy in Zambia using such forums. Manje beve bayenda mu kachasu…….
Good move but a little too late.
Debate of 10 presidential candidates? Uhmmm. And there will be two separate groups, uhmmmm. And so Mr Sata will not debate RB, uhmmmm. So what is the value of the debate, if we can’t compare the ideas of Mr Sata and those of RB? Doesn’t make sense at all to me, but on the other hand would if RB debated Mr Sata you can imagine Mr Sata having a filed day trying to ridicule the President, that is all he knows. Awe ba BBC, this doesn’t make sense, come back when we have only two or three presidential candidates.
Bbc  racist sobs
RB will shun the debates. He would not have much to say live on tv in presence of other contenders. It will rain if he will debate.
How come PF’s debate is with smaller parties. The sensible thing is to parade, Mr. Sata, HH and RB on the same day, being the parties at the fore front. I just smell a rat. For everyones information, BBC see africa as retrogresive and I wouldnt support them to take centre stage. Cant ZNBC do that?
I agree with Sub-Chief Natende. RB is a dull president who can not articulate issues. Ever since he became president has he ever articulated an real issues to the satisifaction of the masses the way our three past presidents used to. It could very interesting to see him face to face with Sata and HH.
This is welcome though late. I have a feeling RB will be there, personally i would have loved to have the top three seeded together, so that viewers could see and hear for themselves. On the other hand it would have been unfair and the other set of debates with the fourth to ten best debating together would not attract any public attention. The most plausible solution is to have four debates and reshuffle them.
The elimination stage groups are fairly drawn. Monday night will be more fired up…. PA MAKAAA…. PA BWATOooooooooooo!
#16, ZNBC is a good idea, but I still have problems with Mr Sata, do you remember the fracas at Mulungushi Conference centre in front of the Republican President and other fellow presidents? Remember his behaviour at the funeral of Bishop Duffy? Guys, this is a PRESIDENTIAL debate, who would control the situation to ensure that sanity prevails? I would rather RB is kept away from that, he is above the levels of politicking and uncivilised behaviour of the likes of Mr Sata. Sorry BBC, go away, we know that your cameras will focus on the embarrassing Mr Sata and beam that to the world as characteristic of African and Zambian leaders.
What difference will the Presidential debates make when the majority of the electorates are rural dwellers who have no access to TVs and most importantly electricity. Illiteracy is on the increase, that for any debate to be meaningful, it has to be interpreted in local languages. Shame on you politicians. My advise to the electorates is never to vote for morally bankrupt leaders. Examine each candidate`s past life history and make informed decisions. Don`t buy in to their big lies. If a leader has had more than one wife, that should trigger your concerns about his character. Unless the first wife was lost through death. Most liars have cheated on their wives before and they simply don`t care.
#17, If you followed the news in the last one or two years you should have seen RB attend international debates with world leaders, academics and other people of repute. Have you ever seen Mr Sata debate intelligently, or even just debate at all, with anybody? Do you think that Mr Sata can answer probing questions on economics, international finance etc? Didn’t you watch the clip on LT recently where Mr Sata could not even answer BBC reporters intelligently? I would have thought that PF cadres would be in the forefront protecting their president from a humiliating embarrassment barely 7 days before the big day, or you haven’t thought seriously about it as usual?
sata and RB debating/////////////////// RB can jst start crying…dont play wth the king
This is good. I think the top 3 should have been given a dedicated stage
IT WILL ONLY BE ACCEPTABLE IF ZNBC WILL ALSO CARRY THE DEBATES LIVE ON MONDAY. OTHERWISE THE TUESDAY ONE WILL BE COVERED DUE TO RB ATTENDANCE.
PLS BA MUVI, WE ALSO PAY ZNBC LICENCE FEES AND ITS ONLY ZNBC WHICH HAS WIDER COVERAGE. WE WANT OUR IN COMING PRESIDENT SATA TO BE COVERED ON ZNBC TOO ON MONDAY.
OR ELSE WE SUSPECT THAT YOU HAVE BEEN OILED TO BLACK OUT MR SATA.. MULEUMFWA PLS……
This can only play to HH’s advantage if he plays his cards right as he has a chance of making inroads MMD and PF urban areas!!
Good move, as long as they are not mediating, but merely sponsoring.
Rubbish, how can there be two groups., so the second group will have the opportunity to react to what the first group debate and likwise the first group can say anything about chaps from the second group as they will not be present to defend themselves. shambles! i think if BBC/MUVI are not ready, someone should tell them to stuff it. Debates can not be organisd in that manner
Let there be a banner displayed at this debate in capital letters for all to see and adhere to with the following words ‘SPEAK NOT ABOUT ANY OTHER PARTY BUT YOURS, AND WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR COUNTRY’. My guess is Heritage Party’s Village concept (General Miyanda) will be the easiest to understand. Most western countries are built on this concept. I am typing this blog from a village in UK. But it won’t win him any votes since majority of voters have no access to media in our villages in Zambia.
MCS don’t attend this debate unless the put you with rb. Why not put the small parties together? It is a trap
Katie good uli masipa we muchende we
Is this the best contribution you can make to this debate?
Let’s try it and see what comes out of it. Next time we should see to it that it is done better.
ONE ZAMBIA ONE NATION.
The problem with some bloggers they complain too much. BBC, MUVI TV and UNDP are doing Zambians a favor using their money and time to help us see the potential presidential candidates in action. Enjoy the show it makes election time more interesting.
HH will eat Sata’s lunch in a debate. The boy will run circles around Sata’s head. VIVA HH. VIVA real Change….. VIVA progress.
If all presidential candidates teamed up to debate against HH, HH will still come out best. HH is the best candidate!
#30, I raised points for intelligent debate, and all you can think of is “masipa”. Shows that your brain is made of masipa (for those don’t know masipa, it’s the Lozi word for faeces).
debating does not make one to be a good leader hey chaps this is zambia and not europe. the choice of the tv oso by bbc ati muvi yaba who is going to watch in chavuma unless those with decorders unless znbc but as usual they think even a live debate on znbc will be manipulated
I would have loved a debate pitting the INCOMING with the OUTGOING Presidents. Can we have one say on thursday between MCS and Rubbish Bin.
Debate has nothing to do with good leadership. Why BBC and UNDP?Zambia will soon be able to give aid to Britain anyway. Why didnt they start witth na debate the London riots?
a while ago a friend of mine said LT was mmd ,but i did’nt get it right, now iam wondering how a blogger from europe comment as if he/she witnessed most of the events happening in zambia while he just depend on what we all read in print media.at least the post is well balanced.
TV debate or no debate. Viva RB and MMD. Sata is siiick. Will soon bury him at chingwere cemetry.
Can someone mention what time these Interviews will take off, i gat a busy schedule, i might miss out.
Well done BBC, UNDP and Muvi TV.
Vote wisely.
