Vendors ordered to steer clear of Cairo road in Lusaka

Share

File:Vendors sell second hand clothes in the Central Business District of Lusaka.

Lusaka province minister Colonel Gerry Chanda has issued a 7 day ultimatum to the police to ensure that Cairo road is cleared off street vending.

And Colonel Chanda has issued a 90 day ultimatum to the Lusaka City Council to ensure that all business houses in Lusaka, Chongwe and places are painted.

Colonel Chanda says government does not what to see the situation of street vending along Lumumba road and freedom way filtering into Cairo road.

He told QFM the ultimatum is with immediate effect and is non-negotiable.

Colonel Chanda says Cairo road must be left to operate freely without street vending while government is attending to the situation along Lumumba road and freedom way.

He noted that anyone found conducting business along Cairo road will be arrested and prosecuted without compromise.

And Colonel Chanda has warned that government will have no choice but to revoke trading licenses of business houses that will not adhere to the directive to paint their shops and mend and maintain their pavements.

The provincial minister notes that it is so unfortunate that business houses only want to make profits without taking care of their areas, when it is their responsibility and needs no reminder.

    • Just increase the prices for those trading in the street say you charge them K200.000 per day, at the end of the day they will all go back to the market. don’t use the police ask council police to charge each one of them that amount you will see. they will disappear from our streets not only in Lsk but all streets in Zambia.

  1. Good move! Now take that directive to all those mansions that have been built in potholed streets! They should also restore drainage that have been buried with Zamtel cables…

  2. What a coward! is there a law against vending along Cairo road? Get rid of all street venders along all roads.People are leaving well established markets to sell on the streets.Threatening taxpayers (Shop Owners) with your hot air is laughable.Get rid of venders then engage shop owners not these populist directives.

    • Iwe he is not a coward. what do you think those venders will be doing to earn money if your remove them. Most will turn to crime and robe you when you go to visit Zed so be careful what you wish for

  3. selective justice, you *****s should know that the law prohibits street vending along all streets/ roads and not only cairo road.

  4. First thing is about grammar which is on this article guys starting from spelling and no good construction of words why?Why is the Government fond of contradicting itself because last time i heard that the President said the street vendors shall be allowed to vend on streets until when the government finds a suitable place to take them, today you wake its another story!I fell for my country we need strong Leadership please.

  5. let them also mend the bloody roads as well whats the point of having a nicely painted building when you have a dusty road full of potholes in front of your building? Who says pavements are ment to be fixed by building owners?

    • It is not the shop owners responsibility to fix the dusty roads, its the city councils responsibility to ensure road infrastructure is up to par.

  6. The President may reverse this when he comes back. Nkandu Luo tried it but it seems she was over-ruled by State House.

  7. You Galu Chanda ur a suntwe no plan….mahule and vendors balakwa cha? now the road to Linda is pathetic and iwe uli ndwii!

  8. Fix our road to linda in your constituency iwe! That is a partial solution its either you allow vending or not….not awe mu cairo.

  9. The situation along both Freedom and Lumumba would have been far much better today had Sata not overturned Luo’s directive!…this is the problem with people who have no plans…CNP (Chimbwi No Plan)

  10. Street vending or selective vending??? Its a shame frends, just becoz of politics sum rules are being raped. Pliz its either u ban or allow it PERIOD. So u will prosecute them for what? NONSENSE

  11. What about here in kitwe? The situation is the same so Bwana Minister pls can u do likewise

    Let them leave town freely.

  12. THE ULTIMATUM AMOUNTS TO NOTHING. NKANDU LUO TRIED. CAN A MINISTER OVERULL THE PRESIDENT/ BANE YOU MWALEMONA ATI UTUTEKA ICHALO KWANGALA? CNP. UMULEMBWE WA CHIPUBA UPWILA MULI TUMFWE

  13. Good starting point to bring sanity to town centres! But I wonder whether the the ultimatum will still stand when MCS returns from Rio!

  14. Street vendors make our towns dirty. They have no mode of garbage collection despite them bringing a lot of garbage to streets during their trading. This is unsightly and unhygienic. Further, because they operate in places without any sanitary support structures they create environment fertile for disease breeding. Ofcourse a lot of people in Zambia have no jobs and need to survive, but this can be done safely if the traders were to operate in designated areas with sanitary facilities provided. Most of the stands in city & New Soweto markets are vacant, while people trade on the pavements all over the CBD. Col. Chanda, you have my full support to remove these vendors. The people who buy from them will follow them in the outskirts if what they sale are necessities.

  15. GOOD MOVE BWANA MINISTER BUT PLEASE ALSO REMOVE STREET VENDORS FROM FREEDOM WAY AND LUMBUMBBA ROAD LET ALONE CAIRO ROAD.THESE ROTTON VENDORS NEEDS NO MERCY BECAUSE THEY HAVE COMPLETLY SPOILT THE CAPITAL CITY AS WELL AS OTHER TOWNS AROUND THE WHOLE COUNTRY.DY COUNTRY. . WE ZAMBIANS SHOULD BE FREE TO STAY IN A CLEAN ENVIORMENT. WE DONT NEED TO LIVE IN FILTHY CONDITIONS AROUND OUR HOMES AND SHOPPING AREAS..THE IG SHOULD ORDER HER BOYS TO ROUND UP EVERY VENDOR WHO IS FOUND VENDING ON THE STREETS AND BE PUNISHED HARSHLY USING A SHAMBOK IF NECCESSARY.

  16. This is the flip before the flop. Street vendors are going nowhere especially given the fact that their jilis have been taken away from them. Ukwa has no plan on what to do with these traders so they will continue to pollute our city and defecate in shake shake cartons.

  17. I hope you will mantain your words sir. I support you, make sure that all streets are free from vendors.

  18. The whole city and all towns Mr. Minister, we need some sanity in the country. You have travelled around the world and have seen how other countries are so clean, just go to Namibia and you will regret you are a Zambian with all the dirt everywhere.

  19. Well done colonel Chanda. You are the man, keep it up! Make sure Ukwa doesn’t give reverse your orders when he gets back

  20. Can the minister update us on the situation of sex workers in Lusaka please. How many have so far been arrested and prosecuted? We don’t want ultimatums that do not materialise.

  21. Street vendors are Sata’s children. Touch them wapya. Wait… when King Cobra without brains arrives back from Brazil he will now be King Anaconda and Gerry Chanda better run and hide for harrassing King Anaconda’s street children otherwise the Anaconda will swallow him!!! It is only in Zambia where adults behave like children, flouting the law deliberately. It is trully a black thing. Go to any country dominated by white cultre and you find no lawless spoilt-brats kind of street-vending. Check black Africans with no strong white tradition and you see chaos, dirt, cholera, and sheer stupidity on the streets. It is like you build a toilet and people still continue going to s.h.i.t on plain ground behind their houses. Why can’t those street vendors go into the markets? Black skin.

  22. Get these dirty vermin off our streets. They make our cities dirty, they block access to regular tax paying shops and buildings and they’re at great risk should a vehicle veer off the streets.Whenever laws are bent to accomodate the political aims for votes by people like Sata it says that our country is a joke.Laws are to be obeyed by all including Sata.

  24. Countrymen, let us support this move – the vendors have made enough money by now. Ofcourse it is phased, next time it will be the other roads.

  25. It’s quite a good move but I would appreciate if vendors along other roads like Lumumba, Chachacha, freddom way and the like are chased upto their homes. Let them sell from their homes if they want to sell. Town centre just look like mafi chabe as if there is no government. I end here!

  26. He that will not apply new remedies to correct wrongs must expect new evils; for time is the greatest innovator to catch up with.

  27. It’s wrong for anyone of us to say ‘well done mr. minister!’ this early. Lets wait untill we see something done to cleanse our streets of rubbish. I doubt if hey will succeed, bcoz someone will claim the move will result in PF losing popularity.

  28. One way of controlling this monstrosity is to come up with legislation that will make it illegal not only to do street vending but to buy from street vendors as well.
Make it similar to the anti-corruption law, where both the giver and the receiver are culpable and prosecuted.
Yes people need to make ends meet but it has to be done in a sanitary and regulated manner.

  29. Outline rules and regulations for business operators to comply to. Building owners should have working bathrooms for both male and female, goog running water. Resturants should make sure food is well protected and covered.

  30. At one time we had managed to clear street vendors on all main streets in Lusaka business center and it looked pretty bueatiful, as if I were in one of the streets in Tronheim, Norway. We needed to maintain that while looking for alternative places to take the vendors. Unfortunately we backslid which is not well. Ba PF ps do something

  31. The other day I met a Tswana lady who told me that she likes Zambians but what she does not like is the manner in which we have embraced IFIKO! This is true. All boarder areas are an EYE SORE! It is unbelievable that we even have a Government watching all this NOSENSE! Let PF help us clean up the whole country. THE MOST URGENT WORK IS BOARDER AREAS! EVEN IF IT MEANS MOVING THE BOARDER TO SANITY AREAS LETS DO IT! I WAS VERY SHOCKED TO SEE KAZUNGULA IN THAT STATE!

  32. Why only Cairo Road? Is Cairo Road Lusaka? Can we end this Town centre mentality of the 60s. Business districts shouldn’t all be in city centres.Trading should be done in malls or centres in townships

  33. Street vending is street vending be it in Cairo Road, Lumumba &/or Cha Cha. So, Bwana Minister, first and foremost very good move and congrats for that. Now, can you also issue another directive for other roads as well

Then go for the tarvens as well. People drink as early as as 05:00 hrs. Pa  Fwaka!!!!

  34. The move is welcome, but the ultimatum will not work!! Where do you expect the vendors to go. A plan first needs to be devised to make sure the vendors have a place to, then, a realistic time frame should be set to allow all stakeholders to accept the change.

This is what we did with tujilijilis and they’re still here, prostitution, still here.

Citizens are not livestock or children that can be ordered to and fro. Treat us with respect, and we will all get along.

  35. what about old dilapidated govt.buildings and wrecked/heavy smoking govt vehicles. the government should pass laws which they should be seen to observe themselves first.Government always says lack of funding in  the same vain business houses also lack funds.

  36. Who is the boss in this country? One day Ba Sata is on record saying street vending is fine, then his local govt minister says some thing else. Does it mean now the provincial minister is senoir to Local govt minister and the president? Or it is a case the minister is making more sense compared to the senoir members? Well this nation is at a lose as to who is ruling the nation. On another issue does it mean this minister has found a tanglible thing for these vendors to do once removed from the luctive cario road? PF a lying party in power.

  37. zambia is a developing country ,now if UK, USA and more developed countries have vendors ,what about this small country of ours? first akamu job kafuleko epakulanda ilyashi lya ma vendors.
