A 28 year old second year chemical engineering student at the Copperbelt University (CBU) in Kitwe has committed suicide by hanging himself to a tree after a drinking spree.

The deceased identified as Albert Mfune of house number H334, Chamboli, Kitwe was found hanging on a tree near his home in the early morning hours of yesterday.

Police sources and relatives confirmed the incident in separate interviews in Kitwe yesterday.

The deceased’s sister-in-law, Beauty Mfune, said Mr Mfune’s body was found hanging from a tree around 05:00 hours.
Mrs Mfune said Mr Mfune went back home drunk around 20:00 hours on Thursday and threatened to beat up everyone at home, for no reason.
She also said Mr Mfune allegedly squeezed his nephew’s throat but alert neighbours rescued the boy after he shouted for help.

“Albert was always a problem whenever he took some alcohol. On Thursday, around 20:00 hours, he came back home drunk and threatened to beat us all. But with the help of our neighbours, we managed to drag him outside and this morning, we were surprised to find his body hanging on a tree just outside the house,” Mrs Mfune said.

She said her husband, a miner, was in the night shift at the time his younger brother went home drunk and started causing confusion.

Mrs Mfune said family members are surprised that Albert decided to end his life when he was almost completing his studies at CBU.

And police officers found at the scene confirmed picking up the body, which they found hanging from a tree.

  1. Foolish boy you still have parents around you and you commit suicide what for, we have lost our beloved ones some of us but i have never thought of killing myself, let him go to to hell. i have no sorry for him.

    • Boy you sound so foolish….how old are you? We never know what makes even rich people with all the money to commit suicide..sometimes try to understand a little this is death….you’re stupid..M.H.S.R.I.P.

    • Yes it is death, but it is an unnecessary death. So the OP is not unreasonable. People should not kill themselves. This is self murder, and they are liable for their actions.

Too sad for the family that have to now pick up after him.

    • yeh, gabino what he did was stupid but hommie watch how you run your mouth, you don’t know all the details what about if there was foul play,Your comments are required ut if you dont have any solution to problems than being sarcastic best you reserve yourcomments to your self and shut up

  2. @ # 2…Boy you sound so foolish….how old are you? We never know what makes even rich people with all the money to commit suicide..sometimes try to understand a little this is death….you’re stupid..M.H.S.R.I.P.

  3. First of all, the police and the person who wrote this article assumes it was suicide. Second, peoples reaction here tells me that they never stop to question. Third, why is it that Lusaka Times articles and the picture they show about the article have nothing to do with the issue in the article?

  4. He committed suicide becoz he was drugged outside, to spend a night in the cold. No need to live was his last judgement. MHSRIP

    • We managed to drag him outside and this morning, we were surprised to find his body hanging on a tree just outside the house,” …They dragged him outside he had nowhere to go,he felt no love from any family member…plus he was drunk so he had no better judgement….”U GOT IT?”

  5. @#2Gabino. Its the up-bringing I guess. Somebody dies, and rather than empathy and sympathy for the bereaved for the sad loss, forth come epithets for, and about, the death.

  6. “We managed to drag him outside and this morning, we were surprised to find his body hanging on a tree just outside the house,” …They dragged him outside he had nowhere to go,he felt no love from any family member…plus he was drunk so he had no better judgement….”U GOT IT?”

  7. @GUNDIX the problem with you,is that u think like a grade 2…you must understand that there are some pyschological problems which make people commit suicide…The problems which other people pass through you can’t come out alive,if you are not lucky…The guy had chronic depression, which was supposed to be dealt with professionally..”sit him down and ask him why do you act like this always when you are drunk?” Try to be concerned with someone’s behaviour and show them love, you can save someone’s life one day…Only God knows what happened.

  8. Life is too good to commit suicide. Whatever problems that you have someone else has even bigger problems. All you do is solve them one by one. Put God in your life and all problems will be manageable. MHSRIP.

  9. Yes I agree with those who may blame actions of neighbor & sister-in-law. They should have called Police to take him to safety, or they could have tie-him up, like my auntie used to do to my uncle, who ended up quiting drinking. But in Zambia people beat up drunken who are uncontrollable. Gilbert may have felt shame for attempting to kill his beloved nephew. Or it could be that he was freezing, you know its very cold this month in Zambia.

  10. Recently I lost a nephew from alcohol too, balimupunka by car (sorry am not good in English), which looked like a suicide mwee.

    • Of course you are good in English, what are you talking about.  Don’t lower your standard.  You may want to explore the issue further for closure.  Find out more about what happened.  Hope it brings you peace.

  11. My condolences to the family for the loss. This is a lesson to us that seek help fast when things are getting out of hand. These are clearly mental issues possibly resulting from the hard course he was studying. Am told the pass rate is low in this course & the guy wasnt passing any test. Had he researched, he wud have realised that there is an easy option like studying in School of Business. Seek help from the counsellors at the Deans office, they could surely have assisted this chap to study B.Acc etc… Chemical te yakuangasha. Guys have come out of exams not answering anything out of 10 questions. Getting D+ thoughout the year can lead pipo to such action, worse with umwangashi nama import from Chimunzi. I insist, had he gone to Sch of Business, this guy would have been alive today.

  12. There is no peace for the wicked after death. This MHSRIP that we always say is just a ceremonial formula that has no impact to the deceased. If you want your soul to rest in peace when you die you must receive the lord Jesus as your personal lord and saviour whilst you are still alive or else no peace for you friends. All what is happening is just the work of the ennemy.People are struggling for life but others are ending it on their own. When you are not at peace with God here on earth there will be no peace for you in the grave. JESUS IS LORD.

  13. Bamulamu ba Beauty, maybe hid the Nshima, especially that the deceased’s brother was not at home. Nkhani ya nsima, yalikosa pa Zed

  14. It’s hard to answer the question “what’s wrong” when nothing’s right. Its like the nikka jus said “Stop the world I wanna get off”!, He was sic en tired of things he couldnt understand, took his life in his own hands, what a f**.
They say “death is God’s way of saying you’re fired. Suicide is humans way of saying you can’t fire me, I quit”.

You have a choice. Live or die. Every breath is a choice. Every minute is a choice. To be or not to be.

Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.
Why kill yourself? Life will do it for you.

  15. @michael . How do you know? Have you died before or do you know what people who are dieing say to God in the “kast second maybe they ask for forgiveness. Tuma born again mwalishupa kuli judging thinking you are better beings when you are the evil ones. MHSRP.

  16. Stupid and foolish boy. Not even God will forgive you. God gives you life and you just throw it away. Stupid boy. We all go through problems but we never kill ourselves. I hope you burn in HELL coz God does’t take such loosers like you. Stupid, foolish boy. You should have given all the money your parents spent on you from the time you were born up to the last penny they spent on you and then kill your self. Stupid boy. Such stupid *****.

  17. @Chilly.
I am not trying to judge anyone but my point is this: We make peace with God by accepting Jesus as our lord and saviour. Our MHSRIP does not affect in any way the deceased. Each one of us must prepare his way before God whilst living in this flesh. We can continue saying MHSRIP but that has no effect on the deceased.

  18. we should blame pf for this death. the boy thought that even if he completes studies he will not find a job. so the earlier the better. RIP. others will follow you soon.

  19. You completed a number of good points there. I did a search on the subject and found mainly persons will go along with with your blog.

  20. Its disheartening that a large number of bloggers just ‘wade’ into this issue and conclude that the person in question was ‘foolish’ to commit suicide. Firstly, we don’t know it was suicide even if it appears to be the case. Secondly, people reach the stage of committing suicide after having gone through a lot of what most people do not stop and reflect on. Do we have a system that recognises trauma, depression, self-harming, cries for help e.t.c? – and ready to offer forms of therapy that may prevent people taking such drastic actions? The tendency in Zambia is always to immediately condemn those that decide it is not worth being alive. Not every suicide amounts to cowardice. There are a lot of people in serious mental distress whose genuine calls for help are ignored by society.

  21. No matter what problems one maybe having, there is someonelse with a heavier burden.Drinking will never solve problems. This guy had the priviledge of even going to UNI when others have never even stepped a foot in class. Others are battling with cancer asking for a second chance to live. Let us treasure the gift of life. If it was not suicide, may the culprits be brot to book. My heart goes to the bereaved family for their loss

  22. I don’t see the reason he it but surprisingly God will make see that what he did wasn’t good, but to those who believe he should go to hell, what give you the right to judge for all of us have sinned so if your n***** thinking that he going well thats not God said!.

  23. Iwe qhviper, imagine you by your kid a very expensive gift and then he throws it on the ground and tramples on it, would you buy him another gift? I don’t think so coz he has already shown that he doesn’t appreciate it. Why should God feel any diffrent? The bible does not speak kindly to people who sin aganist the spirit and killing yourself is sining aganist the spirit.

  24. I’m shocked to see how callous and narrow minded people on this blog are.  My sister committed suicide in 2008 after battling with depression for 9 years.  Suicide is not something you just wake up and do.  In Zambia I have witnessed first hand how poor the state of our mental health sector is, starting with number and quality of personnel and quality of facilities.  Also I’ve seen that we naturally have a tendency as Zambians to deal with mental illness in a totally wrong way.  Family members are unsympathetic, good counsellors are rare and often expensive and the community generally has a very negative attitude towards people with mental illnesses (I am mentioning mental illness so much because people may not know that depression is a mental illness too!).

  25. Very good written story. It will be helpful to everyone who utilizes it, as well as me. Keep doing what you are doing – looking forward to more posts.

  26. Most of you are just bubbling here. A postmortem should be carried out to establish the cause of death whether he hang himself, was beaten or if he died from exposure to the cold. Dont jump into conclusions.

  27. At 28years he was in second year??? Too old , was he a mature student? I think his wife was screwed by someone else
