Bishop George Lungu (R)

CHIPATA Diocese Bishop George Lungu has said the Church will not rest until justice prevails over the deportation of Lundazi Catholic Parish Priest father Viateur Banyangadora.

Speaking during a homily to cerebrate the 75th Anniversary of Chipata Diocese held at St Anne Cathedral in Chipata yesterday, Bishop Lungu reiterated that the Church would not rest until the Government revokes the deportation of its clergy for the sake of unity.

The prelate who did not want to dwell much on the deportation of Fr Banyangadora alleging that the issue was “still hot” only reminded the Catholic faithful during the celebrations that the church would not rest until justice prevailed on the matter.

“I would like to inform you that the Church will not rest until justice prevails on the deportation of Fr Banyangadora for the sake of unity. I do not want to dwell much on this issue because it is still a “hot issue”, but I can assure you that the church will not rest until justice prevail on the matter,” he said.

Last month, a combined team of security wings apprehended Fr Banyangadora, 40, a priest of Rwandanese origin from his residence in connection with the sermon he delivered in church during a homily which was allegedly seen to have been in the spirit of inciting people to rise against the Government.

The clergyman was later transferred to Lusaka for further interrogations before being deported.

Home Affairs Minister Edgar Lungu announced few days later that Fr Banyangadora, who was a holder of employment Permit No 008955, was deported to Rwanda because he was found to be a danger to the peace and good order, contrary to Section 39(2) of the immigration and Deportation Act No 18 of 2010.

Bishop Lungu said the Government violated human and constitutional rights of their priest despite him being in possession of a Rwandanse passport.

Meanwhile, Bishop Lungu has said the Catholic Church is saddened with reports that some Catholic pupils in other mission schools were being mistreated.

“The Church is disturbed with some reports that some catholic pupils in other mission schools were being mistreated by school authorities. We hear that sometimes rosaries are confiscated from these pupils by school authorities without any proper explanation,” he said.

Bishop Lungu said the other mission school authorities should tolerate other religions in their mission schools just like the Catholic tolerated non-Catholic pupils learning in Catholic schools.

  1. Ukwa is silent on the Matter as if it was NOT him who sunctioned the Deprtation with his brother in law Tresfore Mpundu.

The two are inimical to the Catholic standing and expectation. The two must GO.

  2. Catholic church also talk about SATA’s poor democratic record. Why are you quite on this very serious issue when you used to be vocal during MMD’s reign.

  3. What explanation should MCS give. He is not the deporting officer. MCS is a catholic and is passionate about it. The likes of that Rwandese priest are very dangerous. He ran away from genocide and want to start one here. atase.

  4. ba LT what approval are you talking about here. you allow matsuzyo to insults catholics and when winsult back you say “moderation.”

  5. maybe this priest is a catholic link to the genocide in Rwanda. Maybe the vatican brought him in zambia to mask the scandles.
If this is just the matter of a simmon to speak for the voiceless poor, then PF is an evil that must be fought with prayer and fasting and all other necessary means.

  6. Lt why are we being subjected to nonstarter stories, from people who are beneath me, my fiancé, arguably beneath my Gym instructor too.

Please write stories on scandals, such as men cheating, How many wives the president has had, people cheating etc, these are non-political stories, that will appear in the Scottish sun newspaper and well the News of the World (gone now)

They are stories that I learn from, because then I get to realise that my fiancé is precious unequivocally can be tempted and contribute on my experiences

    Many Thanks

  7. The Rwandanese reverend father is more badly needed in his native war torn country-Rwanda than here in Zambia. What was he doing here? We have enough priests in the country. Why can’t he preach in his country of origin? We in total support of his deportation least he incites Zambians to rise against one another. Viva govt!!!

  8. This simply means the church which backed Ukwa’s lies before elections will not rest until Ukwa is out of plot one come 2016 or even before according to God’s providence. Watch this space.

  9. @masuzyo have sum manners u can’t insult the church which belongs to God. Anyway thats not my business it is for God to deal with u.

  10. If Sata is Catholic then Masuzyo is very correct and economical with befitting adjectives for Catholicism. They are worse than described above. If Sata joined my faith for a second then I would quit pronto beCause light can not fellowship with darkness.

  11. Bishop George Lungu should understand that if a catholic pupil is attending a SDA school, wearing a rosary will be considered as idolatry and will not be allowed as that compromises the teachings of the SDA. Similarly catholic schools force all pupils in their boarding schools to attend mass. These controversies will not end by Bishop Lungu asking only other schools to allow catholics to practice their religion freely while catholics carry on. On the deportation of Father Viateur Banyangadora, the stand off is simply because the catholics have stubbornly refused to appeal chosing to push the minister to reverse the decision with the influence of the president. This is a ransom position for his HEMCS who is a staunch catholic! There is need for a stand down by one party to resolve this.

    • I think all should be tolerant to other people’s choices of religion and association or they should make it clear that non-catholics or non-advertists are not welcome in their schools. Its only the UCZ school that are tolerant to some extent than all holier than thou churches.

  12. Its not true that the catholic mission schools are so tolerant to other non-catholic pupils in their schools. I went to a catholic school myself and we were forced to attend church service at the chapel and made to bow down to their images.

  13. By the way ‘Paya Farmer (PF)’ is an inciting message and should have not been used by the priest. Preaching hatred is not for missionaries. Just because the world price for cotton collapsed and the new government was not ready to print money to buy cotton from farmers as a form of subsidy does not signify that the government intentionally intended to see farmers dead. This kind of hate preaching is totally ungodly and can be intepreted as inciting the congregants against a democratically elected government. Instead of the PF government reacting they overreacted by fishing out the priest and deporting him. What would have happened if he was a Zambian? Quick fixing by the minister resulted in human and constitution rights of the priest being infringed. Now the catholics and GRZ MUST talk!

  14. For four paragraphs at the beginning you tell us the same information namely that the church will not rest.Whats the matter with you Zambian journalists? Cant you report?

  15. Just pray for your own sins. All those children you have and yet hiding behind your cassocks. Own up and stop destructing us with this issue.

  16. Imwe ba Katolika, why have you been oblivious and silent about the rabid tribalism and nepotism being practiced by the “ruling class” in this country? You have been the voice of the voiceless, does your silence on the matter mean you condone the practice? This is ripping the nation in the middle. We should not bury our heads in the sand, but never since independence has this country been so polarised on tribal lines as now. Thank you to the PF leadership.

  17. no 25 mind your language, God will punish you for insulting people of God. Yes catholics should’t rest until justice prevails

  18. no25 talking from experience you are one of those who make men of God fall, u’ll never inherit the kingdom of God repent your sins and watch your mouth

  19. This is a dead issue. Catholics have been done a DONCHI KUBEBA by their very own Satana. They should just shut up until 2016.  That is what you get for not being wise.

  20. some catholic priests in Rwanda were involved in massacre.. they pretended to help hide the genocide victims in churches. But their main plan was to have gather as many victims in one place, that was the catholic churches.

  21. Hatred is what you had for RB. Right from the start, before adoptions and general elections, people hated that man for no apparent reason. He had done nothing wrong. So, why should other politicians complain this time that there is hatred, when people are even afraid of talk? We will talk we just wait, we will not even fear going to jail, this is our country Zambia.
