The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has expressed sadness with some parents said to be using their children and dependants to sell illicit drugs on their behalf.

DEC Public Relations Officer Samuel Silomba said the commission has arrested a 14 year old girl of Morgan Mupu village in Serenje district for trafficking in cannabis which she was selling on behalf of her father.

In a statement to ZANIS , Mr. Silomba said the juvenile who was apprehended from her residence was found with 3 by 50 kilogram bags of cannabis weighing 58.3 kilograms and was in possession of K2.1 million.

He further urged parents to protect and build the future of their children by not involving them in criminal activities.

Meanwhile, DEC has arrested Julius Mukonda, a 28 year old peasant farmer of Chimbinde village in Kaoma district for trafficking in 39 bags of loose cannabis weighing 476 kilograms.

Mr. Silomba further said the commission has also arrested and jointly charged Joyce Mumba 23 and Wedson Chola 25 both peasant farmers of Serenje district for trafficking in loose cannabis concealed in a plastic bag weighing 17.23 kilograms.

Others arrested include an 80 year old Serenje peasant farmer Chola Muyapemba and Isaac Chingumbe 24, of Banda farm in Mukushi for trafficking in 125.15 kilograms of cannabis.

Mr. Silomba said the suspects will soon appear in court.

  1. All these poor souls will b sent 2 jail without mercy. But some rich guys that have commited worse crimes such as economic sabotage are free and poping champhne.

  2. why are pipo involved in illicit activities? The answer is lucky of work and poverty. If these two are handled ,such activities would reduce.

  3. The juvenile who was apprehended from her residence was found with 3 by 50 kilogram bags of cannabis weighing 58.3 kilograms and was in possession of K2.1 million?

  4. i wonder why only the poor in our society are arrested while the rich are left? is it because the poor can not afford the lawyers or bribes?
please DEC if you are serious about combating drug abuse do not choose go to kabulonga and arrest those chaps.

  5. Come on DEC. Stop arresting people on marijuana charges! This is a soft drug that has been in use in Zambia since time immemorial. Go for those who are trafficking in cocaine and heroin! Otherwise you *****s will end up building more prisons than schools!

  6. Its is very stupid of educated people to think taht Cannabis is a dangerous drug. A lot of research has been conducted and debates held, and by now anyone with real interest should know. Marihuana was not criminalised by our governments. It was criminalised by western legislation, enforced through our colonial masters. Now the same western countries who criminalised are decriminalising it in their own countries. One reason for the criminalisation of cannabis is this: It is a medicinal plant which anyone can grow, therefore the pharmaceutical companies (the system) will not profit from it since you can grow your own. They need you to depend on what comes out of their factories. Secondly, it grows naturally only in third world countries due to climatic conditions.

  7. Since it grows naturally only in poor countries, with the amount of demand it has worldwide it would be a huge economic boost for our countries. No one wants to see that happen, because when we stop depending on them is when they lose control over our natural resources which their system is heavily dependent on. So, for DEC or any government to behave this way is simply helping the imperialists work against our people. Scientific evidence suggests that coffee, alcohol and cigarettes are by far more dangerous than cannabis, yet these remain legal. People die from allergy to peanuts. No one has ever died from smoking cannabis. Lets not follow blindly. Let’s do some reading and getting our facts in order. Chibolya is full of heroin, crack. That is the stuff you want to eliminate very fast.

  8. There is need to look at this issue of people resorting to cultivating marijuana in those areas mentioned. Surely it is poverty that is leading to this, no jobs, govt is not paying farmers their money on time, people got to find some quick alternative and these are the results. Very sad for these people who will be send to prison for such petty issues while white collar criminals are seated in their luxurious  mansions in Chalala!

    • This is correct. As long as the overall economic factors are not taken care of, such activities are to be expected. This is like punishing these poor people for the failure of the system.

  9. Has any of you people saying ‘legalise the herb’ ever smoked it before or you are just saying?Ask yourself why we have cases such as the Mailoni brothers and Ruth Mbandu. Is it not because of such drugs that people can do that?

  10. Country of dobo smokers. DEC should nab the kids parents and give this girl 50 lashes (shamboko) I bet you she:ll never do it again! Umupondo justice!!!!!

  11. There is nothing wrong with WEED, please DEC stop wasting your time on villagers and concentrate on serious cases. Mwayamba ukufukilila baka mushi muletina the BIG fish in Lusaka. What has happened to lyato’s case, Henry Kapoko, Regina Chiluba and many more cases? please let the poor people go.
