THE MMD is confident of retaining the Mufumbwe parliamentary seat in the by-election on November 8, this year.
MMD campaign manager Newton Samakai said in an interview yesterday that his team had done enough ground work and was sure that party candidate, Standford Mulusa would carry the day.
Mr Samakai complained though that MMD was not being given enough time to campaign because Republican Vice-president Guy Scott was also holding campaign rallies in the constituency to drum up support for Patriotic Front (PF) candidate, Steven Masumba.
He said the opposition party was not being protected, claiming that some MMD cadres had been beaten or threatened by PF members in the presence of the police.
But PF campaign manager Jean Kapata disputed claims by the MMD that there were cases of violence perpetrated by her supporters.
Ms Kapata said in a separate interview that the PF was more interested in discussing development than engaging in petty issues.
The MMD has since challenged North-western Commissioner of Police Eugene Sibote to visit Mufumbwe.
“We have preached to our members not to engage in violence and this is working well and as MMD we do not want any violence,” he said.
Mr Samakai said the PF would not win the election because the Government had not fulfilled promises made prior to the September 2011 tripartite elections.
“People here will never be cheated again by the PF, their memories are still fresh they still remember the promises during previous elections. Words of mouth would not change their thinking they want actual work to be done,” Mr Samakai said.
