Katongo vows to stay on for Zambia

Share

Chris Katongo insists he is still Zambia captain and will not retire from international football.

Katongo has been attacked for failing to inspire Zambia at the 2013 Africa Cup where they surrendered the trophy following a disappointing Group C exit.

“When we won the Africa Cup, I was a hero. Even when we are eliminated early from the tournament, it is my burden as captain to be pointed fingers at,” Katongo told the Zambia Daily Mail.

“I am still playing for my country. We have World Cup games coming and I still have a lot of responsibilities as a player.”

Zambia failed to muster a win at the Africa Cup on their way to an early exit to finish on three points from as many draws in their Group C games.

    • Its you guys who were advocating for Mbesuma to play in the place of Christopher Katongo. We Zambians forget easily. When Zambia won the game against Uganda on post match penalties every one on this blog was condemning HR for not using Mbesuma when ever Zambia is playing.Even on James Chamanga people complained that he should not be used and Herve Renard had to abide by the request hence the early exist.Football is a team work sport not an individual sport like tennis or boxing. We need to rely behind our team for them to qualify to the world cup 2014.Like Great Kalu said no team at AFCON 2013 is playing better than Zambia. We need players who are committed and fit to play for Mother Zambia not just names or one match players like Mbesuma.AZ technical bench should summon Given Singuluma.

  1. of course you have to soldier on. not until we qualify to the world cup. what most of your admirers are concerned about is your selfishness when in front of goal. you always seem to want to score even when your colleagues are well positioned within the nine yard.
if only you can start playing like the way adebayor of togo, gyan of ghana have played in this tournament, you surely will be our great captain. unselfish captains.
    mark my words….

  2. Chris, we still love you man! Soldier on. It was a mistake by the coach not to have brought you on as a SUPPER SUB. If he had done that I know you would have silenced your haters and doubters. I like your character and creativeness. Please start inculcating that same fighting spirit you have into the young minds every chance you get.
    Yours truely,
    Thankful Zambian.

  3. That’s a spirit of a Buffalo, get wounded and fight even harder!!!
Now help you great spirited-funny brother of yours find a club. We miss Kalaba & Felix mid-field.

  4. Zambia played well, but lacked a playmaker such as Adebayor, Traore, Gervinho or Gyan. We were shooting blanks too much. Mbesuma alone could have scored four goals in this tournament if he was not sleeping. FAZ should try to iron out these problems quickly

    • We will only have players of that caliber when we have Zambian players in the English premiership or Spanish La Liga. At the moment we only have Mayuka, who may or may not make it in the league. His physique is working against him. These days European clubs prefer athleticism to silky skills in young players. Athletes are more likely to pick up skills, whereas smaller, weaker players are not likely to compete in tough leagues. This is where Sunzu has the advantage. He is big and strong and can only get bigger and better.

  5. Zambian’s are fools just because thy did not make it does not mean it is the end of th world the boys played very well they did not loss any game and thy have been playing ever since they won people get tired thy need to rest so do not point out fingers if you can’t play football

  6. Katongo, We now know your wishes that you want to stay on. But staying on is not your prerogative alone but that of the coaches also. You have to work hard to remain in the team. It is not just the question of your wishes but hard work. So work hard my friend. In SA you were hopeless.

  7. Mr Chris, don’t lose hope. There is still chance for you, don’t listern to us we will discourage and by the end of the ‘ll be losers all the time. We do better today tomorrow it ‘ll be a different story. I egde you to work extra harder and convince the coach that can it. Thank my dear continue working hard you are a good leader who can comand the team well and as for me am happy with team and you. Thanking you

  9. We Love you Christopher & never loss nor give hope. Keep up the fighting spirit for your motherland Zambia. You are a real captain

  10. FAZ let us start preparing for the 2014 World Cup qualifying matches against Ghana now.Lets not wait until the last two weeks for to start serious training for this important match that we need at least a draw if we to win the game in march 2013. Ghana is the only hurdle we have in our way to Brazil and we can not allow them to derail our mission the way Ethiopia,Nigeria and Burkina Faso did at the ongoing AFCON 2013.We do not need to change the all team only a few inclusion in the front line and We will be home and dry.For your own information Ghana is afraid of meeting Zambia and are happy that we are not at AFCON 2013 anymore. They think if its not them then it be Cote De Ivoire to lift the 2013 AFCON trouphy.

  11. Much respect much respect, football is one complicated proffession, the sad thing is spectators never get enough and are selfish, they dont understand the game, when you give them what they want, you become one of them, when you fall short you become an enermy, even i dont understand them.
Otherwise, keep fighting for Zambia you will always go down in history as the kapitein who brought africa cup to Zambia, but some of these funs will always go down as the blogger fun who blogged 24/7! Much love.

  12. katongo! It was muvi tv with its cheap labour soccer analysts plus these other small cheap labour radio stations that mounted the pressure on HR to drop the main man of the moment, chris katongo bbc footballer of the year.
    Jealous pa zed jealous.
HR should learn to stick to his opinion next time, listening to arrogant ignorants is a costly mistake.
