Accident in Chibombo1

The Zambia Postal Services Corporation (ZAMPOST) has announced that they will meet the full funeral costs for the 54 victims of the Chibombo Post bus accident.

Anouncing this today, Zambia Postal Services Post Master General McPherson Chanda also said that his company and the bereaved families based in Ndola have tentatively agreed to hold a mass burial next week Tuesday.

And the board and management of ZAMPOST have sent a message of condolences to the families of the affected travelers. The company has set up two help lines for victims of the Chibombo accident which left more than 50 people dead.

Affected families could call ZAMPOST on:

0212-613275 or 0979-049793 or 0965-609606.

Meanwhile, Thursday’s accident on the Great North Road is the third worst in the history of the country.

According to the statistics by the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) the worst road accident was recorded at Pumula in Kabangwe where 76 people died.

Second was when 56 people died in road disaster in the 1990’s at Kanyongoloka near Luangwa when a UBZ bus overturned.

And the Christians Coalition against Poverty in Zambia Executive Director Evangelist Gregory Chileshe has called on government to carry out a thorough investigation on the fatal road traffic accident.

Evangelist Chileshe said that safety measures must be taken into account in order to avoid the increasing road accidents in the country.

And a Lusaka based clergyman Apostle Christopher Kunda has called on President Michael Sata to declare a period of national mourning in honor of those that lost their lives in the fatal accident.

Apostle Kunda has also asked Zambians to pray for the families that have lost their loved ones.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma has extended his sincere condolences to the Government and the people of Zambia following the road traffic accident involving a bus, a truck and a Land cruiser.

“South Africa joins the people of Zambia in mourning the loss of lives of more than 50 people during the unfortunate accident. Our hearts go out to the families, relatives and friends of the deceased. Our thoughts are with the injured as we wish them a speedy recovery”, says Zuma.

  1. Good of Zampost.Tuchili tulelosha…mukwai nabalale muchibote.Hope tuesday will be declared days of national mourning.

    • THIS IS PURE HUMAN SACRIFICE,ITS NOT ADVISABLE THAT FAMILIES ACCEPT THIS KIND OF OFFER.IF THE FAMILIES CAN EFFORD.DO IT WITH OUT THE HANDS OFTHE SATANIST.THIS ISMY ADVICE………..

    • WHAT ADAMSON HAS SAID IS VERY TRUE.I ASK MEMBERS OF THE BODY OF CHRIST TO HELP THE FAMILIES MAKE RIGHT DECISSIONS.THIS IS A SPIRITUAL BATTLE WE NEED WARFARE MINISTERS TO DO THEIR PART.WE DON’T NEED PERMIT FROM THE POLICE.WE WILL DO IT UNITED IN OUR CLOSE SETS.THE BATTLE IS THE LORDS…..

    • @Adamson and FTJ: have you ever thought of the possibility the the devil is angry with Zambia for not voting his people in office? God cannot be angry with Zambia because He is the one who appoints people to thrones. The God I worship is Greater than the devil. You both seem to believe there are sacrifices going on in Zambia. The ZWD also believes so and they support HH. Where is HH in all this? Has he offered condolences or he is at home rejoicing of the human blood for his occult? HH has never mentioned GOD or Jesus because he believes in another god. Maybe his god is angry at Zambians for not voting for HH. You seem to know more about these sacrifices and satanism going around. Tell us who is killing our people. We shall never bow down to the devil and his HH. God forbid in Jesus’ name

  2. Please try to identify these victims so they can be buried individually by their families.
A mass burial is somehow undignified.

Media should also refrain from showing pictures of the bodies. It must be awful for the families.

    Rest in God’s peace.

    • Mass burial is most appropriate, they became relatives by traveling together. But of course most families will demand their beloved ones.
Thank you for calling on those posting such pictures, some are even on facebook.

    • Nubian Princess:
Please note that there is a difference in context between MASS BURIAL and MASS GRAVE. In this case what they mean is that all the dead will be identified and each one will be put in a separate casket. However they will choose one location where all graves will be dug and all the caskets will be buried one after another at a MASS ceremony in the presence of all relatives. Exactly like they did for the perished national team in 1993. DOES THAT CLEAR THE AIR???

  3. Now you start bringing better news, good you are listening you media, and so called journalist.
Even ZWDogs, we told them to bark meaningful, and continue to advise those people at that State House. And where is Lungu?
light hearten president Zuma sent message, your own Sata has not been shaken. Heart of cobra!!

  4. Please work on your road infrastructure. Car technology has far outstripped the behaviors of our drivers. What we need is to i.d.i.o.t.-proof our roads so that even the most reckless will not be a danger to others. Is it so much to ask? Have overtaking lanes at brows of hills and at curves. This is one way. When funds permit (and I am sure they do), bring dual lanes in one direction… Is this too much to ask? Putting humps (that have no warnings in advance in most cases) is not a real solution.

    • Hi I strongly agree with you. These things happens everyday but the gvt do nothing about these things. Gvt should wake up and do their job not just sit in the offices doing nothing, some of them they do their own bussiness during working hours. They should upgrade hospital, roads, education etc. These guys they sent their children aboard for better education using taxpayer`s money while our kinds go to local schools, this should stopped we are all equal. Pass the message.

  5. Please, remember that insurance is important. Zampost is able to pay because in the service charges, there is an insurance contribution. Condolences.

  6. What are funeral costs…its high time the deceased relations started taking these bus companies and their owners to the cleaners – only then will their drivers take extra care when driving on our roads.

    • Did you even read about how the accident occured? Don’t be too quick to cast a blame. The Post bus driver died. He was hit in his rightful lane by a truck that lost control because of a land cruiser which overtook the bus at a curve. What was the Post bus driver supposed to do, eh? Let us mourn in peace and stop the stupid comments. The driver was human too and lost his life. It is called an ACCIDENT.

  7. THIS ROAD CARNAGE MUST BE BROUGHT TO AN END IN ZAMBIA BY SIMPLY TIGHTENING THE ROAD TRAFFIC LAWS. GETTING A DRIVING LICENSE IN ZAMBIA IS FAR TOO EASY. I HAVE SEEN MINI BUSS CONDUCTORS BEING GIVEN TO DRIVE OR LEARN DRIVING LESSONS BY DRIVERS WITH PASSENGERS ON BOARD AND THE PASSENGERS DO NOT COMPLAIN. THE NEXT DAY THIS CONDUCTOR IS A FULL LICENSED DRIVER. CORRUPTION, CORRUPTION, CORRUPTION.

  8. WHAT LESSONS HAVE WE LEARNT FROM THE CHIBOMBO POST BUS RTA DISASTER
1.WE ARE NOT A SERIOUS NATION.

2.ROAD ACCIDENTS IN MY OPINION ARE NOW KILLING MORE PEOPLE THAN HIV/AIDS.

3.WE ARE INCAPABLE OF HANDLING ANY DISASTER:HOW LONG DID IT TAKE THE POLICE ,MEDICAL PERSONNEL TO ARRIVE AT THE SCENE?

4.WE HAVE NO RESPECT FOR THE DEAD:CHECK THE PICTURES AND SEE HOW THE DEAD WERE BUNDLED BY THE SIDE OF THE ROAD.DO THE POLICE CARRY CORPSE BAGS?HOW TRAUMATIC FOR THE RELATIVES WHO IDENTIFIED THEIR RELATIVES BY THE PICTURES.

5.THERE IS A LOT OF DISUNITY IN THE COUNTRY.CAMPAIGNS FOR BYE ELECTIONS ARE GOING AHEAD IN SPITE OF THE NATIONAL DISASTER.WHERE IS THE LEADERSHIP OF THE PF?

TO THE RELATIVES OF THE DEPARTED AND INJURED-
‘LORD GRANT THEM STRENGTH DURING THIS TRYING PERIOD IN JESUS…

  9. Dont forgt the 44 pupils who died in Kawambwa in 2005. We still need to do something about road infrastructure and safety

    • NOTHING WILL BE DONE!
HAD WE DONE SOMETHING RIGHT FROM THE TIME THOSE 76 PEOPLE DIED ,THE REST OF THE ACCIDENTS COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED.
      HOW LONG ?
HOW LONG IS IT GOING TO TAKE FOR THOSE IN AUTHORITY TO WAKE UP AND DO SOMETHING?

    • I agree with you.Its high time We developed our road to international standards and ensure that Road Patrols are enforced and become full operational.I know accidents happen even in countries with good roads like South Africa its common but what is required is to have more high police patrols on our roads.During Kaunda’s time after construction of the Kitwe/Ndola dual Carriage way by Goggefar
, Kaunda embanked on the dual carriage way and there was some bush clearing and grading of the road on the western of the Lusaka/Kabwe from Independence stadium all the way upto Kabwe. But when FTJ and his government came to power all that KK was constructing or constructed was halted. We might not like Sata and his PF Government as perse, whatever meaning and good project that PF are doing using tax…

  10. Iam a road engineer and to say the least our trunk roads are in very good condition, the road signs are perfect too, the problem is :
    1. Iliiterate or incompetent drivers, how does a trained driver overtake a bus on a curve?
    2. How does a truck driver avoid head on with a landcruiser that had less lives and decide to sway his truck to a bus
    3. For the post bus driver, their was nothing the man could do, he was on the right lane, right speed just all of a sudden atruck showed up in his lane
So big problem is road users. In terms of public transport our tickets should include insuarance too, in that way public service drivers would be more careful cos loss of one life would cost the company alot money

    • Malinso,

Is it not time we started building motorways or carriage ways to link cities? With so much tracffic on our roads i can foresee a lot more accidents in the future going by the single lane roads we have.
This may not totally irradicate accidents but will certainly reduce them. i dont think Ndola_Kitwe dual carriadge way has recorded a lot of accidents since changing it from single to dual.

    • THE DUAL CARRIAGE WAY BEFORE IT WAS RECORDED USED TO RECORD A HIGH NUMBER OF FATALITIES.THE GOVT. MUST IMMEDIATELY SOURCE FUNDS TO BUILD THE A DUAL CARRIAGE ROAD ON THE NDOLA LUSAKA RD,THE KAFUE- LIVINGSTONE ROAD.

    • there are simply too many incompetent drivers on our roads.one wanders if they bother to read the zambian highway code.please RTSA sensitize the public on the code’s value twapapata..

    • Malinso, as much as I agree wih you that human error is at fault in most accidents, I would like you to ponder this. In the 1970’s it was impressive if a bus or a truck would hit 80 Km/h. Therefore, the road construction was OK. Now, vehicles cruise at 80km/h within the city and 120km/h is the avarage speed on inter-city carriage ways. With the increase in speed, the need for dual carriage ways is apparent for simple reason: Zero change of on coming traffic, Zero, chance of vehicles crossing the road, Zero change of high beam obstruction at night, the list of zero chances goes on and on. Your list of problems does not include consideration of the road type. With this attitude from you a road engineer, I fear for Zambia. Blame it on the mororists and the car manufacturers. Roads are OK in…

  11. Am inspired by ZAMPOST for this gesture to burry the departed in a dignified manner. No photos plse. We can’t take it anymore, its so painfull.

  12. Where is the owner of the truck and the landcruiser that caused the confusion and carnage? What do they have to say?

  13. Once again to the families that have lost the loved ones, I express my deepest condolences to you and also wishes the surviving victims a quick recovery.
May the love of God, the Grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you as I am mourning with you.
May the Souls of the departed ones rest in eternal peace.

  14. YOU WILL TALK AND TALK BUT NOTHING GOOD WILL EVER COME OUT OF YOUR TALK.YOU ARE ALL GOOD FOR NOTHING!!!!
YOU ENJOY TALKING OVER ONE AND THE SAME THING!!!
YOU WILL KEEP ON TALKING ABOUT THE NEED OF DUAL CARRIAGE ROADS UNTIL JESUS CHRIST COMES.
THIS IS NOT THE FIRST AND LAST ACCIDENT, MORE ARE YET TO HAPPEN IF OUR ROADS REMAIN NARROW AND ARE NOT UPGRADED TO DUAL CORE TYPE CARRIAGE.
ZAMBIANS ARE JUST A BUNCH OF LAZY NIGGAS.BUSY SPENDING BILLIONS ON USELESS THINGS LIKE BY ELECTIONS, MOBILE CLINICS, COUNCIL HERSAYS, PRESIDENTIAL HOUSES, FOOTBALL PLAYERS, STADIA, SALARY INCREMENTS FOR MPS & MINISTERS, FAILED NCC AND MANY MORE
YOU ARE ALL USED TO GET THINGS FOR FREE.
DO YOU WANT AMERICA TO BUILD DUAL ROADS FOR YOU?
    LAZY NATION!!!!!!

    • AM A ZAMBIAN AND AM NOT IN ANY WAY HURT.YOU ARE SPOT ON.UNTIL THE AUTHORITIES NEED TO WAKE UP .THESE ROAD CARNAGE WILL CONTINUE AND EVEN INCREASE.
      ARE THE AUTHORITIES LISTENING ?

  15. I WOULD STRONGLY ADVISE ZAMBIAN PUBLIC TO REFRAIN FROM USING MINI BUSES AND LONG DISTANCE BUSES OR TRUCKS UNTIL THE ZP BRINGS IN TOUGHER LAWS ON DRUNKEN AND UNLICENCED DRIVERS.ITS BETTER TO BE ALIVE THAN DEAD.THE GOVT MUST BRING IN QUICK CHANGES FOR ROAD USERS . RAILWAY NET WORK SHOULD BE UPGRADED FAST SO PEOPLE CAN TRAVEL MUCH SAFER THROUGH OUT THE ENTIRE COUNTRY.PROFFESSOR CLIVE CHIRWA MUST SPEED UP HIS PROMISES AND SAVE ZAMBIAN LIVES ON OUR ROADS.WRECKLESS DRIVERS TAKING LIVES OF INNOCENT LIVES WITH IMPUNITY. MAY GOD SAVE US FROM THESE BRUTAL SAVAGES

    • @21
Your suggestion sounds good but it is not workable with the current crop of Zambia police. They are corrupt to the bone and have been so for decades. They solicit for bribes from erring unlicensed drivers, drivers with defective and stolen vehicles and this is part of the reasons why the carnage on Zambian roads will continue to soar.
I think the legislation is there but the enforcers are not up to the job.

  16. Mass burial for ONLY 54 pipo , I think its not justified also considering that very few who died are non bembas, it means many would like to bury them in bemba land, in new province, as you might be aware many could have been imigrant workers in COpperbelt .MTSRIP

  17. i have no words to describe what i saw on internet pics and television yesterday… as much as the company compesates… the horror still remains with us travellers and how likely it is that when we board buses we wil reach our destination saflely.this calls for stringent measures when service providers higher drivers as the government also does its part on the roads…

  18. judgement day, hiv/aids, it should not even be your opinion, is no.3 cause of death in africa after malaria and rtas.

  19. For 48 years we have no proper roads and some fools on this block think this will change. Do not be foolish. Look at the deaths of Zambians per from all areas of life. There are many. The fact is that Zambia is a Kingdom, so that who ever takes over will steal. Zambia will never improve and not for now but when all the old *****s die and the young generation takes over we are as goog as dead. Presidents, Judges etc over 70 years while Civil Sevants can retire at 60 and 65 for women and men respectively. The truth is ZAMBIA AS A COUNTRY WILL GO ANY ANIWEYA, WE JUST HAVE TOO MANY BIG MOUTHS CHAPWA

  20. In zambia, a clerk gets a loan from the Bank,he orders an ALTEEZA from Japan.
When the vehicle arrives at Dar Es Salaam,he organises a driving licence from RTSA which comes out in a matter of hours by bribing some corrupt guy at the licencing Authority.
Then the chap drives all over town like a stuntsman, visits all the bars in the city until the wee hours and drives home in a drunken stupor.
The following day the assh*le brags about how he was hitting the road at 200km/hr.

  21. ADAMSON MUSHALA IS RIGHT, THIS MUST BE HUMAN SACRIFICE BY THE FREE MASONIST HH TO INSTIL FEAR IN THE NATION SINCE HE KNOWS HE HAS NO STRATEGY TO CONVINCE THE ELECTORATE.

    • IT IS THE SATANIST AT PLOT ONE WHO CAME TO POWER THROUGHT HIS SONS BLOOD.HE SACRIFICED HIS OWN SON.AND HE NEEDS MORE BLOOD TO CONTINUE TO STAY IN POWER.AM NOT A SURPORTER OF HH,BUT AM SURE HE CAN T DO THIS EVIL.MY PRESIDENT NEVERS IS SOO GODLY IT IS FAR FROM HIS CHRISTIAN BELIEF.IT REMAINS ONLY THE SATANIT CALLED SATA.THE ONLY PRESIDENT WHO MOVES WITH SANGOMAS ON INTERNATIONAL AND NATINAL TRIPS.

    • Adamson: Sata is a professed christian – Catholic. Nerver Mumba is a professed christian – Evangelical. How about HH? He wants to lead a christain nation. Which church does he go to? Have you ever heard him mention God? Or Jesus? Have you ever heard him say anything about deaths and tragidies in Zambia? 54 people died, where is HH and his “wise” statements? Have you heard from UPND? Mumba has also started. He seems to worship HH. When HH is in prison or cells Mumba cannot stay put. When Mumba is in cells HH does not care? Who is acting as a satanist? We all know HH is an occultist. To whom does he worship. Zambia needs prayers for we fight against powers and principalities. he devil shall not prosper in his schemes. The devil is bitter and you can see it from the face of his agents.

  22. tax payers’s money should be continued and maintained. We have wasted alot of money by discontinuing good projects that past government were working on just because the incoming government did not like the previous one. This has contributed to the country being under developed in terms of infrastructures.Image if KK and his team had done away with the infrastructures that Welensky and his team were or had built, what would have come of Zambia? Its high time we told our political leaders that whatever was spent on some projects using our money should be sustained because its our money that is being used.

  23. A very sad state of affairs. My thoughts go out to the families of all deceased and injured in this accident. But yet again, the persistent issues regarding the safety of our roads emerge. This latest fatal accident in a series of many over the years, reveals the lacunae of road safety enforcement by those charged with the responsibility. What needs to be done, but has not been done up-to-date, has been listed by a number of bloggers above. Do we have the will, the acumen, the desire, energy and care to change things? Or are our priorities embroiled in political pursuit of violence fuelled by primal instincts of greed and self enrichment? Stats show that for a small population such as ours, we still have 25 deaths per 100,000 each year. Cost of impact should surely open govt’s eyes?

  24. Its sad to lose lives in this manner. I also remember the Kawambwa school boys who died in a similar manner close to 8yrs ago now al bcoz we keep talking and not action. I remember HE Sata capitalising on that accident and promising us better roads.

  25. Am told a lot of bembas are skeeming fake names such as rosemary chikwanda who was never on the bus at all but just because the ZAMPOST intendends to compassate the victims people are puting forward fake names especially that only 30 bodies were fully identified

  26. Mwe bantu twapapata, in this accident the causer was the old muzungu man and I think he needs to be crashed to death whilst he looks on. How could he honestly overtake a bus on a curve?? Are there no road rules where he comes from. I THINK HE DESERVES TO BURNT TO DEATH USING ICITAELA. He has trebled the number of widows, widowers, worse still ORPHANS. I HAVE LOST ONE YOUNG LOVELY LADY CHEERFUL, RESPECTFUL, AND WITHOUT PRIDE, IN SPITE OF HER RICHES.

MAY THE SOULS OF THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED REST IN ETERNAL PEACE. TILL WE MEET

  27. MAY THE SOULS OF THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED THROUGH THE MERCY OF GOD REST IN ETERNAL PEACE.

WHAT A TRAGEDY. LIFE WILL NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN FOR THOSE OF US WHO HAVE LOST OUR LOVED ONES IN THIS ACCIDENT. I PRAY TO GOD TO STRENGTHEN ALL THE BEREAVED FAMILIES.

  28. YOU GOOD FOR NOTHING ZAMBIANS!!!
    ITS ALWAYS BLAH!! BLAH!! BLAH!!!
ALWAYS TALKING AND NO ACTION IS DONE
    YOU GOOD FOR NOTHING CITIZENS!!!!

    • I agree and we should expose HH for what he is. Mazoka was but subtle. Then they decided to chose the leader of the occult to head UPND. No one else can now succeed him. I declare deliverance from the devil upon all Zambians of good faith. Let us reject the devil and come to the mervelous light.

  29. Mama and your friends don’t bring tribalism and your hatred for HH in this.
HH is an ADVENTIST. I m former catholic and I can tell you that we did a lot of of rituals and idol worshipping by kissing a wooden carving of Jesus on the cross.I m now pentecost.
1.You claim that HH does not mention the name of Jesus! Are you always with HH for you to say that? The bible is clear, ‘Not all who say Lord Lord……kulibonesha taa!
    2. How many wives has HH got? How many women outside wedlock? If you have ears and eyes ….
3.Who recently went secretly to Britain and india for treatment? You kept quite because you knew the truth! A few days after you know who arrived we had the tragic accident!
4.We never saw our leadership treating this accident as an emergency instead they were busy…

  30. I would like to convey my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and the nation at large for this great loss. RIP

  31. Keep up the superb work , I read few posts on this website and I believe that your web blog is rattling interesting and contains bands of superb info .
