Chief Madzimawe of the Ngoni people of Chipata says last Saturday’s Nc’wala traditional ceremony of the Ngoni people in Eastern province was well organized.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Chipata today, Chief Madzimawe said this year’s Nc’wala traditional ceremony was well organized by the various stakeholders who showed commitment to see the hosting of the ceremony improve.

He also stated that this year’s ceremony which was held in honour of Paramount Chief Mbelwa of the Ngoni people of Malawi who died two weeks ago, was special to the Ngoni people as they were remembering their great leader.

Paramount Chief Mbelwa is said to be one of the sons of Zwangendaba who is the ancestor of Paramount Chief Mpezeni of the Ngoni people of Eastern province.

Chief Madzimawe noted that the discovery of the Ngoni people’s ancestor Zwangendaba’s remains in Chieftainess Nawayitwika’s chiefdom in Muchinga Province also made a difference to the Nc’wala traditional ceremony this year.

He however stated that the Ngoni Royal Establishment would meet various stakeholders to discuss what should be done about the exhuming of the remains of Zwangendaba to Chipata district in Eastern Province.

Chief Madzimawe said the issue of exhuming the remains of the founder leader of the Ngoni people was a sensitive issue because it could lead to a change in the history taught in schools.

“The matter needs to be treated with caution because it will lead to a change in the history syllabus,” he said.

The chief said the Ngoni Royal Establishment will ensure that they engage in consultations before they decide on the way forward over the issue.

Meanwhile, Eastern Division Police Commissioner said last Saturday’s Nc’wala was incident free and only one minor road traffic accident was recorded.

Mrs Chipalila said a man of middle age was slightly hit by an oncoming vehicle as he was jumping off a truck on the Great East road.

She said that the victim sustained minor bruises and was taken to Chipata General Hospital for treatment.

  1. Forget about ZWANGENDABA remanis, Who is interested in history nowadays, we learn about Technology , 3G networks etc can we eat history? we need to learn how to mine and process copper, how to use modern instruments in music, how to Love a fellow man/woman or gay rights ,how to preserve food crops, how to play oral sex, all these things affect young pipo nowadays not hey zwangendaba walked from pretoria to muchinga and died their , please lets be serious sometimes

    • Malinso, if you smoke too much its not the problem of us Ngonis. Something make you drunk these day, probably wrong stuff not our mountain cabbage. Kuuzwela wena mutakati

    • If you don’t know your father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and you don’t want to know, please go blog elsewhere. We consider our history to be very important for us. It doesn’t stop us from owning smartphones, I-pads, etc

  2. Am surprised with the ignorance of this eastern chief. He must be thinking that Chipata is the capital city of Zambia and think the remains of Zwangendaba to be exhumed and be taken to Chipata ???? For what reason and purpose? Who tells him that Zwangendaba came from Chipata? But this chief is dull. Suppose the south africans also claim the remains, what is he going to say? The discovery of the remains of Zwangendaaba in Muchinga should make the historians to kick in and write the true history about some of these tribes in the east. This is good news and i recommend that a site be erected in Muchinga to preserve the remains of Zwangendaba. This will make more sense than repatriating the remains to Chipata.

    • @ 6, I agree with your argument. The Ndebeles in Zimbabwe and the Zulus in SA may also claim the right to his remains. As you have rightly suggested, let the department charged with the responsibility to preserve historical sites erect a permament structure there in recognition of him. Preserve this history in it’s natural place.

  3. As a Malawian Ngoni tribe, I wish to express gratitude to Paramount Chief Mpezeni the 4th for gracing the occation during the burial of his beloved brother Late Paramount Chief M’mbelwa the 4th at his headqaurters Edingeni, Mzimba Malawi. I was greatly touched by the speach made by spokes person Hon. Zulu. Chewa Paramount Chief Gawaundi from Kattete was also in attendance. I vividly remember Hon. Zulu saying a week before M,mbelwa died, he called at Mpezeni at his Royal Compound where the two heard discussions on how the remains of Zwangendawa would be exhumed. May his Soul Rest In Peace

    • Is this the young chief who went to TBJoshua saying that he had lost his warrior’s head gear and had only found it after TB Joshua prayed so it could be recovered? He was very young indeed. MYSRIIP.
