A Patrotic Front (PF) official has been hacked to death in Livingstone.The incident occured yesterday and Southern Province police commissioner Charity Katanga has confirmed the death.Mrs Katanga said Mazabuka Member of Parliament Garry Nkombo and his counterpart for Kalomo Request Muntanga are among the suspects arrested and detained by the police in connection with the death of the PF official.She said the police are also looking for UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema for questioning.

Fresh violence is said to have broken out Monday evening in Livingstone between UPND and PF cadres in resulting in the death of a suspected PF cadre from Lusaka.

It is alleged that drunk PF cadres drove to the UPND camp in Mosi-o-Tunya area and started throwing stones and other weapons at the UPND campaign center at the time the UPND team were having their meals resulting in the confrontation.

This is contained in a press statement made available to the media by Chief Information, Education and Training,Human Rights Commissioner Samuel Kasankha.

The Commission, which had a physical presence in both constituencies during the latter part of the campaigns, noted with regret that clashes between and attacks on members of opposing political parties continued to be reported throughout the campaigns.

The Commission said it is most unfortunate, and indeed a negation of the democratic tenets which the multiparty system we have adopted stands for, that political parties, or some of their members, should believe in the use of coercion, force or instilling fear, as a way of gaining political advantage, particularly with regard to putting favored candidates into elective political office.

It is a tragedy[/pullquote] In this respect, we wish to condemn in the strongest terms the clashes between PF and UPND cadres which led to the death of one PF cadre on the night of Monday February 25. This being the second straight by election in which a life has been lost in similar circumstances, must give all of us extra resolve to bring to an end all violence during campaigns. Political parties and other stakeholders must make it a priority to sensitize their members on the dangers of violence because, if not contained, it can escalate and create protracted violent conflict.

As Police investigate the killing of the PF cadre, we urge them to be firm but fair and professional so that they do not end up making arbitrary arrests and in the process victimizing innocent people. The Commission is closely monitoring the situation and will update the public on any worthwhile developments.

Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ) secretary general Suzanne Matale regretted that violence had become part of every election campaign and blamed the vice on politicians for failing to control it.

“The political leaders should blame themselves if the country goes up in flames because the political violence is not new. The police,cadres and political leaders have no intention to stop the violence despite having power. It is a tragedy!” she said.

    • Ed, well said…What we need is for the government in power (PF) to take responsibility and stop this nuisance. As the old saying goes…”Charity begins at home”. First, the government needs to stop their PF cadres from tormenting the other people. Then deal with the rest — UPND, UNIP etc. Else we in Zambia shall soon end up having the case of Rwanda!!! Those police officers should not take sides and support the govt., they should do their job with no bias!!!

  3. There were no such reports during the MMD era.PF cadres are so violent and what are Lusaka cadres doing in Livingstone?I hope this is not a situation were 90% of voters don’t even live in Livingstone.

All these three major party have proven their violence. MMD has violent cadres, PF has violent cadres, and so does UPND. We want peace and prosperity, not defensive partisan bullsh.it. I have been a stainch PF supporter, but I can not ignore the facts that my party has violent cadres. The only parties so far that seem not to be engaged in any violence are NAREP, ULP, UNIP (which used to be violent long ago..) etc.. In short, the three main parties now, all of them, PF, MMD, and UPND, should behave themselves. All of them.

    • That is were you maybe wrong.According to the rules you can register in Lusaka to vote at a polling station in Livingstone.There is therefore a likelihood that some pipo may have registered in Lusaka with the anticipation of voting in Livingstone.And for all we know since PF appears to be more interested in politicking than providing leadership it is possible that they have used this loophole and have prepared something special come Thursday.

    • Any death is regretable, but what did these PF cadres have in mind when they went to the UPND site? I believe they didnt go there to watch movies or for a cuddle. The PF cadres had a sinister motive and unfortunately, UPND were defending themselves. Unfortunately, this is a murky case as it will be difficult to prove who inflicted the deadly blow and hence trying to charge the detainees with joint enterprise or whether the self defense meted out was proportional. Were it not for that, in mitigation these men were looking for trouble, they got trouble.

Clearly issues of ethnicity are at play here and who ever wins, does so at great expense. Can we accord this type of democracy?   37. Since coming to power Mr. Sata should have been calling for peaceful elections and national unity above all. This means showing a willingness to condemn his own cadres when they resort to violence as well as his opponents. Ever since the funeral of George Kunda and more recently when PF attempted to disrupt the rally in Kabwata, however, he has been silent thereby giving PF cadres the green light to cause the type of trouble we see now.   48. UPND be very careful of the traps being set before you, retaliation in the name of self defense is not the solution they will implicate you with a tag of violence. No one will know the difference between who is violent between PF and UPND. An example is Uhuru and Ruto of Kenya facing trial at the Hague .Uhuru is accused of retaliation. It seems you are being provoked by strategy and they may use this as one of the defenses for the commonwealth.

  49. Excellent act of self-defense on the part of the UPND party. Those PF hooligans should have been given a much harsher treatment than a single incident which resulted in a death of an idiot.
    All elements which support unprovoked aggression were present during the PF attack on the UPND leadership and, rank and file on the day in question. For instance, PF hooligans were armed with stones, knobbekerries and other assortments of homemade weapons.
    PF hooligans drove to UPND’s quarters to launch deadly attacks using missles not to greet their counterparts. It is clear that they (PF) planned/premeditated the whole attack and the blame should be laid on Sata and his foot soldiers. It is a pure act of self-defense. Those arrests are just a normal protocal and no court will tolerate PF’s lunacy.

The state in this particular instance has no credible case and its evidence will be patched which gives the defense team nails to puncture the state case.
      As of this stage and further in the future, available/or would state witnesses (PF thugs) have special interests in the impending case because they had the same motive. This means that they enjoy no independence in this case. This is bad for PF

  50. We have very intelligent people in Zambia, the problem is hunger. This scourge will finish our country. A stupid rule or law of allowing people to vote anywhere in the country is only meant to be a selfish one so that those who control the state machinery can ferry their thugs to those areas. Our neighbour, South Africa, a notable democracy such things do not exist. You register where you live and if you are transferred you go and ask the electoral commission to change your voting area. For example if you live in Kabwata and there are two polling stations in that area, you cannot vote at any polling station in Kabwata it has to be the one you registered to vote in. Those bent to lie or cheat will always see nothing wrong with the confusion of voting any where.

You mean UPND had no better way to handle a PF cadre who was misbehavingm but to kill. What a party! Despite UPND and MMD reporting abuse of power by PF Government to commonwealth, UPND and MMD have continued abuse of power as political parties. What can MMD say about Major Kachingwe? Major Kachingwe was abused but MMD cadres in the presence of top MMD leaders. Power lions want to rule by any means. Accept that PF was elected.
