A 28 year old man of Chikoyi village in Chief Chipalo’s area in Luwingu district in the Northern province has been arrested for murdering his wife after a dispute over Nshima.
Northern Province Police Commissioner Mary Chikwanda confirmed the development to ZANIS today that Bright Bwalya was arrested and charged with murder contrary to section 200 chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia.
“Yes Police have arrested a male Bright Bwalya 28 of Chikoyi village in Chief Chipalo area for murdering his wife, female Eli Chibale 38 over Nshima dispute,” she said.
It is alleged that Bwalya on Sunday 10th March 2013 around 20:00 hours, picked a quarrel with his wife, Eli Chibale 38 over Nshima she did not reserve for him after coming from the drinking spree in the same village.
Ms. Chikwanda said Bwalya before leaving his home did not leave money for relish despite pleas from his wife to do so.
Bwalya instead came back home drunk and demanded for Nshima but his wife told him that she did not cook because there was no relish.
All this was happening in the presence of their son who is nine years old.
Ms. Chikwanda said after a long heated debate a fight erupted and Bwalya beat up his wife to death.
The Northern Province Police Commissioner explained that both Bwalya and his son went to bed without knowing that the victim was died.
On Monday morning Bwalya left home for his usual business but the boy went to the sitting room and noticed that her mother whose blood oozed through the noise was not responding and decided to report the matter to the neighbours.
Ms. Chikwanda said the child in the company of neighbours reported the ordeal to the police.
She said after police visited the scene discovered that Chibale had several bruises on the neck, and on the left side of the face.
And Police Officer in Charge Assistant Superintendent Mwelwa Sampa said the man will appear before Luwingu magistrate for mention.
Mr. Sampa said the body of Chibale is lying at the district hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem.
And Luwingu District Commissioner Mambwe Katontoka said men should learn to sit down and dialogue when there is any misunderstanding adding that this was the only way gender based violence can be contained.
Ms. Katontoka warned men in Luwingu district who look at women as sex objects or kitchen servants to desist and see them as partners in development.
