Low condom use in Zambia means over 800, 000 condoms will soon be disposed of by Medical Stores Ltd.

Medical Stores Ltd Executive Director Anne Zulu told Journalists during a tour of the facility that the firm is stuck with over 800,000 packs of male and female condoms which are about to expire.

“There appears to be very low demand, these condoms have been here for a long time now and they are about to expire. We are about to dispose them off. We are just awaiting authorization from relevant bodies to dispose them off,” Mrs Zulu said.

She said it is regrettable that there is a huge demand for Anti-Retroviral Drugs and less demand for condoms.

“What this means is that there are more people having illicit sex out there and rushing to get ARVs bit they are not thinking for a moment about using condoms,” she said.

“As Medical Stores, it is our hope that people would be more open to the idea of using condoms which is a readily available as preventative measure than depending on ARV.”

  1. Great development. Why force and promote sex? With the current PF conditions, less money to pay amahule, at home you have less food so no energy to , the type of PF alcohol of spirits, you can’t manage even a round.
If you are doubting me analysis, tell me which PF funeral you ever attended? Why? They are not getting sick, and that’s a wonderful thing.

  2. Have you taken into account that they could be sourcing from somewhere else, the condoms may be expensive for them or that they are simply abtaining. Find out the reason why before rushing to the media.

    • I quote
“What this means is that there are more people having illicit sex out there and rushing to get ARVs but they are not thinking for a moment about using condoms,” she said.”

@Cindy I think that answers you about MSL’s concern.
More people are being infected instead of being protected.

And secondly, are you sure people out there are abstaining or its just you and you think everyone is?

  3. You did no take these condoms closer to the people. You just kept the at your medical stores and expected every Zambian to come for them there in your shelves?

  4. “What this means is that there are more people having illicit sex out there and rushing to get ARVs bit they are not thinking for a moment about using condoms,” she said.

    She sounds irrational

  5. Sex is sweet says mark. It is even sweeter if you use a condom. The problem is that sex has been brought out in very bad light like sex is equals to AIDS and death. Sex is a better alternative to the gym. Only if we approached sex from a positive side and encourage people to engage in responsive sex.

  6. Its a shame to destroy of those condoms, when our services have been crying for more condoms . we always been informed there are shortages of condoms. Medical stores must engage organisations which has very good record keeping and tracking on condom distribution.
I know there are many other organisations which needs them a lot. Most of the Districts do not receive enough supply. I can tell you a serious program will distribute about 30,000 condoms per week through the condoms outlets, and activists who are helping the people in the communities on HIV/AIDS and STI prevention methods. There are many treatment supporters and volunteers trained on how to demonstrate and distribute condoms to the sexually active age groups.
MOH must work out in the Districts to find out how many condoms each

    • These guys have to wake up and engage the private sector in this, how is it that a crate of Coca cola and Fanta are easily distributed to inaccessible rural areas….talk to them and see what you can do together…I’m sure they will be happy to help.

  7. MOH must work with the Districts to know the number of Condoms each Organisations needs per month and make a thorough plan for 2 Quarters supply to each Provincial Headquarters.
the PACA, DACA and DAFT must then organise how the Organisations will get the condoms and do the reporting.
The major problem to be solved is Transportation and consistency supply.
please let us discuss on this issue so that we do not waste so much money next time.

  8. She sits her ass on the condoms and expect people to have access to them……..they is a very high demand for condoms in Zambia but the distribution is very poor…….Madam zulu or whatever they call u…plz take the commodity to the people and not the other-way round of people following the commodity

  9. She is another empty suit waiting for her paycheck at the end of the month if she was running a green grocer all her veg would be going to waste…its a shame that we have such slow-witted individuals in such high positions who lack creativity…. Anne Zulu you are the most stupidest director I have ever come across.

  10. Let us help each other. to solve this. if the story here is true about these condoms to go to waste it is not pleasing at all. So our doors are open on how we shall help this.
    regards.

  11. Their is no relationship between her condoms going to waste. it is a systematic was of trying to remove subsidies.

  12. sex is sweet, hot and taste without a condom.

The only condom I use is ‘making love’ to my ‘one’ and only beautiful girlfriend. I don’t trust any other girls and I don’t trust condoms either. I have the impression that may be HIV could be inside those condoms because I don’t trust manufacturers abroad.

  13. The director needs to be fired. How many people have gotten infected for failure of distribution? How could keep 800,000 condoms in storage until they expire and blame people for not thinking about safe safe. Did you do the sensitization to let people know condoms are available? And how do you assume that the ones getting ARVs are not using condoms? foolish management. Then your minister doesn’t want to give condoms to prisoners. Ubukopo…(empty heads). Just talking, no proper action.

  14. The director needs to be fired. How many people have gotten infected for failure of distribution? How could you keep 800,000 condoms in storage until they expire, and then blame people for not thinking about safe doing. Did you do the sensitization to let people know condoms are available? even free of charge once you realized the expiration date is drawing near. (Too to late to give them out now – just destroy them)

And how do you assume that all the ones getting ARVs are not using condoms? foolish management. Then your minister doesn’t want to give condoms to prisoners. Ubukopo…(empty heads). Just talking, no proper action.

  16. Hey, does anyone know if the ARV shortage is over? The news media has seemingly forgotten about this serious issue. I wish someone (LT journalists, I mean you) would do some undercover reporting from Lusaka clinics, or interview patients, to find out if there are ARVs in stock, and if they are being given to patients. I’ve heard that some clinics still don’t have them, and that the price in pharmacies may have increased. Can anyone who is in Lusaka and knows people on ART confirm this? I’m wondering if some clinic workers are saving the drugs for their friends and families, and are not handing out the supplies they have until there’s more.

  17. She must be the first to take a packet to her home. MStores has many employees, why cant they share? Hypocrites, they judge others for the same things they do.

  18. usually, extra-marital sex takes place at lodges, therefore, distribute condoms to lodges as soon as you receive them. why keep them in the stores under lock and key. misuse of our tax.
