New Patriotic Front Lusaka District chairman Robert Chikwelete has said that it was unfortunate that Vice-President Scott described him during Parliament session last week as ‘a self-appointed chairman’.
He said that Dr Scott was not being truthful in the manner he was informing the nation about his appointment.
The Vice-President told Parliament last week that Chikwelete was a self- appointed district chairman and the party did not recognise him.
When contacted for an interview, Chikwelete said that, “My brother, you know it well, it is just unfortunate that he took it to Parliament and made that statement which was full of empty words. There was no single truth in what Dr Scott told Parliament. It was just politics at play.”

He said that it was unfortunate that Dr Scott had exposed himself to be working against President Sata by joining the enemies of the party who thrived on peddling lies, tribalism and other vices in the ruling party.
Chikwelete reminded Dr Scott that he was enjoying the position of Vice-President because he was just appointed by President Sata just like he was also appointed by the head of state as district chairman.
He questioned Dr Scott’s scathing attacks on him over the Presidential appointment which all senior party officials enjoy.
“We are all appointed by President Sata, Dr Scott himself was appointed by the head of state. He was there when I was being appointed and I am surprised that he went to Parliament and lied to the house that I am self imposed or appointed chairman when it is His Excellency who appointed me.
I respect Dr. Scott as our Vice President but that statement he gave in parliament was empty and had no truth in it. God is great and he has exposed him. God exposes people with hidden agendas like those working against President Sata and Dr Scott has dragged himself into that problem,” said Chikwelete.

He said that it was unfortunate that the number of people working against President Sata was growing, adding that as district chairman he had touched on a matter that exposed Dr Scott.
Dr Scott told Parliament on Friday morning during the Vice President’s Question Time that Mr. Chikwelete was self-appointed.

Dr Scott said the PF will not allow lawlessness perpetuated by political party cadres to become the order of the day.
“Cadres, PF, MMD or the UPND or indeed real, genuine, fake or self-appointed cadres will not be allowed to break down law and order in this country. Zambia has laws and everybody has to follow them,” Dr Scott.

The district party chairman are elected not appointed. If he is very active now and impressing Michael and others, the influence if positive must be demonstrated in an elections at branch level. This is where cadres get it all wrong. This Chikwelete chap is just a district chairman for one of over 30 political parties in Zambia. So what if he is elected or nominated by his party leader and not subjected to an election. Of course democratic elections are dreaded in most of our political parties – for fear that members may also start demanding that their presidents should be subjected to competitive elections. This is why opposition is always threatened with court cases or beatings whenever they express their views on the character or style of party presidents who happen to be Heads of State of our countries – including ZED. Though it’s true the man needed an election, but because of the office and authority the president occupies, I think it was wrong for the VIP to openly show that the boss had errord, infact it is his duty Scot to defend, protect and professionally advise the boss. The word of the president is “appointment letter itself”. If Scot is loyal and had genuiningly observed some error, all he needed to do, together with other presidential advisors was simply to ensure and remind the boss that the said letter was printed,signed and delivered the following day, than for him to expose the boss in parliament because that could lead one to think the VIP is working against his boss……..every one who watched the news heard the pronouncement.

What is said in Parliament is not necessarily what one would say outside Parliament. Parliament is serious and sober business. The diliberations in Parliament are recorded and kept as records. Guy Scott was just being sober when he said Chikwelete was self imposed. There is no way Guy would have accepted the fact that PF and its President were without order in Parley. No way. If he had accepted that Chikwelete was Lusaka District Chair in Parliament he would have confirmed that PF has NO ORDER. Guy Scott was simply giving PF some dignity. Political mileage and ascension to high offices is premised on foot soldiers, volunteers, sympathisers, essentially, political cadres. This is universal. The only difference is the manner and culture in which the cadres are groomed and directed. It is political suicide to avoid/reason/ditch or belittle these political stalwarts. If that occurs, they simply switch party regalia and slogans, and easily de-campaign their former party. This is why, for better or for worse, the party cadre will carry more political leverage than the well meaning political technocrats of the day. The ‘self-appointed’ District Chairman is no fool, but politically well placed, and extremely privy to certain information. Recall how he calmly was eye-balling Dr Solomon Jere as he was begging for his help.
