MMD as a party still supports the 50+1 clause-Muhabi Lungu

The opposition MMD has refuted media reports suggesting that it is no longer in support of the inclusion of the 50 + 1 clause in the country’s new constitution.

MMD presidential Spokesperson Muhabi Lungu has told Qfm news in a telephone interview that the position of the party has not changed on the 50 + 1 clause and that this is also the submission the party made during the provincial constitutional conferences the Technical Committee held in the country.

Mr. Lungu says the statement attributed to MMD Liuwa Member of Parliament Situmbeko Musokotwane on the said clause as quoted in the media was made in his individual capacity and does not represent the position of the MMD.

He adds that he spoke to Dr. Musokotwane over the issue who said he had been quoted out of context.

Mr. Lungu explains that Dr. Musokotwane was merely suggesting that he supports the fact that a government must be formed by a majority and not a minority except that he believes that perhaps the 50 +1 clause was not the only way of forming a majority government.

And Mr. Lungu says the other position the MMD strongly holds is that the referendum on the country’s new constitution must be held next year.

Mr. Lungu says the country does not need a whitepaper as the mode of adoption of the new constitution.

  1. This confusion in PF has spilled over to MMD now, the other day Musokontwani was was against the 50+1 and today its another member saying something…lets hope we all wont end up confused…

  2. MMD, you have been forced to swallow the bitter pill! When you were in power you opposed the concept, and in fact one FTJ ensured it was removed from the constitution. Now that you are in the opposition, it makes sense to you too! This is how you politicians make us lose direction as a country.

  3. Don’t worry bwana Muhabi our great MMD party shall rise again and push these illiterate home wreckers and PFools back to their political oblivion.Look what they did to our record forex reserves. These nation wreckers can never earn over 50+1

  4. Zambian Leaders, one says this today and the following day the other one rises and says that yet they say they believe in one thing as a team. I am now afraid if this confusion will not spill to all of us now. In court just yesterday a China man says there was no corruption with H E. R. Banda and the DPP said no!!! You are jailed for refusing that.

Now you will hear that we should instead send the senior Chipolopolo to the world in place of Shipolopolo who qualified. Maaawe maawe zambia, were ar u taking us, Zambia, were is your strength and virtue you are boosting about, Zambia, Zambia, Zambia, were are you in this planet earth. Maaawe maawe maawe………..

  5. AND WHERE WILL MMD GARNER THE 51 % SUPPORT TO WIN AN ELECTION WHEN THEY ARE SCORING LESS THAN 2% IN BYE ELECTIONS-LOL

  6. MMD has never changed one bit. They have not really looked at why they lost elections. If Panga Fella is not smart it will go the same way as MMD. They will give a chance to the opposition to come together and fight it with the help of the NGOs using a common go, the consistution. This is the strategy which was used by former PF to win sympath of the people.

    • Chib, please read all the previous draft constitution reports, the 51 percent clause was removed by MMD and FTJ due to political insecure.

    • pio! exactly my point they want to carry on the NCC way on the white paper. They lost it they still want to go the same way.

  7. People don’t get it. The point is taste of time. I know 50+1 Seems some odd idea but 50yrs from now the country will appreciate it.

  8. 50% + 1 is a sure way to get rid of tribal politics.Since no political party would be able to take power through tribal strongholds, they will be forced to form alliances with other parties and across tribal regions.Zambians should now be braced for a new era of coalition governments.
It’s about time we begun doing politics differently. We have been doing the same things for far too long.Progress, please
