Zambia’s 2013 Cecafa Cup Group D opponents on Sunday Burundi have taken command of the pool after Thursday’s round one of games played in Machakos in Kenya.
The 2014 CHAN finalist were made to work hard for the three points by Somalia who surprised their opponents by holding out for most of the opening 43 minutes of the first half.
Somalia almost took a shock lead in the 22nd minute when their highly rated 17-year-old striker Saadiq Abdulkadir from AFC Leopards in Kenya fired a curling shot from just inside the area that the Burundi goalkeeper struggled to collect.
Eight minutes later, the woodwork denied Burundi the lead after Celestin Habonimana’s shot came off the horizontal, bounced off the line, and then flew back into play.
Habonimana later put the ball into the back of the net in the 40th minute but his goal was ruled out for offside.
But two minutes later, Christophe Nduwarugira made no mistake after capitalizing on some sloppy Somalia defending to slot in a close-range shot.
Burundi then sealed the three points in the 53rd minute through Abdul Razak Fiston who whipped in the ball from a Nduwarugira cross.
However, Burundi were given a scare when the impressive Abdulkadir blasted a 60th minute shot just inches wide of the post to deny Somalia a share of the points.
Burundi have three points, two more than Zambia and Tanzania who drew 1-1 in the second match of their Group B doubleheader.
Somalia are bottom ahead of their penultimate game against Tanzania in Sunday’s Group B doubleheader at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi.
