Kambwili plays down Club Games medal hopes

Share

Sports minister Chishimba Kambwili says he is not optimistic Zambia will reap any medals at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland.

Kambwili admitted that sports associations developmental strategies are currently not medal oriented.

“Of course every country wants to win medals at every event,” Kambwili said at a press briefing in Luanshya on Saturday.

“But I think by and large we still have a lot of work to do in preparing our athletes.

“When we went to Cuba, we found that they were preparing Under-13 for the 2024 Olympics Games, and with us in Zambia we start these preparations two months before the event.”

The Glasgow Games will be held from July 23-August 3 and team Zambia will go into camp in April.

“So as much as we want to reap medals, we must admit that as a country that we are ill-equipped and we are not ready for these medals at the moment until such a time that we put in measures the way other countries are doing,” Kambwili said.

Zambia failed to reach the medal brackets at the 2012 Olympic Games in London and prior to that won a silver in chess including bronze in the netball and Women’s Judo at the 2011 All Africa Games in Maputo.

“Under the new sports policy that we are coming up with, all these things will be streamlined and until such a time, that is when I will become hopeful of us winning medals,” Kambwili said.

  1. Apprecite what Chishimba is saying as a concerned Zambian and not as yo arch enermy,pf leader. What has been happening in almost all sporting activities is pathetic and shows how unpatriotic, docile, lazy, uncreativite Zediens can be.

    • He is a concerned Zambian who has the power to do something about it. Unlike some of us who can only complain from the spectators’ stands

  2. Kambwili, says,as a country. That is collectively. That includes himself and his govt. That’s a mark of wisdom.from that background it is possible to come up with tangible solutions. All must indeed acknowledge that, “We as a nation we’re to blame.”

    • We have no grange against him, but the issue is that when in doubt wy sent a weak team?
As everyone has the right to speak, but critical thinking is required at times. some cadres will support anything as said by their masters? eg””””’

  3. Sport is not only an essential part of human existence its an industry. The government should support this industry and a lot of the unemployed will get off the streets. Floyd Mayweather, Mike Tyson and even Muihammad Ali would have found themselves as criminals in the streets had they not been born in a country with a sports industry as the US. Haile Gebreselassie and plenty of other East African athletes are rich people who could have died from poverty because of sport. So Bwana Minister lets have a 20 year plan for a sports revolution in Zed. Its your job.. not to lament the lack of sportsmen

  4. Iwe Chidumbo you are in office. You can do something about the situation. Stop complaining and effect policy to make sport a successful venture. And Sata thinks he has ministers. Fat people without any ideas except to get paid on taxpayers’ money.

  5. Imwe you mean you haven’t started preparations?Kwena pa Zed!Don.t send spectators there then instead of wasting taxpayers money which can pay UTH fired nurses
