Some concerned farmers in Mpongwe have accused seed manufacturing companies in the country of selling them fake seed varieties popularly known as “Changanya” in the district.
One of the affected farmers, Patrick Mangangu said that seed companies in the area have a tendency of supplying them fake seed packs with tags indicating that it has been graded when in fact not.
ZANIS reports that Mr. Mangangu kin an interview in Mpongwe district yesterday disclosed that a physical inspection of seed supplied to farmers in the district revealed a mixture of seed varieties.
“ What has been happening is that seed companies have been selling seed with tags showing that it has been graded, for example when you open a bag, you find that there is large seed in there, medium seed and small seed, ” He said.
He stressed that small scale farmers have hence continued to receive undesired seed which has led to negative effects on their plant population.
Mr. Mangangu added that seed companies have a duty to uphold honesty and due diligence in their business with small scale farmers.
He has since demanded for all seed companies to clearly separate graded and ungraded seed through markings.
“They should clearly mark the seed ungraded so that the farmer knows that he is getting ungraded seed.” He said.
Efforts to get a comment from the district agricultural coordinator proved futile by broadcast time.

In Zambia seed marketing companies may as well be recycling seed for never have I heard that excess seed for any elapsed planting season has been destroyed (burnt).

If this is indeed the case these seed companies are just committing day light robbery and fraud and should be prosecuted. It is not even about the seeds being mixed or graded since the whole purpose of seed companies existence is to provide superior/hybrid seeds and sale and price their seeds accordingly. There are also very few seed companies so this should be an issue that can be very easily and swiftly investigated by the relevant authorities. As the seed bags are labelled it should not be too difficult to identify the culprits.
You must be mad to think HH has the interests of the farmer, what has HH done for farmers and the agricultural sector except selling his meat at high prices to exploitative firms like Zambeef??? You HH supporters are blind to reality..The PF govt has done more to improve agriculture than any other govt since the days of UNIP, how does a capitalist economist that is an exponent of free market capitalism ever have the good intentions of the common everyday farmer??? Anyway the die is cast and its now just a few days before the dependants and bloodsuckers that are sucking and cheating HH out of his ill begotten riches will be dissapointed as the obvious will happen and Edgar C. Lungu will be the next President of Zambia and so say the good people of Zambia!!!
