The Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection-JCTR- has welcomed President EDGAR LUNGU’s proposal to use the electronic voting system in next general election.

JCTR Executive Director Leonard Chiti says the system will lower the cost at which elections are conducted by the Electoral Commission of Zambia ECZ.

Father Chiti adds that the concept will also improve efficiency in the transmission of result from remote places.

He has however, urged Government to carry out massive sensitization programs on the effectiveness of E-voting.

Father Chiti was speaking to ZNBC News in an interview in Lusaka.

President Lungu while in Namibia last week, announced that government is considering the introduction of E- voting in next year’s elections.

Namibia uses the E-voting system.

  1. The idea of electronic voting is good but the timing is not right. GRZ should first resolve pending constitution issues.

    • PF is looking for loopholes, other parties should not accept this. If PF was a well meaning govt, they should have started with printing the ballot papers locally to reduce the heamorraging of the dollar. Recall e-voting is not cheap to setup in a country which has lower electricity coverage and poor internet connectivity too. PF start discussions on food security, unemployment, completion of road contraction projects and negotiating with the civil servants for their conditions of service in the face of high cost of living. As for the JCTR please find better things to engage the govt in, which will benefit the poor.

    • There is no infrastructure that can allow for E-voting Zambia. What Lungu should know that E-voting needs reliable internet connection and reliable power supply, both of which Zambia lacks.

Why do you think that bigger economies such as Kenya, Nigeria, Ethiopia and SA are not yet using E-voting? Even some EU countries still vote on the ballot paper. There is more that needs to be done and i don’t think Zambia will be in a position to use e-voting anytime soon.

Namibia has e-voting because they have invested heavily in internet connectivity, almost the whole country has internet and Load-shedding is a term not used in Namibia. On the other hand, less than 30 of Zambia is connected to the internet.

But anyway, people are allowed to dream and EL is one bigger dreamer.

    • It will be impossible to remove PF peacefully with e-voting. Ask the guy who rigged the Talk-time competition.

    • Isn`t poverty alleviation supposed to top priority for NGOs? Isn`t this NGO supposed to be talking about the dilapidation of Ndola Central Hospital?!

And yet they are busy talking about E-voting just because Lungu saw it implemented in a well managed country. The problem is that most of these NGOs are run by chaps hooked to begging for a living, with no brains to think through issues before making statements.

  2. We need a lot of senstisation otherwise my grandmother in the village will be denied her right to vote.

  3. There are other pending and immediate priorities that need fast attention such as the constitution. If the govt concentrates on e-voting, it will misuse a lot of time and resources for a ‘non-issue’,

    • But who said that Government is concetrating on E-voting than the constitution. When did consindering became concentrating?

  4. There are other pending and immediate priorities that need fast attention such as the constitution. If the govt concentrates on e-voting, it will misuse a lot of time and resources for a ‘non-issue’, Learn to put your priorities right.

  5. Really, really! Don’t start with me, you are failing to maintain the ECZ website and you want to go that route. Please think before you spew words that are not palatable.
The efficacy of doing that is for your political gain.

  7. @Blago: I concur. This I say unapologetically and without fear of contradiction. NGOs and more recently including religious-based, have been making misleading and unsubstantiatable statements preying for donor funds throwing our continent to the ‘dogs’. Certain remarks require thorough research as many citizens take their stand as the valid position,

  8. this is a good idea as long as it comes with the structures that can support it. this is one of the positives that came with the Namibia visit, lets hope every foreign trip comes with some positive idea. right now we are way behind in internet connectivity.

let the pull him downs learn from this. provide alternatives instead of just insulting…
