Youth and Sport Minister Vincent Mwale has called for the declaration of the Chabuka crossing point from the Democratic Republic of the Congo into Zambia in Matanda Chiefdom in Mansa District as a historical site.

Mr. Mwale made the call yesterday during the Chabuka Traditional Ceremony which is celebrated by the Ushi people of Luapula Province.

He said the site should be preserved and protected by all Zambians because of its historical significance as many tribes currently present in Zambia crossed into Zambia from Congo through the same point.

Mr. Mwale also called for all the tribes that used the point when crossing into Zambia to participate in the ceremony as the event could be used as a uniting factor of all the tribes that crossed into Zambia through the same point.

The Minister said the site is important to the nation and should be promoted as a tourist attraction in the region.

Mr. Mwale said the Chewas, Tumbukas, Nsengas and Kundas of Eastern Province must have crossed into Zambia by the same crossing point and must honor the crossing point.

He praised the people of Matanda to have been peaceful and good people for having allowed other tribes to pass through their chiefdom without acts of violence.

Mr. Mwale also called for proper organization of the site and building permanent structures for accommodation of tourists visiting the site.

He donated 30 pockets of cement towards the initial efforts of starting to construct permanent structures at the site.

Speaking earlier, Luapula Province Permanent Secretary Boniface Chimbwali called for the construction of well planned permanent structures to accommodate tourists and other visiting dignitaries to the area.

The Permanent Secretary also called for early planning for the ceremony by working on the road leading to the site in good time.

  1. That crossing has ensured the destruction of Zambia by allowing the entry of theives from Congo into Zambia. 95 % of theives caught looting government resources are originally from Congo.

  2. Did those chiefs in fancy shiny suits also undertake the crossing? Its no surprise these rulers want increase in the salaries to buy silly hats and suits.

  3. You can have you views and perception at the same time make valuable contributions but they don’t always have to contain insults.

  4. Good to see that we are recognizing our historical events. But, lets put measures to ensure no one is eaten by a croc during the crossing. The Luapula river looks beautiful….as always!
