Katongo fires Zambia to CHAN quarterfinals

Share

Captain Christopher Katongo scored as Zambia advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2016 African Nations Championship (CHAN) after overcoming Uganda 1-0 in the two sides second Group D match in Rubavu on Saturday evening.

Katongo, who was voted man of the match, headed in a Cletus Chama free kick after 41 minutes.

The experienced Green Buffaloes striker earlier in the first half saw his low shot cleared of the line.

The victory helped Zambia to stay top of the group with six points after two games where they also maintain their two point lead.

George Lwandamina’s Chipolopolo will now wrap-up their Group D action on Wednesday with a game against Mali in Kigali to decided who finishes top ahead of the January 31 quarterfinals.

Meanwhile in the early afternoon kickoff, Zimbabwe were eliminated from the CHAN after losing 1-0 to second placed Mali.

Moussa Sissko scored the winner in the 82nd minute to send Zimbabwe out of the tournament after two successive defeats.

Zimbabwe lost by the same margin to Zambia in their opening game on January 19.

Zambia have 6 points, Mali are second on 4 points, Uganda are 3rd on 1 point while Zimbabwe have zero points.

    • As long as its not an under this or under that tournament, Chipolopolo can play any qualifying player of any age in any tournament as long as he’s Zambian – which Katongo is !!!!

    • @Wanu Ngwee, Chris is still young he has another 10 years to play. Problem Zambian players starts playing national team at 16 yrs old, like Mayuka or Mbola. 16 +20 years of play is just 36 years old!!
Only Kalusha played 20 years in national team.

  1. The way you title your headline ba LT is worrying mwe! “Katongo fires Zambia to CHAN quarterfinals” I was a bit worried when I saw the title not until I read the article. Please can you hire appropioriate editors.
And a big congratulations to our boyz.

    One love.

    • @kärlek:
It is you who needs to go for night school to study English. The title is excellent and even better than I would expect from LT. Can you say exactly what is wrong with title? Otherwise just shut up and don’t bring your ignorance online!!

  2. When an old player like Katongo who is 40+ years is the man of the match …it says alot about that state of Zambian football!!

    • Iwe kalufyuno why are you ever negative? Is it coz of the poo from the old people you have been cleaning which has confused you Namazai iwe. Congrats Chipolopolo

    • @Jay Jay:
Pan.yo pako you pig!! What is wrong with that age? At what age was Roger of Cameroon scoring goals at the World Cup? How about Pele, the Legend?
Useless Ar.sewhores like you who are perennial failures and have never done anything for our country should be the last to issue disparaging remarks against our heroes!! Now go and wash your AN.US!!

    • You are meant to say, African football, and not Zambian football.
Notice, they said ‘man of the match,, i.e. involving two teams zambia and uganda, and not man of the zambian team. Comprende? Or maybe I should translate that into bemba or lozi,,,, or whichever language you wish ba jay jay.

    • ba chilyata, notice how i did not use any vulgar or insulting words on ba jay jay. learn to differ without resorting to vulgarity. mwachilamo manje imwe ma zambians. and by the way i respectfully ask that you stop calling yourselves a christian nation

    • Jay Jay usually invites those insults because of his very anti-Zambia bile. Katongo was man of the match but because of his vendetta against Zambia Jay Jay only sees Katongo as Man of the Zambian team. The purpose? So he can spite Zambia

    • Legendary German midfielder Lothar Matthaus with 150 appearances for the German national football team was named footballer of the year in 1999 at 38 years of age. He previously won the same award in 1990. If Katongo is able to play well and score, what is the fuss. In a game featuring young players, he was also named man of the match.

  3. apropioriate, whats that? if you want to correct others, do it correctly next time otherwise just stay under the blanket. meanwhile, congrats great Kalu n team chipolopolo na ba lwands the coach

  4. • WENA, GET POLITICS OUT OF FOOTBALL OR FOOTBALL OUT OF POLITICS. ARE YOU CRAZY- I MEAN, I AM NOT A SUPPORTER OF UNDER 5, BUT THIS HAS GOT NOTHING TO DO WITH HH IN THE CONTEXT OF POLITICS. YOU MEAN YOU HAVE NOTHING TO DO APART FROM POLITICKING? ZAMBIA WILL ‘NEVER’ DEVELOP BECAUSE OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU WHO SPENDING TOO MUCH TIME AND ENERGY IN THE TOILET. MAN! FORGET ABOUT POLITICS FOR ONCE.

  6. I would like to congratulate Zambia for a win against Uganda. Am Zimbabwean and i admire Zambian players and clubs. I like Chris ‘soldier boy’ Katongo. He is a dedicated, hardworking and disciplined player.

  7. To succeed 100% the breakdown is has following:
70% People – Experienced, skilled and a correct atitude.
    20% Relevant training/ preparation.
10% correct knowledge or intelligence of the competition and the opposition.
Thus far the team is spot on beyond here it becomes a game of lottery.
Ponga Liwewe and his peers must not allow their personal issues with Kalusha cloud their judgement.

  8. My country Zimbabwe is a disappointment. From politics to sports. The soccer team’s nick name should be changed from WARRIORS to WORRY-US. The Zimbabwe local league is experiencing lack of competition becoz all good players are going en mass to South African clubs leaving inferior players playing for local clubs. The Zim refs are worsening the situation by favouring one (1) team, Dynamos fc.
I would like to see Zambian players and coaches coming here to Zimbabwe and join local clubs. This will create competition and help Zimbabwean players.
Lastly, Banda, the Zesco keeper is a hard working guy and deserves a pat on the back.

  9. GUYS IYI 1-0 WIN, INE TAILENSEKESHA (THE 1-0 WIN IS NOT MAKING ME COMFOTABLE). MALI WON ZIMBABWE WITH 1-0, ALSO. SO, PSYCHOLOGICALLY, MALI DOESN’T FEEL DEFEATED BY ZAMBIA. IN FACT IT MAKE THEM VERY STRONG SPIRITED AND PREPARED TO FACE ZAMBIA. THIS IS BECAUSE MALI WAS SECOND RATED. SO, THEY WILL FIGHT TOOTH AND NAIL TO THE UNFORTUNATE POINT OF DEFEATING ZAMBIA. HOW CAN ONLY ONE PERSON SCORE? WHAT WERE THE REST DOING? GUYS, PULL UP YOUR SOCKS AND BE SERIOUS. WE DID NOT START BUILDING STADIA FOR NOTHING.

    • Iwe Peter ufuna onse angenese? The Mali game is now a practice match. Zambia doesn’t need to win it. However I agree the Uganda victory wasn’t impressive. Our team could not string together more than two passes and their ball retention and control skills were below average but I think Chicken Georges philosophy is play ugly but win

  10. Katongo flicked the ball over the goal keeper but you are calling it a low shot. Which match were you watching?
