Women in Media 4 Change host their second mentorship session themed “Unleashing women’s Potential in Media and Sustainable development through mentorship”. With one of Zambia’s exceptional Media Entrepreneurs as Guest speaker; Media personalities working in Film, Fashion, print, Television, Radio and new Media were part of a mentorship programme that is aimed at building a Generation of empowered women, championing sustainable development and taking control of their own stories and rebranding the African narrative.

Supported by Society for Family Health under the Maximum Diva Brand, Multichoice Zambia, The Wine shop and the Best Western Plus Lusaka grand Hotel, Namakau Mukelabai based her mentorship talk on how women should learn from one another’s success, uplift one another, take risks, be entrepreneurial, brand themselves and wise up and take care of their Health.

Women in Media 4 Change is an initiative C0-founded by film maker Jessie Chisi and Media Entrepreneur Patience Chisanga with a vision to have women take ownership of their own stories and be part of sustainable development.

  1. Who are the exceptional Media Entrepreneurs in this article?!

I think there is a trend for fronting groups as Leaders when we should encourage an open society where original creativity and competitive production is the key. I am looking at a young woman or man in a poor township with ambitions to enter a creative market. Can these elitist groups cater for them?

Personally, I am looking at another model for excellence open to all, especially those shut out of mainstream creative industry. My specialist group of fashion designers ( two working with international major designers) will operate from creative spaces at addresses where the poor can access international standard training and mentorship. These type of groups are suspicious for setting up names and faces rather than…

    • Inclusive and noble ideas Ms Patriot. Go for it.

Perhaps this organisation should reach out to ladies like the one who was at Sky and the other two… I think it’s CNN and Fox. They have to start somewhere though. I don’t believe you have to be the most famous to start up something… Just the one with the heart felt genuine intent. But that’s me.

    • @A Phiri

I will send you invite to first shows and gallery openings through LT!! I am on my way home soon!

Talent has its own calling card. A lot of Artists/creatives enjoy collaborating to bring like minds together. But we need to look out for natural raw talent and give it room. Let’s not get too Hollywood ‘shutting out genders, race, economic groups etc’ out of the norm of large groupings.

    • Awesome! I’ll be sure to spread the word and send supportive people your way. It’s not all cut throat but stay on top of your game for the concept of helping sometimes irks those who have made a career out of ‘helping’. Treading on toes without knowing it and all that. Keep a thick skin and do not deviate from your path. The ones you are targeting will never let you down. It is needed.

    • Thank you for advice. Career helpers usually face off for funding! Luckily we are going to be completely self funded and completely inclusive (idealistic maybe!).

    • Patriot abroad, Thank you for your recommendations and comment. We wish you all the best with your Model. Ours is just our two cents to help women working in media to utilize these platforms to address certain social challenges and to help them blossom into something more than just media personalities. We are doing this through promoting collaboration among women in media. We hope soon to embark on activities that will involve reaching out to schools and rural areas and volunteering our time to see what challenges we can help with. For now what we are offering are mentorship sessions. Please google Namakau Mukelelabai. I am not sure if you are in Zambia at the moment but she is looked up to by many because of her work in media, corporate communications and entrepreneurship, the reason she…

    • @womem in Media thank you for expanding on the article and providing more information. I am pleased to hear about your programmes. I will be sure to look you up.

Apologies if I appeared critical, but the thrust was the lack of detail on the set up. It’s important we include particularly those not able to have access to a creative industry.

Thank you for taking time to explain further.

  2. These type of groups are suspicious for setting up names and faces based on stature rather than…real talent. I may be unfair in reading it this way, but Zambians love these type of groupings.

It’s sounds like they mean well but from the article I fail to glean much to judge their purpose accurately.
