Chinese Ambassador to Zambia Yang Youming has dismissed reports in Zambian media that China has been selling human meat as food in Africa.
Reports on social media and a local newspaper quoted an unnamed Zambian woman living in China warning people to stop buying Chinese corned beef.
The woman claimed that Chinese beef companies were collecting dead human bodies, marinating them, packing them in tins labelled as corned beef and sending them to Africa.
“I discovered it a few weeks ago, when I was invited to an interview in a large beef packing company. However, I was later chased away when they discovered that I was from Southern Africa” she said.
‘I don’t know why they do this to Africa, I think it’s all because of the growing population so they don’t have where to bury their dead anymore.”
Ambassador Youming issued a statement expressing how unfortunate it was that people with ulterior motives were attempting to destroy the long-standing partnership between Zambia and China.
“Today a local tabloid newspaper is openly spreading a rumour, claiming that the Chinese use human meat to make corned beef and sell it to Africa. This is completely a malicious slandering and vilification which is absolutely unacceptable to us,” he said in a statement.
“We hereby express our utmost anger and the strongest condemnation over such an act,” he added.
The Chinese envoy has since asked relevant government departments in Zambia to investigate the tabloid and source of the rumour in order to clear the name of the Chinese people.
Deputy Defence Minister Christopher Mulenga has since promised that the government will launch investigations into the reports.
“The government of Zambia regrets the incident in view of the warm relations that exist between Zambia and China. We shall make sure that relevant government authorities will take up the investigations and give a comprehensive statement,” he said.

Eat Chinese meat at your peril! Even here in the USA, we call Chinese meat found in their restaurants “mystery meat”. Not too long ago, BBC carried a report in which at least 900 Chinese restaurateurs where arrested in China for selling Fox meat in their restaurants. About a year ago, another one was arrested in North Carolina for selling road kill. In my county, one was arrested for letting dogs in the back room of his restaurant. In Newyork the Chinese are known to sell rat meat and pass it out as chicken. These are stories you can verify on BBC, ABC News, WSVN etc.
If they can sell rats, dogs, foxes and road kill in China and USA, then I am not surprised by this story. I have vowed to never, ever eat from a Chinese restaurant!
Just the idea that Zambians, in Zambia, eating canned beef or any stuff from China is very, very troubling. There`s is a lot of clean, good and pure food at community markets in all the towns and cities. The major problem in Zambia is that majority of the people think eating foreign packaged or canned food is high standard of life, colonialism really did a lot of mental-damage.
And this is what the Chinese have been looking for when they give aid to countries like Zambia—Market for their dirty food and resources. Its really sad.

The Minister must not necessarily investigate the Media or its source. Instead, he must investigate the meat products from China that are on our market shelves, as of first importance. Chinese businesses are capable of doing anything to make a lot of money.
Get in the exparts of our beloved country to investigate this. If the results are not conclusive, ban the products.

Its the Chinese themselves to do damage control to protect their business of alleged human beef. The best thing you may do is to ban beef imports from China, warn citizens & promote local beef until results of Chinese investigations are out or just watch from the terraces. Though this rumour may come from enemies of china, its worth to note that the Chinese are still carrying out mass executions & whoever speaks about it including George Bush they get upset & for them as long as something has no poison it is food. First the facts:
China does have enough meat to be able to export beef. In fact they don’t produce beef. Most (if any) of their beef and milk are imported from Australia and elsewhere.
Beef is so scarce in China that they resort to eating dogs and cats as alternative. This is a fact. I have interacted with Chinese guys who have said they in fact eat dogs and cats.
So given this background, I don’t understand how and why they would export beef in a can. This is unusual.
Where I live, the majority of people who travel to China choose to stay away from eating beef because you could never know what you are actually eating.

If there is one thing I miss about Zambia, it’s the tasty and health organic food, especially beef, chicken and fresh water fish. Growing up in Barotseland village, man I miss ‘real’ food.
As for the story, I reckon it’s a hoax. I mean why can’t our regulators carry out some tests on a sample of canned beef to prove it is indeed a hoax?

The ambassador is only concerned about clearing the name of the Chinese and investigating the tabloid. He has not talked about verification of the product by testing and finding out what the contents contain therein. There is every reason to think and believe otherwise! It is really bad because Zambians are now resorting to importing everything, if we are not care we will start importing maize too!

Whether the story is true or a hoax, I will not eat any meat from China. where i live we have better things from China but the same kind of things bought in Zambia or Africa are of sub standard. Let the Chinese in Zambia eat their own meat (real or human). Sad that Zambians think that everything imported is good for them.
