THE United National Independence Party (UNIP) in Southern Province will float more youthful candidates for the August 11, 2016 General elections at all levels contrary to claims from some sections of society that the party is full of old people, Provincial Chairperson Robert Mukengami has said.

Capt (retired) Mukengami also said most of the young people, who had been adopted to contest elections in Livingstone, were females.

Speaking in an interview in Livingstone yesterday, Capt Mukengami said the youngest adopted candidate aspiring to be a councillor in Livingstone was 18 years old.

He said the former ruling party was expected to unveil a list of adopted candidates and the campaign strategy in Livingstone tomorrow (Thursday).

“On Thursday (May 26, 2016), around 9hrs, UNIP in Southern Province will unveil a list of aspiring councillors and Members of Parliament for Southern Province.

“UNIP has changed the politics in Livingstone as we are the only party that has chosen the youngest team to contest this year’s elections,” he said.

Capt Mukengami also said UNIP in Southern Province managed to recruit 100 provincial supporters for the party president.

“I am in Choma right now where we have more than 250 supporters who have turned up at the provincial capital to support our presidential candidate Tilyenji Kaunda,” Capt Mukengami said.

  1. Uuuuuum!
UNIP will never bounce back to power, 27 years was & still enough to 5 tenures under democracy.
UNIP could have had 5 successive presidents in that 27 years, e.g Mainza Chona, Kapwepwe, Mundia, Kamanga or Gray Zulu.
Bye bye UNIP, bye bye MMD & bye bye bye bye bye PF.
    Vote wisely!

  2. Dreamers. 18 years candidate? Probably still staying with the mother and failed to get into college.

  3. Surely is Tilwenji normal? How can one be president of UNIP for life? This man has been president of UNIP more than his father was president of Zambia and when does he hope to win the presidency of Zambia. Does he still stay in Zimbabwe? UNIP is a party that should long have disbanded or if not atleast change leadership. Why isnt the party attracting formidable names? We hope from this youthful pull of potential MPs, a new leader for the party will emerge. Tilwenji if you do not know or if noone has told you, you have helped kill UNIP. UNIP needs to merge with other parties to survive. Nawakwi, Msoni, Mulongoti, Chipimo, Cosmo Mumba, Sakala’s parties would be very good candidates. I hope the oldman KK can help convince you Tilwenji to quit.

  4. And this ladies and gentlemen is the reason UNIP should continue disappearing into oblivion and should never be resurrected. Please keep your old way of thinking to yourself which is damaging to our economy. 18 years old are you serious? You read articles of women empowerment and want to throw this in to sound intelligent but its the opposite effect. We need to educate our young into leadership roles but they need an education meaning a real grade 12, a real diploma, a real degree and a real masters degree. Meanwhile we can have them take coops during school holidays and work with those in government preparing them for those roles. Your method of cooking chicken for a minute expecting it to be ready is dangerous. Keep quiet and stay hidden thanks!
