A PATRIOTIC Front (PF) supporter in Livingstone has been attacked by suspected United Party for National Development (UPND) cadres thereby leaving him with a deep cut on the head.
The incident occurred on Wednesday night barely within 24 hours after five political parties in Livingstone, which included PF and UPND, held a joint media briefing to denounce political violence and attacks on journalists in this year’s elections.
George Ngoma, 39, of house number 203 in Dambwa Central was attacked near Leisure Gardens in Dambwa Site and Service by seven suspected UPND cadres who were driving an unknown motor vehicle.
Southern Province Police Commissioner Godwin Phiri confirmed the incident yesterday.
“The police at Livingstone Central Police station has received a report of Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm in which George Ngoma, a PF official aged 39 of Dambwa Central in Livingstone was assaulted on Wednesday by seven suspected UPND cadres around 19 00 hours.
“The victim sustained a deep cut on the left side of his head and it was reported that the assailants used a sharp instrument believed to be a machete while the perpetuators of this act were reported to be clad in UPND red berets and T-shirts,” Mr Phiri said.
He said the police were investigating the matter and that those responsible for the act would be arrested.
In a related development, Mr Phiri disclosed that suspected UPND cadres stormed Victoria Hall in Livingstone on Wednesday and threatened Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) officers with a knife.
“Suspected UPND cadres stormed Victoria Hall, where the verification of voters was being conducted and threated ECZ officers with a knife on Wednesday at around 17 hours.
“We have since launched investigations aimed at bringing to book all the culprits involved,” he said.
Livingstone PF Constituency Chairperson, Elias Mwila said the ruling party in Livingstone was saddened at the developments that had occurred soon after all political parties pledged to denounce political violence.
Mr Mwila appealed to the police to quickly bring the perpetrators of violence to book.
But UPND Livingstone spokesperson Neto Halwabala called on the police to fully investigate the matter before pointing a finger at the UPND.
Mr Halwabala claimed that his party was aware of other political parties who were in the habit of buying UPND regalia and used it to propagate violence to paint a bad picture on the opposition party.

I was asking for the price of a regalia in response to the foolish upnd official who tried to justify the violent conduct by his cadres by stating that people are buying their regalia to paint it.i can never ever put on upnd regalia never.i would rather walk naked.
