UPND officials in Livingstone are threatening to resign from the party and stay away its campaigns following information that the party has adopted former Livingstone deputy mayor Mathews Jere who is under investigations by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The officials have threatened that once the party settles for Jere, then; the ruling PF’s Omar Munsanje will have an opportunity to go an opposite as Jere might be arrested.
The situation is reported to have changed after UPND provincial chairman Billiard Makwembo and other officials attempted to influence the process in favor Mathews Jere.
According to the information which was circulating among party officials in Livingstone, Makwembo and other senior party officials are alleged to have received money from Jere so that he can be adopted.
By law, Mathews Jere does not qualify to stand as a Member of Parliament due to the fact that the Livingstone City Council was suspended for gross misconduct by councilors by the Local Government Minister Stephen Kampyongo.
It further states that anyone who is removed from office due to misconduct does not qualify to stand for any political office.
Last week, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) issued a statement that UPND Livingstone central aspiring candidate Mathews Jere was under investigation in connection with the illegal sale of a piece of land in the tourist capital.

In Chirundu new constituency we want the UPND to adopt Mr. Workwell Siamaili as a preferred candidate for Chirundu Constituency. In the just ended primary elections Mr. Siamaili got 82 votes beating other contenders, he was seconded by Mr. Kamwaya with 60 votes, Mr. Douglas Syakalima got 30 votes and the former FODEP Executive Director Mac Donald Chipenzi only managed to get 9 votes. If Mr. Siamaili is not adopted we are going to vote for the PF candidate. Mr. Siamaili has done a lot for the people of Chirundu and he is very popular. This is the man people want to be adopted by the NMC as their most preferred candidate.
