Police in Lusaka has picked up three suspects in connection with a video which has gone viral in which a woman is sexually and physically abused by a group of men.

Police Spokesman Rae Hamoonga confirmed that the three men were picked up to help police with investigations.

And several women groups this morning held a press briefing at WLSA National Office to protest against the rising levels of violence towards women and children.

The event which was held under the theme “Awaken the Women of Zambia to Rise up and Fight Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) and Gender Based Violence (GBV) was also attended by some men who came to offer solidarity.

The press briefing follows growing outrage at the video which surfaced this week showing a woman believed to be a resident of Kafue being sexually and physically abused by a group of men.

Addressing the press briefing, WLSA Board Chairperson Ms. Priscilla Chileshe urged women and men who have suffered incidences of sexual harassment to report to the police.

Mrs Chileshe also urged the police to investigate all cases of sexual harassment, intimidation and all other forms of gender based crimes.

“As a women’s organisation we believe in equal rights for men and women and economic empowerment for all. Therefore, women and children need to be protected,” she said.
Mrs Chileshe said it is disappointing that cases of GBV have continued rising despite strengthening the law dealing with the vice.

  1. When will the Police also arrest the PF cadres that stripped and humiliated a UPND in the presences of at least 6 police officers. IG Kanganja should have been fired by now, but we have a very meek Commander in Chief

    • It ain’t going away especially if people who are perpetrators of GBV can aim for high positions in government and these so called NGO’s are passive about it……………they’ve all been silent on GBM’s appointment and yet he’s committed GBV on numerous occasions.

    • Time they protested against GBM as well. It is an insult to the country to have certified women abusers like him running for public office

    • Publicly humiliate these animals and jail them for life and cut off their pathetic sick peni.ses in the process. Only real men deserve peni.ses.

    • Shame on you women’s groups are going home from rally and accept beatings from your men and you are the same people who will vote for GBM a woman brutalizer

You should protest GBM to get off the ballot, then perhaps the issue of domestic violence in Zambia will be taken seriously.

    • We have said it time again that there are no sanctuary cities in Zambia for marauders. The blood of innocent Zambian murdered by the GBV league in a despicable way on a free Zambian girl in Kafue will and not find refuge anywhere from prosecution. Democracy does not insulate criminal acts from prosecution. The horrible video on the social media precisely show that it was posted from a UPND dungeon by someone now on wanted list.

    • @ Zebige
It is also insult to the country to have as President CONVICTED EMBEZZLER who has pardoned CONVICTED RAPIST of minor for a song of praise!!!

    • Lungu will forgive the thugs, he doesn’t see anything wrong with this kind of behavior
Wonder why he and his government have been silent.

  2. The Video is very sad to see and regrettable, thats not the way to leave, people should learn to be tolerant…. But these women organisations should be consistent and serious, they dont condemn when an act has been perpetrated by a woman, like that woman who is suspected of killing the husband… They are all quiet!!!

  3. Women should also learn to respect themselves first especially in the public. I love my woman ? and I respect all women

    • Koko Man, so by that you’re suggesting that you resort to violence to address women that don’t respect themselves…including your wife who you profess to love.

    • @ 1mbecile above
And “humble”; “visionary” and “anointed” CONVICTED EMBEZZLER President specialty is to pardon CONVICTED RAPIST of MINOR for a song of praise?!?
Which one is the “cursed” one? CONVICTED one or ACCUSED one?

  4. Today’s women are saying; we want what MEN have without friction and they have got it! It’s now UP with the Petticoats and DOWN with the trousers, not the other way round like it was those years gone-by…

  6. If an action was taken against those pfools who stripped an innocent woman in full view of the vice president and the police force this would have not happened.

  7. #BA sebenza even a hardcore thief with a proven record who stole from a window and you entrust him with the keys to the national treasury definately he will become rich in a year for instance Edgar chakolwa Kaloba Wrungu.

    • How can there be free elections when President Lungu is using recently pardoned jail birds and ex convicts to brutalise citizens from associating with the opposition?.

There is no free campaign this time cos Lungu militia is causing havoc.

  8. ba sebenza I agree,I think we are overlooking this GBV machete trainer expert, ofcourse the video was barberic no doubt but just because GBV I mean GBM was not captured on video on several occasions doesn’t mean hes acts cant equally be justified in courts, he clearly admitted beating his wife in the name of love, ati I beat her coz I love her, mmmm ine A?

  11. Those dumb nyakers are in the deepest darkest doo doo that they can ever imagine.

Instead of protecting the punani they abused a woman that was knocked out by a thug. Now they face life sentences. The guy that kicked her in the face, faces 19 years for assault and indecent assault.

  12. I have no doubt in my mind those criminals are PF cadres and the poor woman is UPND. The cause will go cold very soon, like the one Mrs Vice president Wina watched with IG kanganja. I have time to time viewed that video and I see Kanganja and Davies Chama smiling and Mumbi Phiri looking at her legs as if she was comparing her private parts to that of the poor UPND woman

  13. USA, EU please help Zambia

For how can there be free elections when President Lungu is using recently pardoned jail birds and ex convicts to brutalise citizens from associating with the opposition?.

By the way, our President is a thief worse than Zuma. He looted K13 million in one year.

    • Let this sink in your big tonga skull….Ifintu ni lungu by hook or crook….zonda uzalema wenyo!

  14. These cases seem to be HOT in the beginning and just die natural dearth. This we should NOT ALLOW. We want information on the proceedings and as many people arrested including those who were watching the incidence and taking photos of the lady’s nakedness.

  15. Women should also support men who are sexually abused by women, let them do the same to some men who are victim ofGBV

  16. If a self confessed serial wife batterer can aim and run for the second highest office of the land how can gender based violence end…in the video the lady mentions a mans name telling him ‘you are not my husband’ and he responds ‘I am’ and then violently kicks her in the face where she collapses as the other men join in beating her the same way GBM beats his wife and mocks her then when he calms down he buys her a new car or flies her off on a shopping spree….right now as he goes around on his campaigns his ‘cousin’ has again started speaking with his wife using a ‘disguised’ number even he doesn’t have…but he can batter her all he wants she wont stop because he is a brutal and cruel person

  17. 14 people died due to political violence but not protests done. This is the reason why people can not take you seriously on this case because a loss of life is more grave than GBV. Let us learn to call a spade a spade, we are not serious as citizens period

  19. Stupid politicians are bringing up the case of how scared they are of Gbm! Stop politicising Gbv! What about the release of rapists from prisons literally for a praise song??

  20. This is what happens when you live in a country whose laws are geared towards protecting Men and not Women. How long must this brutality go on? Why are people allowed to get away with such grotesque behavior? I hope this serves as a lesson to all those traditional and backward thinking Men who think they can do whatever they want to a woman and be protected by silence. We demand respect and equality for all humans regardless of gender. People need to wake up and get over themselves, a woman is not a piece of property that can be used and discarded as you see fit.
