Government says it will spend 20 million United States dollars on procurement and distribution of Light Emitting Diode (LED) lamps in order to reduce the energy deficit in the country.

Ministry of Energy and Water Development Permanent Secretary Brigadier General Emeldah Chola disclosed this in a speech read on her behalf by the Energy Director Oscar Kalumiana.

This was during a workshop on energy efficiency indicators held at Pamodzi Hotel in Lusaka today.

Brigadier Chola stated that this intervention will save the country about 200 megawatts, equivalent to a virtual power plant, at a cost of US$ 400 million.

She added that government has provided a number of incentives such as tax exceptions on energy saving and renewable energy technologies through the statutory instrument number 32 and 33 of 2008 and 89 of 2010.

Brigadier Chola also said ZESCO limited has been installing prepaid metres and distributing free energy saving bulbs countrywide and that over 1. 6million bulbs have been distributed so far.

The Energy Permanent Secretary lamented that Zambia is currently experiencing a power deficit due to low water levels in the country’s reservoirs, adding that the situation resulted into a severe deficit of about 1000MW in December 2015.

The Energy Efficiency Quick Actions and Electricity Indicators Project is being implemented between the Zambian government and the European Union under the Umbrella of the Technical Assistance Facility (TAF)

    • $20million can buy a huge thernal power station than these schemes meant to create a company cash cow for Lungu and his stooges.

Instead of solving the problem with real solutions they are bring in temperal measures aimed enriching themselves first amid economic crisis.

This is a sham being unveiled under PF. Fortunately this affects all of us including hyena judges.
