PF WARNS HH FOR ENDANGERING THE LIFE OF THE PRESIDENT IN MONGU – STATEMENT BY PF DEPUTY SECRETARY GENERAL MRS MUMBI PHIRI
Lusaka, 10th April, 2017 – We are warning Opposition UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema to desist from endangering the life of President Edgar Lungu following what happened in Mongu. The institution of Presidency is established and protected by the laws of Zambia and Hichilema has no option but to respect a creature of the highest laws of the land – the Constitution.
The PF wishes to commend His Excellency President Lungu that once again he demonstrated good judgement under extreme provocation in his capacity as Commander in Chief. PF has seen this quality in President Lungu from the painful moments when he handed over the instruments of power to Dr. Guy Scott even when the law was on his side but had to do that to preserve peace in the nation. It was one quality that saw him preside over a very painful transition in the nation following President Sata’s untimely death. While Hichilema thinks this attribute is a sign of weakness on the part of the President, Zambians know that is what makes him (President Lungu) a great leader.
As a matter of fact, when Hichilema thought he was posing a threat on President Lungu’s life, he placed his life and those of his overzealous followers in harm’s way. His childishness could have easily cost his life and that of other innocent citizens had security wings under the Commander in Chief not acted appropriately.
We have been reliably informed that the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and Republican President personally issued an order to restrain the police from bumping off the small opposition motorcade. This is because President Lungu attached a lot of significance to the Kuomboka Ceremony that he was not going to allow that there was no way he was going to throw it in disarray by playing into Hichilema’s evil scheme.
Besides holding Hichilema personally responsible for refusing to move out of the road as the law prescribes, PF wishes to call on the Police to investigate how it was possible for Hichilema to overstay on the road. This is because the President’s security cannot allow for such lapses. We make this call mindful that while President Lungu is PF Party President, he is also Republican President as he occupies the highest office in the land.
We wish to bring to the nation’s attention that it is not a secret that according to VVIP Protection orders the only other option, besides the one to restrain, was to disable the vessel and its occupants. That would have meant disabling the Hichilema’s vehicle and those of his followers including disabling everyone who occupied the said vehicles. This is what President Lungu’s good judgment prevented from happening otherwise we could have been talking of lost lives including those of the two unreasonable and bitter opposition leaders. That is the gravity attached to the Office of President as an institution and something Hichilema must reflect on seriously.
We ask Zambians of goodwill to dismiss Hichilema’s bitter politics because they are contaminating society. It is time that we confined him to the dustbins of political history. He must be warned however that he has embarked on a wrong path and soon and very soon, he will reap the consequences of his actions. President Lungu has continually stated that he does not believe in the shedding of blood. His hands will not be littered with blood of the foolish opposition leaders as would have been the case in Mongu.
