18 month infant drowns in a well in Katete District

An 18 month old baby infant has drowned after it accidently fell into a well in Katete district of Eastern province.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS today, Provincial Commissioner of Police Alex Chilufya said Samuel Banda Junior aged 18 months died after drowning in a well yesterday in Ibex compound.

Mr Chilufya said the infant’s father Samuel Banda 28 reported the incident to the police saying his child had drowned in a well at their neighbour’s house which is situated 30 meters from his house.

He said the incident happened between 08 and 09hrs.

Mr. Chilufya said the body of the deceased has since been retrieved and taken to St Francis Mission Hospital Mortuary awaiting burial.

The police commissioner has since appealed to members of the public in communities to ensure that open water wells are properly secured and covered to avoid similar accidental to re-occur.

iMr. Chilufya said this must be a safety issue which all households and community leaders ought to reinforce to protect the lives vulnerable children so as to prevent unnecessary loss of life.
