Chief Simamba of the Tonga speaking people in Siavonga District in Southern Province has denied Independent Councilor Smart Gwanda’s allegations that there is hunger in his chiefdom.

ZANIS reports that the traditional leader explained that there is enough food in his chiefdom to last up to the next year’s harvest time.

Chief Simamba said Simamba ward Independent Councilor Gwanda’s allegation that the people in his chiefdom are starving in need of relief food is not true because they had a good harvest during the last farming season.

The Chief also pointed out that the only challenge is the lack of clean drinking water as most boreholes in the area have dried up.

Chief Simamba said people are crowding to draw water from the remaining few boreholes and the situation is not good.

The Chief has however made a passionate appeal to government to speed up the process of fertilizer distribution and seed to farmers before the planting period.

Chief Simamba disclosed that up to now people in his area who will for the first time be part of the   e-voucher programme are still waiting for seed, fertilizer, and that  its late delivery may affect this year’s farming season.
