Elijah Tana backs Zambia for 2018 CHAN glory

Ex-Chipolopolo captain Elijah Tana is upbeat Zambia can win the 2018 CHAN in Morocco.

Zambia will face Sudan in the quarterfinals on Saturday night after winning Group B with seven points from three matches.

Tana, who led Zambia to a 3rd place finish at 2009 CHAN in Cote d’Ivoire, believes coach Wedson Nyirenda’s side has shown character to challenge for the trophy.

Zambia started the CHAN campaign with a 3-1 win over Rwanda before thumping Cote d’Ivoire 2-0 and wrapped up group stage action with a frustrating 1-1 draw against Namibia.

“It is good we have qualified to the quarterfinals. Let’s just support the boys up to the end. We will go to the final and win the cup. We need to believe in the boys,” the former Nchanga Rangers star said.

Tana is calling on fans to rally behind Chipolopolo.

“We should not say negative things about our team. That’s the future of our senior national team. Let’s motivate them through our support,” he said.

Zambia, who are making a third CHAN appearance, won bronze at the inaugural event in 2009 and reached the quarterfinal stage in 2016.

  1. We all want the team to lift the trophy but the coach should work on the mid field otherwise the game against Sudan could be the last one.
