Zambia has requested the South African Government to put precautionary health measures in place to ensure that all its food exports to Zambia are free from a food borne disease called Listeria.

Zambia’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Emmanuel Mwamba has written to the South African Department of International Relations and Corporation (DIRCO),to ensure that exports of vegetables and dairy products are well documented following an outbreak of the food borne disease in that country.

According to official statistics recently issued by South African Health Minister Aaron Matsoaledi, it indicates that 36 people have so far died from the disease and over 500 people are infected across the country.

Mr. Mwamba called on the relevant authorities in that country to put measures in place that would ensure that all food exports to Zambia are well documented in an effort to prevent the spread of the disease.

South Africa is Zambia’s second largest trade partner following a number of South African business entities operating in Zambia.

Listeria is a seriously bacterial food borne disease which has broken out in South Africa affecting people of different ages in many parts of that country.

This is contained in a statement made available to ZANIS in Lusaka today by First Secretary for Press and Public Relations, Naomi Nyawali.

  1. No need to warn them just ban them from exporting there food stuffs to Zambia for a while until the situation is stable.if there people are vulnerable who are we….

    • The corrupt theives running Zambia have no capacity to do anything , there is no corruption for them to gain from in doing that….

    • It is for Zambia to always put in measures and thoroughly inspect all food coming into the current….Emmanuel we can never guarantee and leave this in the hands of the exporter…you think they care more for the Zambians than to protect south African jobs?????? Be serious you just want to be seen to say something

  2. “Hoo shiit, Mukwita and Door are talking about food in Germany, I have to think of something…” Says Emmanuel. Those 2 will never stop ukulinganya ammapuli.

  3. You have it the wrong way around Mr High Commissioner. Does your country itself have the capacity to test for this bacteria? Let’s be serious. You cannot rely on them to ensure infected goods don’t cross our borders. You should be able to test everything for yourself at the border and ban if necessary.

  4. You should be ashamed of yourself that Zambia is importing vegetables from South Africa instead of growing our own .Last year Edgar was eating a mango and hinted to the nation that we are capable of growing our own mangos instead importing them from South Africa. What has happened since then ?When now hear from Mwamba that we could be importing infected vegetables form South Africa instead of growing our own.

This corrupt government of thieves need to go . The faster it goes the better because are simply hopeless .

    • You need to go to Chainama too, to have your head checked. Besides, why don’t you join the vegetable growers and be a supplier, instead of posting nonsensical comments.

  6. Finally , finally doing his real job as an ambassador should do, looking after the interests of Zambia ..not selling out the country to racists infestors on how rip off Zambians with their inferior products.

This is a welcome change. This guy thinks Zambians are inferior and undersells the country to South African infesters

  7. Did the learned ambassador research the source of listeria before he made his statement. Google listeria and read the sources of listeria, one of the main ones is poultry which the ambassador doesnt wven mention.
Vegetables are not on list of high risk foods and itsuggests that you wash vegetables before you eat, which we shoukd do anyway. Cold meats and shellfish are other sources of listeria.
Ambassador we have an educational tool called internet, use it to educate zambians not alarm them
Havs anyone else noticed that the words, warn, warns and caution, are now commonplace innstatements from government an pf organs…why

  8. Quality Control on the Zambian dude should be doing that before any food imports hit our markets. Why trust them and what guarantee do you have, their word?
