The Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority says intensive customer acquisition campaigns by MTN Zambia, Airtel Zambia and Zamtel have pushed the telecom market towards saturation point.

Recent statistics released by the regulator suggests that the country, with a population of 16 million, is home to 13.4 million subscribers, representing a penetration rate of 81.92 percent.

MTN Zambia leads the market with approximately 6 million subscribers, followed by Airtel Zambia with 5 million and Zamtel with just over 2.2 million customers.

The number of mobile internet users in the country has increased to 7.7 million from 7.1 million, representing a 47.08 percent penetrate rate.

Operators have reduced the cost of data bundles by over 70 percent and this is understood to have fuelled the increase in users. Customers in Zambia can now buy 5 GB data bundles for ZMK 100.

Competition for business within voice and data services is expected to increase with the introduction of the country’s fourth operator, Uzi Zambia.

ZICTA Support Services Director Mofya Chisala said the company is expected to be fully operational before year-end, and intends to install universal access sites in unserved and under-served areas.

Mr. Chisala said the Authority is looking to secure 100 percent national connectivity coverage through Uzi Zambia.

    • Is this saturation on subscriber end or market player end ? The penetration of users is often questionable ZICTA should now clean up this data and give us unique users now that they have user data with unique NRC details they should be able to give much more valid data unlike this +80% penetration. Most people are on more than one Network and some even 3 subscriptions on a single network. CLEAN UP DATA PLEASE

  1. Which ethical and intellectual attitude will they engage for them to take the lead?

  2. Competition is great for the end user. The consumer gets the benefit. Ati saturation kikikiki.

  3. So funny….
But network is slow in rural areas ( just speaking on behalf of the people) 🙁

  4. Can you stop loving money and stop been corrupted. Just give Vodafone a license. What are we going to benefit from a 10 year history company? Or Santos stories we hear. .. . Uzi needs to start perfectly if they want to win hearts of Zambia people
