Zimbabwe end Zambia’s COSAFA U20 final dreams

Share

Zambia Under-20 tumbled at the semifinal stage of the 2018 COSAFA U20 Cup following a 2-1 loss to Zimbabwe at Nkana Stadium in Kitwe.

The 11-time champions’ defensive frailties that Mozambique exposed in the final Group A match that ended 1-1 on December 8 returned to haunt the tournament hosts again on Tuesday.

Charles Bwale’s team went ahead in the 36th minute but two minutes later goalkeeper Bradley Mweene and his defenders found themselves in communication crosswires and Zimbabwe defender Andrew Mbebe punished them for that when he headed-in the equalizer.

Zambia then huffed and puffed their way throughout the second half and Zimbabwe then deservedly took the lead in the 71st minute when Delic Murimba beat Mweene as the hosts’ attack continued to offer very little quality or bite for that matter.

Meanwhile, Zambia will face Angola in the 3rd and 4th place playoff on Thursday.

Zimbabwe will play defending champions South Africa in the final later on the same day after the latter beat Angola 1-0 in Tuesday’s early kickoff.

    • Zambian soccer standards continue to nosedive while the rest of the region keeps upping theirs. And southern Rhodesia in particular appears to have found an antidote for Zambian soccer at ALL levels of the game. Kudala we used to get ANGRY for losing to any team south of the equator, but now it’s become a norm. Very shameful!!!!!!!

  1. The result just sums up the current catastrophe in the nations youth structures. Let us not start a blame game, the bottom line is that the nations youth structures are in a mess.
This goes to explain why the senior team is failing to perform, Their performance is a direct revelation of the state of the youth structures. Countries like Swaziland, Mozambique have now caught up with us while South Africa and Zimbabwe have surpassed us. So far the under 20 sides her in Botswana for the region 5 games are performing poorly.
FAZ must urgently review the performance of both the women and men’s national team’s performance..We need an urgent intervention to spur the restructuring of the national youth academies to catch up with South A Africa.

  2. Even the coach is to blame, Sven told to work on the team and he kept saying he knew what he was doing, NI CHISESA CHITONTOLI. nayaaa inee

  4. Katana, our problem is not stractures but administration and leadership. We have everything except direction. Even the selection of coaches is suspicious. We overlook people like Chris Katongo, Beston Chambeshi, Honour Janza for the likes of Chintu Kampamba! Whats special about him? He leads prayers instead of strategies after private prayers. So when our lads pray on the pitch and we lose who wins, satana? God is bigger than prayers for economies and soccer. He has give us brains to use. When ask our excellency show it will the time to tell people we are a Christian Nation. All else is from satana. The first Christians were called so after people saw their Christlikeness NOT vabupuba.
