UNZA defends Dr Mushimba’s PhD

Share

The University of Zambia has released details of Transport and Communications Minister Brian Mushimba’s academic records after it awarded him with a PhD in Engineering on Monday.

Some quarters have raised doubts over the authenticity of Dr Mushimba’s doctorate with some insinuating that it was bought off.

Some even when further to ask how many years has Dr Mushimba spent in Zambia to manage to obtain a doctorate.

“When did he arrive in Zambia from USA where he had lived for many years shortly before 2016 election and which year did he register to Study PhD Engineering research programme at UNZA. Show me the form he filled in at Unza,” other’s queried on social media.

“How long does it take for One to Complete his PhD programme in Engineering at UNZA. Who supervised Honourable Mushimba in this PhD and where is the Thesis for Honourable Mushimba?”

But the UNZA Public Relations Office has released details of Dr Mushimba’s academic journey which shows that he had been studying with UNZA for some years until recently when he successfully defended his Thesis.

UNZA says Dr Mushimba’s Thesis was titled “Coal Substitution Obscurity in Cement Manufacturing In Zambia. Potential for Viable Waste Energy Conversion.”

It said, Engineer Mushimba was born in Mufurila on 7th November 1974 and completed primary education at Makole Primary School in Mufulira.

He then proceeded to Mpelembe Secondary in Kitwe where he completed Grade 12 (o levels) in 1993.

Upon successfully completing grade 12, Zambia consolidated copper mines (ZCCM) awarded him the much-coveted academic scholarship to do form 6 (A levels).

It said upon completion of form 6 A levels, he was admitted to the University of Arizona in the United States of America (USA) where he studied and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree of Science in Mining Engineering.

While in the USA, Dr Mushimba earned a master’s degree in Business Administration
with a concentration in engineering management and another masters degree in Business Administration in International Business Management from Salem University in West Virginia.

As an Engineer, Dr. Mushimba worked at Siemens power generation in Atlanta, Georgia for seven years as a commissioning lead engineer on various power generation projects and he was credited in having added approximately 10,000 megawatts of new generation capacity onto the USA national power grid.

Later, Dr. Mushimba joined Lafarge North America as an Engineering manager in Atlanta and served for four years before transferring to Lafarge Cement in Zambia in the same capacity where he served a further three years.

In 2012, he accepted an offer to work for Eskom in South Africa and served as a Technical Director in their Ugandan subsidiary until 2016 when he decided to serve the people of Kankoyo Constituency as Member of Parliament and he was subsequently appointed a Minister of Transport and Communication the position he currently holds.

    • Cute and smart. I understand ama jealousy from the Delusionals. I thought it was only women who are jealous of each other but boy was I wrong.

    • So even UNZA is infested with idyots!?
So the PHD is honorary degree!?
      Honorary for surviving an accident??
      Honorary smashing government vehicles?

    • Where are the details released by UNZA? No details of his enrolment amounts to shielding him. Publish his PhD journey at UNZA not talking about his experience and studies obtained in America it makes no sense

    • “Coal Substitution Obscurity in Cement Manufacturing In Zambia. Potential for Viable Waste Energy Conversion.”

Really laughable….no wonder this clown wants national airline back with such retrogressive mindset..even his thesis is dated.

    • KK told everybody to stop calling each other DR.
I now have 7 PhD holders in my extended family, all obtained in last 10 years.
1 is still a primary school teacher in Luapula. Dr.

    • What pains me some of these fooooools applauding this clown Brian can not see that today in Zambia …a poor child who aspires to be a doctor can not achieve that dream because selfish foooooools like Brian and PF have put a price on education.
Meanwhile this clown can go to UNZA study and cheat his way on taxpayers time whilst being a minister and he can also drink and drive if he has an accident can be flown to a luxury hospital at taxpayers expense to relax there for 4 weeks even if its a bruised arm.

    • Look at the bandage on that arm..he is not even wearing his arm support..do you think someone who broke his arm 4 weeks ago could be stretching their arm at 180 like that!!

    • There is no where where it says 1. when he enrolled at UNZA 2. How long it took him 3. Was he full time or part-time or distance 4. Who were his supervisors. All UNZA has done is cut and paste an extract from his CV. We are not intrested in his CV but in evidence that he truly completed his PhD in a way customary to the UNZA journey to obtaining one

    • The man has the qualifications and background to deserve an Honorary PhD in Engineering. I think this is one PhD that is deserving.

    • “UNZA Public Relations Office has released details of Dr Mushimba’s academic journey which shows that he had been studying with UNZA for some years until recently when he successfully defended his Thesis.”

There is nothing concrete here…why can’t UNZA issue these dates say Brian enrolled on x day of this month in 20XX and he defended it on X date.

    • Why can’t you show us your achievements gay jay?? Feeling bad that Brian spent years in diaspora and achieved a lot while you end up being a troll??? No wonder the libido is low….kwekwekwekwe…

    • The issue here isn’t about Jay.South why should he show us his education record.
Secondly this guy is a public figure who is paid by tax payers money.
Thirdly he claimed to have paid for his medical bills in SA but when challenged to produce proof he failed to do so.
In my humble opinion he s a definition of fake news .

    • Zambian Citizen – Why should I show my educational background here? am I studying on taxpayers time? Am I a minster or a Public official…where you are talking there you can not even afford to pay for your child if s/he wanted to study medicine or do a PHD

  1. I dont doubt this PhD. This media post doesnt save anything. It doesnt answer questions directly attributed to UNZA.

    • Some foooools believe such drivel…this is the era we are in even institutions like UNZA have been infiltrated with cadres.

  2. I wanted to know when he got enrolled at UNZA to start his PhD. I thought that was the question the spokes person needed to tell us. All those rantings on his primary, secondary and first degree is secondary to the question at hand. When did he enroll for his PhD? Otherwise congratulations Dr.

  3. The response does not say anything directly in relation to his PHD. Did they award him the PHD on account of his prior experience?

    • There no such thing it’s not like he was in academia…I just can’t see where this chap got the time to do it not even a Master’s can be done in that duration whilst working and travelling about. You will hear that some smart kid did it for him.

  4. Just is this. Even UNZA cannot answer simple questions. So many questions still hanging… I f this is honorary degree he still deserves it.

    • as a part time PHD student one needs atleast 6yrs to finish and 3 yrs for full time in engineering,so unza should provide the dates enrolled and his transcript or maybe like dr malama those are confidential hahaha

  5. Way to go minister. Practical experience in industry is what qualifies people for leadership positions. Bottom-line is that it is not just academic experience (which Zambians think is prerequisite for leadership) but industrial operation. More power to you Dr. Mushimba. You earned your title the old way by earning it.

  6. This kind of journalism is nothing less than absurdity. THE QUESTIONS ARE SIMPLE: WHEN DID HE ENROL FOR PHD @ UNZA? WHO SUPERVISED HIM? HOW LONG DOES A PHD PROG TAKE AT UNZA? WHICH FORM DID HE SIGN?

THESE QUESTIONS HAVE NOT BEEN ANSWERED SIR OR MADAM…. PLZ GO BACK & ASK UNZA PR AGAIN ….

  7. Wait even HH will be awarded DR of honors from lusangu and eden university so don’t worry ba UPND.
Just for a little while (2022) , HH will be politically impotent.

    • @ Mr. P.
This is the kind of thinking which is retrogressive & uncouth. How do you link purely an academic question to politics? Wake up!! Do you eat politics?

    • Chama Chime – Dont mind this blogger Mr. P he is that utterly childish attention-seeking troll of a knobhead who is on LT who is infatuated with tribalism

    • You just do not know Brian, ala ninshimbi iyi mwana!
Just because he is in politics now does not take away the genius in him.
Unless of course you have no idea what it meant to come from a govt school and be selected to Mpelembe, proceed to Form Six, and get a scholarship to the US.
      Mulesalula abena kambwili abobene mwabelesha…

  8. We know how qualitable the education at UNZA is.No one can just wake up and find a UNZA paper in his hands without sweating. Let’s give credit to him for such an achievement.A challenge to the doubting Thomases is that if you doubt the credibility of his paper, then UNZA is still there go there to confirm if such a thing can happen.

  9. “As an Engineer, Dr. Mushimba worked at Siemens power generation in Atlanta, Georgia for seven years as a commissioning lead engineer on various power generation projects and he was credited in having added approximately 10,000 megawatts of new generation capacity onto the USA national power grid”.

Lol. This says it all. What a buck of liars.

  10. As a public official, let Brian upload on his Facebook page the pages showing his thesis title and one showing his supervisor n examiners. PhD is record time while serving as MP and minister. Questions are in order.

  11. Very disappointing statement by UNZA. They are actually doing a disservice to Dr Mushimba. All they have answered are his academic and work history, i.e. probably the basis of his admission to PhD? Did he enrol in 2016 or when he was working for Lafarge in Zambia?
But I think it is not UNZA, it’s probably the reporting of the journalist of LT, these chaps are a nuisance now! Look at tgem at Prime TV, kwati they are trained at a community school in Kanyama! Now the trib.als are given space, just look at the resurrection of trib.al Jay Gay.

  12. Sorry trib.als, this is an earned PhD, not like the nons.ense from Opposition Trib.al Alliance member, consultant and soon to be appointed vice running mate to trib.al Hacks…. kikikikikikkkiiiii …these trib.als!!!!!!

  13. Is anyone as surprised as I am that he hasn’t contributed anything to this nation other that becoming an MP?

  14. That degree means that Dr Mushimba will not be in grease or oil.But behind a desk. These people get their fancy degrees. Then falsely believe that poor people are dam fools.Peter Carlos Hinds.

  15. There are those who are going around saying. That whites must live.Because if all whites die.Black people will suffer.”God save the queen”.Peter Carlos Hinds.

  16. Comments section littered with a bunch of illiterates. Jealous losers who have achieved nothing except the ability to type vindictive posts in poorly constructed English. Carry on losing while others keep on winning. some fool will even go as far attack someone’s looks. Our country has too many malcontents. Congratulations Dr. Mushimba.

  17. This is poor reporting by LT.Even UNZA’s PR team did a very bad job.if Hon.Brian Mushimba returned into Zambia in 2016 then stood as PF MP in Kankoyo and entered UNZA the same year, that would mean he studied for his PHD from 2016 to 2018(which is two years). So now,how long does it take to get a PHD at UNZA?is it two years or 4 yrs?I KNOW VERY WELL THAT ONE WOULD GET A MASTERS DEGREE FROM UNZA AFTER STUDYING THERE FOR TWO YEARS.so what about a PHD?Yes,Hon.Mushimba’s CV is rich and he is a very learned minister but getting a PHD from UNZA within two years leaves so many questions unanswered.LET UNZA EXPLAIN WELL ON THIS MATTER BEFORE IT TARNISHES ITS SPLENDID IMAGE!!!Zambians have to much respect for UNZA graduates,so please do not allow the Mushimba’s PHD issue destroy UNZA’s good…

  18. Tried to check for his work online but nothing really comes up except the documents from the ministry bearing his name by virtue of him signing on them. PhD defense should not be done in secret people, it should be public so the public can ask questions and witness to avoid such speculations. Howerver, there is defintely something fishy about this issue and if he indeed been studying towards his PhD, we should be able to find his thesis somewhere, but I guess it is only being held at UNZA and we have no chance to access it. Educational matters must be transparent and available for others to see, read and cite. Looking forward to reading the thesis :D!

  19. If your PhD cannot get you a professor or researcher position it is either it is fake or got it without proper processes. If your PhD is such a problem and questionable as this guy’s, please call yourself something, not Doc. We don’t put Dr. in front of our names, PhD after the name. So, ba Mushimba amasambililo yabo yabwafya. Pambi yabufi.

  20. RIDICULOUS! This statement was written by Mushimba’s spins. How would UNZA know all these details from his primary school education, including who sponsored to go to school, where he worked etc. UNZA doesn’t ask for all these details as part of enrollment. This sounds like justifying an Honorary degree. SHAME

  21. There’s no PhD at UNZA. Ask to read their dissertations. Crap at its worst. It is trash and unreadable. Only a fuuuul can get a “PhD” at UNZA. Mushimba was afraid of real PhDs from real universities in the US.

  22. UNZA can’t answer questions and here is how he bought his PhD, obviously he was not studying at UNZA when he was in the USA.
“I have received requests to share my PhD research interest that I pursued the last 6 to 7 years at UNZA. I have attached my abstract here. I think we can have a conversation around commercialization of “common garbage” in this waste-to-energy (WtE) research I have concluded.”

  23. It will be helpful for Unza’s Directorate of Research & Postgraduate Studies to state (1) when Dr. Mushimba was admitted to a doctorate program; (2) Which branch of Engineering (Civil, Electrical, Mechanical) the study was administered; (3) Name of his Supervisor; (4) date of Viva (defence of Thesis); and (5) name of External Examiner & University. Answers into these lines by the Registrar will clear Unza’s academic integrity.

  24. Sorry, in Zambia the haters will only accept doctorates awarded to such as Kambwili and Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba. Since when has Unza ” given “” degrees on fake premise? If Brian got this PhD “freely” and did not earn it then we must assume that almost everyone from Unza did the same. But I know that in spite the numerous closures Unza is one of the most HONEST universities in the world.

  25. You see there are many people with PhD. PhD can be earned in many ways. PhD is academic qualification. Anyone who decides to pursue PhD can do it. For example, one can have a PhD in electrical Engineering in Canada, if that person has not done Engineering-in-Training for a minimal of at least 4 years, cannot be called professional engineer and cannot practice engineering. The first degree is the tool used to assess if you qualify to enter Engineer In Training. If one done not meet the qualification, extra courses are assigned. Some people have earned PhD and some have honorary PhD. What matters is what you can do with your PhD? Unfortunately, many people with PhD in Zambia are paid for having a paper, not what they can produce. Having a PhD does not mean you’re smart, but you have earned…

  26. Ine mutima ku baba, where are the amswers to the questions pipo have beem asking? This is why IBA,ale mipokela ama licence, what kind of WRITERS are these.Umu tima ubukali ine!

  27. That statement is not from UNZA PR, its a post from smart eagles, a Facebook page by Amos, Antonio and Sunday. The headline is wrong.

  28. He has a better CV than some party’s god who the best he can boost of Unza and Privatization thieving. No one across the fence has a problem calling GBM and Kambwili Dr.

    • In addition he’s not a grade 6 or form 5 failure who has to buy a degree on line. Brian had brilliant results at form 5. The problem with people is that to them anyone in government is perceived as an enemy. Brian first and foremost is a human being who is entitled to life. Bu minister is just one of those things we meet in life.

  29. Abena mufulira you set a record. Mulibakali academically jelousy down, i remember during university times peopl got interested in mufulira town because of there academic records but nefyabupuba saana. Congrats

  30. UNZA got so defensive they forgot to answer the simple question: adacita enrol liti into PhD imene iyi? Is it too much to ask? Ba cimbwi alibe m’cila!!

  31. At #32 , “SEE” above.
In Zambia, like Nigeria many years ago ( but not anymore), once you “earn” your Phd ( and this is commendable), thereafter you ” EARN” from your Phd by just parading it in front of your name like an adjective.

  32. Indeed, the questions have not been adequately addressed. Yankhani mafuso ameneyo ndipo mudzamasulidwa bwana!!!! Osati Kumanjelebeta cabe.

  33. Lest we forget, Mpelembe High School was built specifically by the Unip led Government of KK to, train indigenous, gifted children of Zambia to return home and build industry. Alas many of those kids now flipping burgers in the US, UK etc. upon completion never returned home. Because of the privileged free education they got at times from prestigious University they stayed on got job but not anything equal to how they would have fared at ZCCM. Hence a program meant to better and profit Zambia ended up profiting others…..

  34. His credentials are good. Mpelembe Secondary School was very brilliant students then I don’t know now. But the only disservice UNZA has don to this seeming deserving student is fail to answer the question. This suspicion could even be coming from within UNZA. Please ba UNZA help the man by answering the questions.
Mean while I will find it difficult to congratulate you now until UNZA clears the air.

  35. The honorable minister is just a genius, stop your jealous attitude towards noble and hard working people. Congratulations honorable.

  36. LT could have done better not writing this article because they have NOT told us anything concerning the questions at hand!! NO ONE WAS QUESTIONING his previous academic records BUT HOW HE GOT HIS PhD at UNZA! Please show us, how and we shall be happy!! YES SOME ONE WITH SUCH AN ACADEMIC and PROFESSIONAL PROWESS CANNOT FAIL TO GET A PhD but people you know….people JUST WANT TO BE SURE!!

  37. TWALIMWEBELE BA LUSAKA THAT BA MUFULIRA TWALIKABA. SHAME SHAME THE GUY IS A GENIUS. I WAS WITH HIM IN MUFULIRA

  38. If only PhDs could be conferred on the basis of how many fellow citizens one has employed, then I would be eager to want one!
For now, I have to shelve mine! What makes sense to me now is job creation and privately sponsoring deserving students who have been denied scholarships by our cruel bursaries system!
