The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has refuted reports that electricity tariffs have been increased by 200%

ERB Executive Director Langiwe Lungu has said that the average of the entire adjustment is 113%.

Ms. Lungu said that the increment is for all categories of customers which are residential, commercial, social and maximum demand.

She says the increment has been effected after intense and extensive consultations with stakeholders.

Ms. Lungu said that the board held public hearings, consulted with the government whose policy is to move towards cost-reflective tariffs.

She further explained that the adjustment is also meant to ensure that ZESCO remains commercially viable because it buys power from Independent Power Producers such as Maamba collieries and Coppeberlt Energy Corporation at a higher price and sells at a less price.

Ms. Lungu was speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka yesterday.

Meanwhile, ERB Director Economic and Regulation Alfred Mwila said under the new tariffs for residential use the line tariff has been reduced to one hundred units.

And, Mr. Mwila said the increment in fuel prices is to ensure that there is no shortfall in meeting obligations to the suppliers because the price is determined based on how much the cargo was purchased at.

He said the appreciation of the kwacha was at the end of the circle in the procurement process.

    • This has a disgraceful name. Lungu. She should remarry and change name.
That name Lungu is shameful. Ester LUNGU Police Station?? Who the fvck thought of that?

    • Imwe Bangwele, you justifying increment based on public consultations! The ZESCO operation cost is ridiculously bloated and you have refused to address this issue.
ERB, IDC, ministry of religion are conduits for corruption should be reduced to their original government units or departments. The savings can go to subsidizing ZESCO operation costs for lower tarrifs and fuel cargo for lower pump price. labbish ka economist Mwila by the book, labbish!

    • I hate to talk about tribal, but Lungu’s appointments mwandi leaves too much to be desired; Lungu, Mwila, Mulenga, Zimba, Mwila etc. Country men other names can’t qualify on merit?

    • In Bandit President Lungu government workers are never pictured in their offices…just airports and company dinners like above and in Lodges hosting adultery conferences

    • Dull and useless, is 113% Normal and Logical? Price is determined based on how much the Cargo was Purchased? Very stupid statement Madam. Just say your whole entire team has no strategic plan on how we can bring costs down. Because you are all stealing and benefiting. We do not need ERB it should be closed.

  1. Nonsense!! Who told u that 113% increment is normal? U can only find such increments in failed states. Your fuel and oils procurement system is riddled with a lot of kickbacks thereby making the final product very expensive. U are yet to give an account of the where-about of the cheap Saudi Arabian oil. On Zesco, u replaced British made turbines with Chinese ones hence usage of so much water. Now u are making Kariba dam dry. U have killed this country. What is this nonsense of cost reflective u are talking about! Please manage costs by reducing on Labour force, cut down on board allowances, personal to holder vehicles where there is too much fuel being wasted, etc.

  2. Look at this PF b.itch talking as if price increases of 100% are good enough and affordable. Where do they get such cadre monkeys that have shame in justifying such abominations to the public.
You announce a 100% increase to someone that is not working in that rubbish Zambian economy, where do you think that person will get the 100% kwacha cover for that unjustified increase that goes to cover money Lungu stole from the Eurobonds?

  3. epo wabombele Sonta poooooo……..

We were telling you people lungu is useless , you were saying we are bitter……

Now look what has befallen the nation ?

The effects of massive deforestation for malasha will devastate Zambia while lungu is more intrested in building a massive church for national prayers using ZNS and army ???
Instead of using the same personal to plant trees country wide ….

  4. It seems this woman does not understand the law of “averages”. What it means is that some customers are going to get a higher increase than others. So, I am not surprised to hear some customers will get 200% increase.

    • I doubt she’s good at maths. She’s reporting an average in which is hidden figures of the actual upper increment (200%) and lower increment…
      And she’s a CEO.

  5. Let me get this correct: …” because it buys power from Independent Power Producers such as Maamba collieries and Copperbelt Energy Corporation at a higher price and sells at a less price.” Who does that???? Is this not another form of madness???? People we are in trouble there is a serious leadership crisis in Zambia. Why did she say this???
She mentions on average its 113% admitting that others will be paying more than 200%. Simple maths the average of 2, 4, 2, 6, 8 is 4 and not 2 as she wants us to understand. This is complete madnes.s of the worst form…
    Disaster!!!!

    • its zesco which said 200% then to come up with113% so people say 113 better then 200.They are playing on peoples mind so that we accept 113%.

  7. Last time i checked, CEC was buying power from ZESCO. and not the other way round as the lady puts it. CEC does not produce enough power to make a difference on the supply market; 1MW from solar at CBU farm and some equally small amount from Kabompo hydro if they have even commissioned yet. CEC owns most of the transmission infrastructure which ZESCO uses. So on a barter kind of arrangement they get power from ZESCO which they sell to the mines for a profit. So the impression that ZESCO must increase tariffs bacause they buy power from IPPs like CEC is not correct. More plausible if you say the government needs money to pay off some debts, regardless. However, govt should not be suprised if these increases come to bite them come election time. 2021 is just around the corner and we are…

  8. Working government is doing a recommendable job, thanks of for putting more money in the people’s pockets. 2021 ni nafuti nafuti.

  9. so if Zesco buys power from these other small electricity generating companies why not just decentralize power distribution by allowing other electricity generating companies supply power to the zambian market? it makes no sense that zesco has to buy from mamba or CEC in order to resupply that power. What Zesco can do is sell part of the power lines installed already by ZESCO in locations where these companies that generate electricity are so that those companies can assume the responsibility to supply power. in so doing Zesco can cut on costs and manage to supply what it can currently manage thereby freeing some money for expansion programs. Zambia doesn’t just need one electricity grid to connect to let there be many so that this charade of load-shedding never repeats itself again…

    • contd: what sense is there in buying power from Mamba at k10 per watt then sell that same power at k8 per watt to the nation? or buy at K10 then after this increment sell at k12 for already overburdened people instead of allowing mamba supply that power for k11 if they consider distribution costs and that will help people save k1 and enjoy good uninterrupted electricity supply. list ZESCO on LUSE as a Public company too, why still keep it as a parastatal, this will ensure ZESCO evolves and raise much needed capital. Government keeps this loss making, money sucking parastatal because is their cash cow and cader dump yard.

  10. This woman’s eyes tell a different story. As the saying goes, the eyes don’t lie. How many times have you hiked the tariffs but never resolve the load shedding issue? Why are these people given the responsibility they have if the incentive is to rip people off? Are we ever going to get a patriot with common sense who will one day resolve this energy issue once and for all? Our mentality needs to change. We all want to live decent lives so let’s compete to make our country better rather than destroy the little resources we have.

  11. LANGIWE THINKS 113% INCREASE IS SMALL? WHICH STAKEHOLDER WAS CONSULTED? IS IT LUNGU AND THE PF? IS MAAMBA OR CEC A FOREIGN ENTITY THAT BUYING ELECTRICITY FROM THEM SOUNDS AS IF IT IS AN IMPORTED COMMODITY? WHY IS THE PF IN THE HABIT OF EXAGGERATING THE COST OF ANYTHING THEY BUY? IN ORDER TO STEAL THE DIFFERENCE? REMEMBER FIRE TENDERS AT U$1 000 000 EACH? THE AMBULANCES AT U$288 000 EACH? K K GAVE ZAMBIANS COUPONS FOR MEALIE MEAL WHICH WAS A SIGN OF SOLIDARITY WITHE SUFFERING MASSES.
THE PF HAS FAILED TO BRING REAL DEVELOPMENT TO ZAMBIA.

  12. 100 Zkw was giving you 239 units of power, if you power in the next month for the first time, come 1st January,2020, 213 Zkw will be getting 139 units of power. For residential customers, the unit tariff has been reduced by 100 units. Wanyeka Munzi.
