Chilanga Member of Parliament Maria Langa has appealed to leaders to accommodate and engage senior citizens through dialogue and not violence.
Ms. Langa says opposition political party leaders, who aspire to lead the country one day, must be welcoming to all kinds of people.
Ms. Langa was speaking when she visited the house of Mirriam Kasoleka who was allegedly attacked by the UPND at the residence of party leader Hakainde Hichilema.
Ms. Langa, who condemned the attack, said people with disabilities who visited the opposition leader’s house were merely taking a petition in a peaceful manner and did not deserve to be attacked.
She said Bill 10 seeks to address the unfortunate incidents that people living with disabilities face that needs to be supported by all well-meaning Zambians.
And Zambia Agency for Persons with Disabilities – ZAPD Treasurer Sanny Zaranyika, who was part of the entourage that went to present a petition to Mr. Hakainde’s residence, said he was shocked by the opposition leader who did not give them an opportunity to be heard but instead attacked them.
Meanwhile, Mirriam Kasoleka’s Neighbor Joyce Phiri, who was also part of the entourage said the opposition leader was expected to welcome the elderly women to hear their views but were shocked by the reception.
Madam, we have covid 19 now. Also kwacha is sprinting to 20 kwacha, inflation figures are competing with appollo 11 going to the moon, we don’t have reserves any more, jobs are non existence for our youths, and all you can focus on is an opposition political party. Get your facts right madam and stop peddling lies! You should be condemning those who were trying to use the disabled to support Bill 10! Our Current Constitution already provided for the disabled, youths and women! The question is: Of the 8 nominations a president is allowed to make, how many disabled people were nominated and are serving in the current cabinet? If we can’t follow the law as it is, what makes people think we can follow Bill 10 when it’s law? Moreover, we should all condemn people who want to sink so low to take dirty politics to someone’s house! That was CRIMINAL TRESPASS for which they should have been locked up, disabled or not! Disability is no license to commit crime! Grow up!

The Disabled went to protest at state house last year and were savagely beaten, dragged around and hounded out of statehouse. There was no out cry from some sections of the members of the public except UPND. The Disabled should have gone to Chawama house fro president Lungu who is head state of the nation to present their petition. Going to a private house of a leader of a political party will not yield any results other than being hounded out of premises. PF to blame for all the suffering of the disabled people in Zambia.
These are the MPs who vote themselves out of Parliament. As a Lawmaker, you should know that that provision in Bill 10 is redundant because the current Constitution already provides for the disabled, the youths and women. It’s one thing to have the Law but you need morals to follow the Rules of Law. It’s worrying that we have MPs who are too ignorant of the Law of the Land. It would be prudent to upgrade the qualifications for one to stand as MP. At least a Law degree should be the minimum qualification for MP. Grade 12 dropouts don’t know the Law and are easily bought!
