The recruitment of additional medical staff as directed by President Edgar Lungu has not started

Share

Social Scientist Innocent Kolala says it is disappointing that the recruitment of medical staff as directed by President Edgar Lungu is delaying while positive cases of the coronavirus are rising in the Country from only 2 on 18th March, to more than 60 cases on 19th April 2020.

About three weeks ago, the Zambian Government through the Ministry of Health announced the planned recruitment of 400 medical doctors and 3000 other health workers to scale up the fight against Coronavirus Disease.

Mr. Kolala said the services of health workers are needed more, now than ever before to help fight this pandemic which has devastated millions of people across the globe.

He said there is need for vigorous screening and testing especially in border areas and the people to do this are health workers, so the delay to recruit is creating a disaster, bearing in mind that borders are crucial entry points for diseases such as COVID-19 and if not properly managed would affect the Country significantly.

Mr Kolala has appealed to bureaucrats in charge of these recruitments to speed up the process or risk being reactive because the COVID-19 has potential of escalating to uncontrollable levels as witnessed in some Countries.

He noted that President Edgar Lungu has shown leadership by directing the employment of more health workers especially during the coronavirus disease fight, and through the hardworking Minister of Health Dr. Chitalu Chilufya as well as other cabinet Ministers, it is expected that implementation is given the attention it requires.

He said those responsible for ensuring that the Presidential directive is actualized to quickly do so.

Mr Kolala said the addition of only 3400 health workers is, however, not enough for the Zambian health sector which has been facing human resource shortages for a long time thereby straining existing personnel with unprecedented work overloads and abnormal hours of working.

He said with the way coronavirus cases are rising in the Country, the Government should consider adjusting upwards the numbers of health workers to be employed as the recruitment exercise progresses.

He said the health sector is a critical one because it involves life, and a healthy citizenry is among major ways of enhancing productivity for a sustainable economy.

  1. Interesting picture indeed. The President is preaching Social Distancing and wearing of masks but none this is observed in the picture. The President himself is in close contact with people who are potential vectors of the Coronavirus hence endangering his health. This is the time when Bowman Lusambo was supposed to crack his whip.
The two nurses are even holding hands, the habit that Dr. Chilufya is discouraging.

  2. well i for one am not disappointed i already know how the current government works , its always planning to do something but never does our humble president said chibolya will go after A trip to Dubai yet nothing has been done, minister mwale said city market market will be rebuilt after three months when the fire gutted the place its been 4 years now, same mwale said bridge in lundazi will be made safe in 14 days after it was partially washed away that never happened and 9 people perished in A vehicle and he wasnt held accountable, those are just but A few observations list is endless

  3. Full of lies and pipe dreams.

The order of the day is ……..

lies , borrow money , steal , brutalise any critics , steal some more , put on some stants like garbage collection, go back and start the cycle again…

  4. More lies just like the famous PF lie of “more money in your pockets in 90 days” back in 2011 . Next lie please?

  5. It’s easy to talk but actions matters.
As this virus spreading too fast,as a government try to be fast in reacting over fighting it,all else Zambia will be called by it’s name but empty without people.
    This virus is too quick.

  6. A normal person would realise that such recruitment don’t take overnight. It is a lie to say no medical staff have been recruited since the presidents announcement because they have. You can’t expect us to recruit the whole day 3000 staff in one day. We need to ensure these people fit the criteria and pass background checks. These are people who will be dealing with vulnerable members of society. Some of you are just dull

    • It is an open secrete that and Zambians know this .It takes a few weeks to recruit relatives of PF leaders to foreign Zambian missions some of whom are not even qualified for the jobs they are sent to do .A medical staff is taking months to join the field after spending seven years training . To add salt to an injury ,they will not even be on payroll till the mansions built near state house have finished using tax payers money .
These PF guys are worse than covid- 19 to put it mildly .

  12. The country is broke and has no money to pay additional medical health workers. They will just employ the additional 400 but obviously the list is being edited to put his favored tribesmen and women. That’s Lungu for you.

  13. @ The first comment, that clearly an old picture, ECL is deeply practicing social isolatio to the maximum, no one sees him, even his video addresses are done in isolation, away from a live audience.

  14. Y’all are running ahead of yourselves. Look here, you were told that the highly paid GRZ workers would have the values of theirs paychecks decapitated by 20%. Has that kicked in yet? If not, how can you reasonably expect the much later pronouncement to precede the former? Go figure.
