Armed Police search UPND Secretariat, arrest Anthony Bwalya

Share

Armed Police officers this afternoon surrounded the UPND Secretariat in Lusaka and conducted a search at the premises in search of what they termed as fake National Registration cards.

Police officers went to the secretariat to conduct a search as a result of a call out which was issued to UPND media team member Anthony Bwalya.

By the time of publishing, Mr Bwalya was being driven to Kabwata Police for processing of his arrest.

Zambia Police Acting spokesperson Danny Mwale confirmed the presence of Police Officers at the UPND Secretariat.

The battalion which arrived at 12:00 Hrs only gained entrance to the UPND offices at 14:30 Hrs after the arrival of Counsel Marshal Mucheende of M and Associates who validated the search warrant.

Under the watchful eye of the legal team, the searching police officers under went a vigorous body search to ensure that they were not carrying any of the fake NRC documents to be planted in the premises.

Mr Bwalya was summoned by the Police after he and his colleague Mubita Nawa appeared on Muvi TV assignment programme and produced a stack of National Registration Cards which they claimed were irregularly issued.

And Mr Bwalya confirmed that he had been summoned by Police.

“The Zambia Police at Force Headquarters have reached out to us through a summon over the issue of alleged illegalities in the issuance of NRCs. We are glad the police have taken up this matter for further inquiry because all illegalities around the issuance of NRCs, regardless of who is behind it, represents an act of premeditated aggression against our constitution, the Zambian republic and the democracy we all cherish,” Mr Bwalya said.

“Above all, all illegalities around the issuance of NRCs create a toxic and irreparable platform of crime which can ultimately harm our society. We, as law abiding citizens, must stand firm and resist attempts by a small group of individuals to silence our voices by sabotaging our democracy through the improper issuance of NRCs,” he stated.

“We will cooperate with the police and do whatever they will ask of us in order to deliver justice for all of the Zambian people. But in addition to this step taken by the police, we will be calling for a full scale independent, multi – stakeholder commission of inquiry into how the mobile issuance of NRCs has been conducted.”

Mr Bwalya said this is not a political issue but a matter of collective national interest and people must all take a keen interest in it.

  1. It is really shameful the way we live now. Desperation has reached alarming proportions. Issuing NRCs has never been a problem in Zambia since independence. Now under PF, everything has a new twist to it. Yesterday in Linda compound in Lusaka, we saw cadres (driving brand new vehicles) harassing people queuing for NRCs. They asked people’s names and gave those with names they liked priority to jump to the front of the queue. I felt very angry. How long are we going to continue provoking people before something snaps??

  2. Kambwili nearly died In jail for forging his own identities on his companies. But I see no reason for not arresting a minister on a failed national IDs exercise. So many solid evidence in villages.
In rural areas is changing age of children. In cities is changing names to street kids, hence giving them multiple cards same face.
I prefer to offer citizenship to foreigners than change profile of children. I don’t care if Somalians and Ethiopians lineup to vote in Zambia.

  5. Chief Editor, get some education. A battalion consists of three and up five companies with 300 and up to 1,000 soldiers. With this sort of education you can alarm the citizens and kutisebanya internationally.

  7. Is putting on desert storm boots the in-thing? Is it now part of the uniform for our defence wings? I see a lot of cadres putting on these boots too.

  8. LT naimwe this wasn’t a battalion but a squad(section) or maybe a platoon. A battalion is somewhere between 300 and 1000 personnel in this case they would be under the Lusaka district command or even provincial.

With this kind of behaviour from Zambia Police, it’s going to be hard to report crimes related to NRC and voter issuance exercises, maybe it’s what the sympathisers for BOMA want – who knows?

  9. How does police call them fake when they also just saw them on TV? when did they verify the NRCs to prove that they are fake, because according to this report they went to search for the same documents, in short they have not yet seen them and verified them.

  11. I wish the youngman well, unfortunately he’s put his head on the chopping board by dangerously playing the role of a useful idyoti. The UPND is manufacturer of fake news, and unfortunately they believe their own propaganda. UPND is a dangerous organization, they’re not adding anything to the well-being of the nation. Only time will tell.

  12. Thank you to our men and women in uniform who risk their lives to protect our country and uphold the law. The upnd diasporans are very ignorant considering these baboons are in the so called free world. Forging of any official document especially one that is closely linked to elections is very serious crime. This hanthony guy went on live TV brandishing fake NRCS. The police can’t turn blind eye to criminalality. Let us be held accountable for our actions. Can the law deal with him.

  14. This institution is now a laughing stock. Colonial tactics still being applied sure. In this age , after the world has moved from stone age to iron age to computer age and now at digital age.

  15. Did this armed battalion, squad or policemen find the fake NRCs at UPND secretariat? or it was the usual fake armed bungling to the opposition premises.

    • @Tosh. When you are talking about a military or security unit you have to be specific coz some people will take it literally!!!!

  19. Zambians are not f 00 ls. They kicked out KK. They rejected Chiluba’s 3rd term. They made ara bee to cry. They rejoiced when the almighty Wynter Kabimba was sent into the winter of political ignominy. They are watching. They know how to flatter and polish someone’s ar se when they are in power. But when the voting starts, bye bye!

  20. No name, you forgot the introduction of the UPND’s manifesto I,e “Only a Tonga can be the president of UPND ” and then you should have continued with the 48 housed, social security cash, Luxury presidential jet, Mukula trees, ambulances, fire fighters etc. The above is the UPND’s manifesto. Now is this what Zambians are interested in? The answer is a big NO!! Zambians are interested in new roads, bridges hospitals, clinics, electrified thatched houses etc. You can also add setting up of a commission of inquiry into the privatisation

  21. These guys are up to something, and the opposition must wake up. They can even plant false evidence in the event of the so-called searching in the opposition offices. It is imperative that they secure their places with CCTV cameras to catch any of this so-called searching.
