Northern Province Permanent Secretary Bernard Mpundu, says government is committed to ensuring the livelihoods of youths are improved through the promotion of entrepreneurship, job creation and introduction of initiatives.
Mr Mpundu says youths should therefore take advantage of the opportunities the government has put in place to contribute to economic development.
He challenged the youths to rise and make a difference in society.
The media reports that Mr Mpundu was speaking when he graced this year’s Youth Day celebrations under the theme “Arise and soar”.
He said this year’s theme is a reminder for the youths to dream big and rise above their challenges in shaping a better Zambia.
“The theme promotes unity and leadership, inspiring peace, teamwork and leadership,” he said.
Mr Mpundu has since implored the youths to take a lead in the promotion of peace ahead of the 2026 general elections.
“Do not involve yourselves in violence and stay away from those who incite violence,” Mr Mpundu said.
And representing the youths, Sara Kangwa from Kasama College of Education, said youths are ready to be innovative and determined to contribute to development.
Ms Kangwa urged the youths to break barriers in order to rise and soar in line with this year’s theme.
She has, however, thanked the government for many initiatives for the youths countrywide.
Ms Kangwa thanked government for the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) bursaries, which have reduced the financial burden on families and helped youths to acquire skills.
“Investing in the youths is investing in the future of the nation,” she explained.
She, however, cited some challenges the youths are still grappling with, among them high unemployment levels and limited access to financial support to invest in businesses.
Meanwhile, Justine Bwalya, a youth from Newtown in Kasama, implored the youths in the country to stay disciplined and contribute to national development.
Mr Bwalya urged the youths to be focused on building a better Zambia.
