Police have arrested 259 additional suspects in connection with the killing of a woman in Kalumbila District, widening a high-pressure investigation that has now placed 276 people in custody over one of the most serious mob attacks recorded in recent months.
The arrests followed a coordinated overnight operation across Kisasa and surrounding areas, where officers moved in large numbers to identify and detain individuals believed to have taken part in the assault or contributed to the violence. The sweep, which began late Monday and extended into early Tuesday, was carried out by teams drawn from North-Western Province and reinforced by units from the Copperbelt.
The victim, Eneless Kamutumbe, 46, was attacked in a public setting while on a business trip after being accused of involvement in claims that circulated within the community. The allegations triggered a rapid escalation, drawing a crowd that turned violent within a short period and carried out a sustained assault.
Of the 259 suspects arrested in the latest operation, 163 are male and 96 female, with 50 identified as juveniles. Among those detained is a woman captured in widely shared video footage wearing a zebra-print dress, who was later tracked to Mwinilunga after leaving the area following the incident.
Police have begun a detailed screening process to establish individual roles in the attack, separating those directly involved from those present at the scene. Preliminary charges under consideration include murder, riotous behaviour, malicious damage to property and assault on police officers. Investigators are also examining whether there were individuals who incited or coordinated the attack, a line of inquiry that could extend the scope of the case beyond those physically present.
Medical findings have already challenged the central claim that triggered the violence. Examinations conducted on the individual whose condition had been linked to the allegations found no evidence supporting the accusation, undermining the narrative that drove the mob action. That development has shifted focus onto how quickly unverified claims can spread and lead to irreversible consequences.
Police officers who attempted to intervene during the attack sustained injuries after being confronted by the crowd, highlighting the volatility of the situation and the difficulty of restoring order once violence had escalated. The response from law enforcement since then has been structured around both immediate arrests and longer-term efforts to ensure accountability across all levels of involvement.
The scale of the operation reflects a broader concern within security agencies over incidents of mob justice, particularly those fuelled by misinformation and community panic. Authorities are working to establish a full timeline of events, identify those who initiated the violence and ensure that all participants are brought before the courts.
The presence of minors among those arrested introduces additional legal considerations, with the justice system expected to distinguish between levels of culpability while maintaining the integrity of the prosecution process. Investigators are relying on video evidence, witness statements and forensic findings to build cases that can withstand scrutiny in court.
The case has also brought renewed attention to the challenge of addressing vigilante actions in areas where rumours can spread rapidly and formal investigative processes are not immediately trusted. Law enforcement agencies are under pressure to demonstrate that criminal acts, regardless of the circumstances that trigger them, will be handled through established legal channels.
Authorities have indicated that operations will continue as the investigation expands, with further arrests expected in the coming days. The focus remains on ensuring that all individuals linked to the attack are identified and processed within the justice system.
The killing has become a defining test of the state’s response to collective violence, with the outcome likely to shape how similar incidents are handled in the future. The investigation continues to unfold across multiple locations, with officers maintaining a presence in affected areas as part of ongoing efforts to restore order and confidence.

That’s very intriguing, so all the people who have been arrested will be charged with murder?
Any fool would tell you there’s no way 250 people would have murdered one person. Overzealous policemen trying to show loyalty to commander HH. What a lapdog nation we’ve been turned into. Can’t anything work without the president?

What a lapdog nation we’ve been turned into!. Can’t anything work without the president?
259 of them. How was the murder committed? The judge should ask such questions
Remember that they were taking photos of themselves being there at the scene of crime. Its “uzakambila kusogolo” issue.
Amama neo! This police force! When their boss gives orders from Community House its ichi arreste arreste.
Until there’s another order they will continue arresting everyone they come across. Now there’s only one crime in Kalumbila until PF gets accused of a crime.

My deepest condolences to the family, especially to the child, and to our nation. This moment should define the leadership we seek: show compassion, seek the truth, and heal our communities.
Useless Police…this tells you that they don’t know what they’re doing….what type of law enforcement is that….we joke too much in Zambia…just because HH gave them orders now they’re arresting the entire Province
Do they even have enough resources to accommodate on these suspcts?…how are they going to feed them
PF Provincial chairman for Northwestern province was killed in exactly similar circumstances in cold blood during the 2021 elections in Solwezi. Killed using sticks and stones. Did justice catch up with perpetrators here?
Perhaps the president should do more say less in the future
This is crazy
Primitive way of law enforcement….chipante pante…they just need to arrest someone…..
Very primitive and dull people …..and they’re so dirty these Kisasa animals ..disgusting…worse than dogs
Bit below the belt
Just acting with overzeslousness after HH gave the order. Before that not even one person arrested.
