Fuel crisis forces Govt to suspend TAZAMA open access for six months

Government has suspended the TAZAMA Pipeline Open Access framework for six months in a move aimed at stabilising fuel supply amid a growing crisis.

Chief Government Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa said the suspension, running from April to September 2026, is intended to prevent fuel shortages and ensure consistent availability of petroleum products across the country.

The decision follows Cabinet’s declaration on March 31, 2026, that Zambia had entered an emergency fuel situation.

Mweetwa attributed the crisis to rising global oil prices and supply disruptions linked to escalating geopolitical tensions involving the Iran, United States and Israel.

He noted that the conflict has interfered with global oil shipments, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for international petroleum trade.

“The temporary suspension of the TAZAMA Open Access framework… will give Government leverage to respond to global geopolitical shocks while ensuring security of supply,” Mweetwa said.

Meanwhile, Cabinet has also approved plans to integrate the rehabilitation of the ageing pipeline into the proposed Tanzania-Zambia Multi-Product Petroleum Pipeline.

The project, a joint initiative between Zambia and Tanzania, is expected to strengthen long-term fuel supply and improve energy security in the country.
