Cinfeng Investment Limited Group of China has expressed interest to reopen Munali Nickel Mine in Chikanta District of Southern Province with over US$35 Million investment.
Cinfeng Investment Limited Group Chairperson, Hongzhi Guan, says his company is in discussions with Albdone Mine, the previous owners of Munali Nickel Mine, adding that his firm is ready to reopen the mine and offer workers another opportunity of employment.
ZANIS reports that Mr Guan was speaking in Choma when he called on Southern Province Minister, Credo Nanjuwa, at his office.
“We have visited the mine and we have toured the facility and we feel it is very possible for our company to participate in another investment which is Munali Nickel Mine,” Mr Guan said.
Mr Guan further stated that his company has prepared about 35 to 40 Million United States Dollars in terms of machinery and investment towards the reopening of the Mine.
He also disclosed that according to the condition of the mine and available resources from China, negotiations will continue with the owners of the mine.
“Once the negotiations with the owner are done and with support from Southern Province administration, we will come back and finalise as soon as possible to begin our operations,” he said.
And Southern Province Minister, Credo Nanjuwa, has assured the investor of the provincial administration’s support.
Mr Nanjuwa said the government desires to cooperate with the investor and would want transparency and adherence to the laws.
He has, however, urged the investor to prioritise the plight of former workers once the mine becomes operational.
“We want you to give priority to the former employees of the Mine because we are aware that over 400 workers lost their jobs when the mining company went into liquidation,” Mr Nanjuwa said.
