Sikumba’s decision comes shortly after former Livingstone mayor Constance Muleabai also withdrew from the race for the same seat.
In a public statement issued yesterday, Sikumba said he had decided to step aside from parliamentary elections in order to focus on campaigning for Hakainde Hichilema and UPND candidates across the country.
Reflecting on his tenure in Parliament, Sikumba described serving the people of Livingstone as one of the greatest honours of his political career.
“Five years ago, the people of Livingstone turned out in large numbers to entrust me with the honour of serving as their Member of Parliament; a privilege I will always hold close to my heart,” he said.
The former lawmaker stated that during his time in office, he worked closely with various government departments to advance development programmes and improve the welfare of residents in the tourist capital.
“Together, we achieved many milestones, while some initiatives remain works in progress,” Sikumba stated.
He thanked the people of Livingstone for the support and trust they had shown him throughout his tenure.
“I extend my sincere gratitude to everyone who supported me throughout this journey. Your trust, encouragement, and partnership have meant everything,” he said.
Sikumba further reaffirmed his support for President Hichilema and the ruling UPND ahead of the general elections.
“As I fully endorse the candidacy of the Republican President Mr Hakainde Hichilema, I wish to inform the public of my decision not to re-contest the position of Member of Parliament for Livingstone Central Constituency,” he said.
He added that he remains committed to supporting and campaigning for all adopted UPND candidates ahead of the polls.
