President Hakainde Hichilema has described as humbling a donation campaign by students, marketeers and small-scale miners on the Copperbelt who raised more than K100,000 in coins to support his presidential nomination ahead of the August 13 general elections.
The contribution was made last week during a march from Ndola Teaching Hospital Roundabout to the Copperbelt Provincial Administration offices, where supporters handed over the funds as a symbolic gesture of support.
The donors included students from Copperbelt University School of Medicine, Northern Technical College, Mukuba University, Kitwe Vocational Training Centre and ZIBSIP College, alongside marketeers and small-scale miners.
Speaking to supporters shortly after filing his nomination papers at Mulungushi International Conference Centre, President Hichilema said the money had been used to pay his nomination fee.
“I want at this point to thank the students on the Copperbelt, the small-scale miners on the Copperbelt, the marketeers on the Copperbelt, who raised a small amount of money and contributed over K100,000, which we have used to pay for the nomination today,” President Hichilema said.
The Head of State said he would personally visit the Copperbelt to express his appreciation to those who contributed to the fundraising effort.
“I will be coming to Copperbelt to have a meeting, to thank you for your contribution,” he added.
President Hichilema and Vice President Mutale Nalumango were yesterday validly nominated as presidential candidate and running mate respectively for the August 13 general elections.
Their successful nominations place them among 14 presidential candidates cleared to contest in this year’s election.
