An 11 year old boy has drowned in Mutotoshi Stream in Mukanga Village in Chief Mumporokoso’s Chiefdom, in Mporokoso District in Northern Province.
Northern Province Police Commanding Officer, Simunji Mulonda says the incident happened on June 23, 2026 between 11:00 and 12:50 hours.
Mr Mulonda has disclosed that the incidence was reported to Mporokoso Police Station at about 13:00 hours on June 23 ,2026 by Marjory Nsama, 54, of Mukanga village that her grandson Jonathan Chansa, a grade five pupil had drowned.
In a press statement made available to ZANIS today, Mr Mulonda disclosed that at approximately 10:30 hours the deceased left home with five friends, purportedly to attend classes which were scheduled to commence at 13:00 hours but instead of proceeding directly to school, the group allegedly decided to go swimming in Mutotoshi Stream, located about 300 meters from the school.
He said while swimming, Jonathan Chansa drowned after which his friends later reported the matter to school authorities, who informed Mporokoso Police Station.
He added that Police officers rushed to the scene and found the body had already been retrieved from the stream.
The Northern Province Commanding Officer revealed that physical inspection of the body was conducted and no visible injuries were observed.
He further added that the body was later taken to the mortuary, pending burial arrangements.
Mr Mulonda has since encouraged parents, guardians, teachers and community leaders to closely monitor children and educate them on the dangers of swimming in unsupervised water bodies, adding that collective efforts towards child safety can help prevent the occurrence of similar tragedies.
