Central Province SEEDCO Regional Manager, Simon Kalenga, has called on the government to curb the influx of fake seed varieties on the market.
Mr Kalenga told the media that the influx of fake agricultural input on the market could adversely affect the sector if not addressed.
He said SEEDCO is concerned about fake seed brands that have flooded the market to the detriment of genuine seed dealers.
“Government should move in and help in curbing fake seeds and fertiliser on the market. Fake seeds and fertiliser are a threat to national food security,” he said.
He said regulatory authorities have an obligation to confiscate all fake agricultural inputs to protect agro-companies.
Mr Kalenga said those engaging in such illegalities should face the wrath of law.
He added that sector players should be on high alert and ensure fake seeds are reported to the relevant authorities.
Mr Kalenga said the farming community needs to be protected from being swindled by fake seed and fertiliser dealers.
“The influx of fake seeds and fertiliser has made farmers vulnerable to abuse by those involved in the supply of fake agricultural inputs,” he said.
Mr Kalenga assured that SEEDCO remains committed to supplying quality seeds.
