Government has completed overhauling the water and sewerage works in the hostels at the University of Zambia.
All hostels now have clean and running water with all taps, showers and toilets working.
Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary, Maambo Haamaundu, says the hostels are now ready for occupation by students.
Mr Haamaundu notes that it is now up to the University of Zambia Senate to meet and decide when the tertiary institution can reopen.
The PS was speaking after he toured the hostels in the company of Zambia National Service Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff, Major General Reuben Mwewa, and University of Zambia Vice Chancellor Professor, Mundia Muya.
Mr Haamaundu said the men and women in uniform had delivered the works and what is remaining are just minor works outside of the hostels.
He thanked the multi-sectoral team of government departments including the Ministry of Infrastructure and Urban Development, Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation, the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit among others, for working hard to overhaul the water and sewerage system at the Great Road Campus.
Mr Haamaundu said apart from the works in the hostels, the Zambia National Service (ZNS) also repaired a damaged fire hydrant which is now pumping water to full capacity.
And Major General, Reuben Mwewa, said the service will continue with the remaining works so that the whole overhaul is completed.
He said the works at the University of Zambia were challenging but that the service was delivered on time.
Meanwhile, University of Zambia Vice Chancellor Professor Mundia Muya, thanked President Hakainde Hichilema for responding fast to the crisis at the University, noting that the challenges were real.
Prof Muya said the President’s quick response helped alleviate the suffering of the students.
He further said students will be notified when they will return to campus as the University Senate will meet and decide when the tertiary institution can reopen.
