WFP Chief arrives in Zambia this week

United Nations World Food Programme Executive Director Ertharin Cousin will make an official visit to Zambia this week, arriving in the capital, Lusaka, on Thursday and leaving on Sunday 17 January.

Ms. Cousin’s visit comes at a time when drought and the global El Niño weather event are having a severe impact on southern Africa, particularly on smallholder farmers who account for most of the region’s agricultural production. Zambia plays a key role in this regard, being one of the region’s foremost producers and exporters of maize and other crops.

During her stay, Ms. Cousin is set to meet President Edgar Lungu, Vice President Inonge Wina, representatives from key government ministries, and development and business community members.

While in Zambia, Ms. Cousin will discuss a number of new initiatives including WFP support for the national Home Grown School Feeding programme to which the Government is providing increased resources this year.

She will visit two WFP projects in Southern Province, one that provides insurance to help build the resilience of vulnerable smallholders at risk from drought and another involving global partners that promotes smallholder production, procurement and financing.

  1. Vision says now is the time to worry about the looming famine but PF says filaisova.

  2. It is not a good sign for WFP to be visiting Zambia. It just means that the government is unable to support the national Home Grown School Feeding programme on it’s own and needs the support of a humanitarian organization. This has nothing to do with the present climate conditions. The organization has been in the country for a while now.
